Be sure to check out Part 1 of this video: • Photography On Locatio...
Here we are, my friends, with part 2 of my video series from the Sonoran Desert. This day starts with some morning panoramic photography on my Shen-Hao TFC 617-A camera, exposing my favorite film of late (Kodak Portra) to that beautiful desert light.
I never get tired of using my 6x17 camera. Something about the wide panoramic format just tickles my fancy. And it seems to work especially well in the desert. Wide open spaces + a wide piece of film = a match made in heaven. That's right. Didn't think I'd get all maths on you, did you?
My 4x5 also came out from its slumber on this trip. It's been a little while since I've exposed some 4x5 film, but I believe this trip has rekindled my love affair with large format. I didn't take a ton of pictures on my 4x5 - just a couple frames on Ilford Delta 100. I'm looking forward to exposing much more than that in the near future.
Of course, I had to shoot some polaroids on this trip, too. Walking around with my Mint Camera SLR 670-S and snapping some instant photos is a good way to stay loose out there. If I only use my big slow view cameras all day, I might pull a hammy and get sidelined for the rest of the trip. I gotta rest my brain now and then, feed it some mental Gatorade. Polaroids are my mental Gatorade... Man, what the hell am I talking about? After some slow careful photography on my view camera, it can be nice to get quick and dirty with my polaroid camera. That's what I'm trying to say.
The light painting I'd done the night before was so fun that I just had to get out and do some more. So with my Canon EOS 6D mounted up and my 580EX II flash in hand (with colorful gels, of course), I sought out new specimens to bathe in light. I had a blasty-blast lighting up these saguaros in the starry night. As you'll see in the video, I was pretty dang pleased with myself about it. For someone like me who rarely does any night photography, it was easy to get blown away by the results.
Alright, that's it, folks. That's my trip to the Sonoran Desert to photograph saguaro cactus. Thanks for watching!

I just have to add my appreciation of these videos with their light attitude toward the process while covering a lot of technical territory. This may be gilding the lily as to B&W filters, but it is generally more reliable to adjust exposure for filter density by applying the exposure filter factor for the filter rather than measuring exposure through the filter itself. The reason is that light meters in varying degrees do not respond linearly to color, which can introduce exposure error if the meter is "off" for a given color. The best meters I know of for their color linearity are the Minolta Spotmeter models M and F. Unhappily for our author, one of the worst is his Pentax Digital Spotmeter. In the days of wet printing, such matters were more significant. Today, if you scan and inkjet print through Photoshop, the image has been stepped on so many times that it probably makes little difference.
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 6 жыл бұрын
Randall Stewart thank you very much! And that's very interesting about metering through the filter. I haven't had any such problems, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Assuming the meter does give an accurate reading through the filter (mine seems to), I really like that I can get a solid grasp on exactly which tones will be altered by how many stops. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to keep that in mind next time I'm using contrast filters.

This was a wildly productive trip! I love the variety of photos you were able to capture! On a side note, you might want to look into getting a radio controlled remote. You can put the camera in bulb mode, go to your first cactus to light paint, start your exposure, pop your flash, then go to your second cactus, pop the flash, then stop the exposure without having to run all the way back. :-)
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 6 жыл бұрын
Ben Horne oh damn that's a good idea. I have a pocket wizard that can trigger my camera but it wouldn't work like a locked shutter release in bulb mode I don't think. If my 6D had a "T" mode, it would work perfectly. Do you know of a radio trigger that would work better?
@DarkenedFin

I think the 6D also has wifi so you could use the Canon remote software on your phone.

Might also want to consider using something like ISO 100 or 200 for those night photos. That is 5 or 6 stops slower than the 6400 you started with, but it would afford a much longer exposure time; plenty long enough for light painting. Probably would have to dial up the strength on the flash though.
@nickcarverphoto
@nickcarverphoto 6 жыл бұрын
Peoria Videos Ltd the only problem with that is I would need my flash had to be way more powerful or I would have to do way more pops, which would put me back in the same predicament.

100% relate to the sunrise rush mentality. Now i always bring a little 35mm point and shoot so i can run around and snap away when i get that urge, and hold off on the good stuff until later. that way even if the photos are shit it doesn't matter because its just 35mm, and i don't get burned out on shooting before the light is more appropriate for the photos i really want.

ahhh...rb67...takes me back to the good ol days..i still have a couple of 4x5s that I can't seem to part with. I don't shoot them because in Arizona it is IMPOSSIBLE to get water below 85 degrees to do any film developing and there's no way I'm putting in a chiller and a water bath.
