Жыл бұрынIf you deal with videos or photos in any capacity, you’ve probably encountered various external SSDs like the Samsung T5s or T7s, Sandisk Extremes, or maybe just regular old hard disk drives. But what if I told you, you could get an external drive that’s customisable, and often much faster and cheaper? Today I compare HDDs vs SSDs v NVMe drives when it comes to the speeds you can get from these different drives. Using an NVMe enclosure will enable you to turn any NVMe drive into a portable external drive. I'll even show you the installation process (it's easy).

@@NickKendall Thank you for useful details! I purchased in October 2022 a new laptop, ThinkPad P16s and purchased separately and installed the newest Samsung 990 PRO, 2Tb which I am very happy with. The external storages I have are still SATA, HDD and old SSD, but I am thinking about faster add easier to carry external drive. Is SSD good to keep all files libraries (photos, documents etc) on or it is better to have them on HDD?

Yup, some comments also raised some good points about IOPS and cache, etc. I also have one external WD Black external but looking at the enclosure in this video and many out there, content creators won't get too far with it because the temperature goes over 50-60 degrees. This is why I have one with a heatsink enclosure provided with WD black. I also modified my own enclosure so it is more portable. Great for those who need it for 10-15 minutes, but not the heavy content creators who plan on using it with big data or over 1TB and longer duration 1-2 hours. You could get away with it for longer depending on usage but as expensive as 5TB are these days, not worth the risk on the sacrifice with durability or resillence. Nevertheless, great for a compact, portable approach and even more sturdy than carrying around a hard drive or bigger dimension formats like ssd. On production, SSD has been the way to go and even utilising the cloud streaming storage. instead not the cheapest nor faster approach but versatile.

Acasis has new SSD enclosure which has small inbuilt fan and helps to dissipate the heat faster and keep the drive cooler.

I would just like to point out that there is still one big parameter to take into account: the speed your I/O can manage. Because having a faster external disk on I/O that cannot handle much than the previous one would be useless. Cheers

I am about to pick my DIY ssd build, but I am looking for a greatly durable built with 4TB of storage space and charge trap technology. What would you recommend? The storage and the charge trap tech or a must within my setup atm

I have some decent enclosures for my NVME drives. None are 40gbps but those enclosures are for those with usb4. If you don't have usb4 it is pointless to spend the extra money for the faster external drives. Im glad there are now 4t drives available that run decent speeds. Now to get an enclosure that will handle 4 of them at once for my desktop external drive. I have decided to keep my external drives for photo/video only. Saves space on my internal drive.

There are USB4 and Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosures that can reach up to 40Gbps. Any laptop with a TB3 port will work with it. Those enclosures are super expensive though because they they have TB controller on their board. if you stick a Gen4 NVME drive in there it will run extremely fast.

Some factors that determines speed from enclosures. Sata speeds are slower than Pcie. Also the enclosure. USB4/Thunderbolt 40Gbps, USB3.2 Gen 2x2 20gbps, USB3.2 gen 2 10Gbps . That will be the theoretical maximum speed no matter what NVME you put into the enclosure. For 10gb enclosures, just put cheaper ssds at more than half the price of a high end card. ssds with dram performance better for sustained loads. If the ssd is 7000 MBps, you can only get that speed mounted in a motherboard with direct access to full bandwidth. Wired standards are the bottleneck.

i just bought a 2TB 2230 M.2 drive and really small enclosure for it. It cost me about $170USD total. With the included rubber sleeve installed the size comes out to 50mm x 48mm x 16mm. It included a short usb-c to usb-c cable but I bought a 32mm long male usb-c to male usb-c adaptor so i can use it just like a flashdrive.

And then there’s Gibibits and Gibibytes! (And kibibytes, mibibytes, etc). The ‘ibi’ means that instead of each level going up by powers of 10, it goes up by powers of 2. So a megabyte is 1000 kilobytes or 1000^2 bytes. A mibibyte is 1024 kibibytes, or 1024^2 bytes. So just remember that KiB, MiB, GiB are larger (but not by an order of magnitude) than KB, MB, and GB.

40gbps nvme enclosures are super fast but they usually have fans and become like tiny jet engines when you're accessing the drive a lot.

bits, Bytes; cents, Dollars; little, Big; little b, Big B; little bit or Big Bite. x10 rule for sake of ease. -ISP speeds look faster using more numbers, so they mess up the consistent Byte measurement, using bits likes 200 Mbps (mega bits per second, ~20 MBps (mega Bytes per second)). -Size is usually Bytes rather than bits, but ISPs like to looks 'faster'. -Keep it easy, just use bits and x10 if you see Bytes. -Yes, technically 8 bits = 1 Byte (4 bits is a nibble).

I currently store my file libraries on an external HDD. I am interested in transitioning to an external NVMe drive. However, one issue with SSDs is that when copying a large amount of files to another drive, initially, the speed is high, but it later decreases significantly, falling below that of an HDD, which maintains a consistent speed. Have you had a similar experience? Can you transfer all files from one SSD to another with the same high-speed performance throughout the process? By the way, I have the same SSD on my laptop :)

Well, it depends on the SSD you chose, before buying you need to check for its SLC caching. For example, WD SN570 which has SLC caching 13GB which means, you'll get consistent speed of around 3500MB/s (As per the Read/write speed) till the 13GB then after it'll decreases to around SATA speed, which is usually around 450MB/s. If there is another SSD for example Samsung 970 Evo Plus, then you'll get consistent speed till 115 GB then it'll decrease to SATA speed. Every SSDs has their own SLC caching. before buying always look for SLC caching if your priority is to transfer heavy files every now and then.

@b.c.2177 Yes, but not totally it's only a single factor among many that gives an edge to become better. Overall, SSDs are chosen according to the needs. For example, if you're a content creator, then you'll need more SLC caching as you'll transfer more and large files more frequently than normal users. If you're gamer, then you'll go for better performance where you'll look for Random Read/Write speed. Also, some other factors we look for are having DRAM, TLC NAND Flash memory. These all things together make SSD better. One more thing to note is that usually, the brand does market with Sequential Read/Write speed, which is written on their boxes ,like 3500/3200 Mbps, 4050/3900 Mbps, etc, these helps when transferring data it's the speed we get initially until SLC caching gets full. But for performance, we look for random read/write speed. Which is written as 450,000 IOPS/560,000 IOPS or 450K IOPS/560K IOPS, etc.

70 to 80 MB per second is slow for an HD.. thats because thats a 2.5 inch hdd and I would avoid those. Also you should NOT use those tiny enclosures for editing even with the thermal pad. It gets hot it will fail. These are great for transfering data. They are not for all day edit use. You need a unit with cooling or at least much much better airflow.

Thanks for sharing your thought! :) Interestingly I've found the opposite, when I'm editing from the drive it stays pretty cool. It's when I transfer large amounts of data to or from the drive is when it gets really hot.

@@NickKendall Thats not the point. For short burst of high activity that is fine and that is what these drives are made for. All day working while maybe NOT AS hot wears it down after a while. There is a reason that nobody who works on shows or films or any other critical production method works off drives like this.

Did some testing & found out that some SSD draw more power than others ... so if you are the kind of person that wants to use SSDs to transfer files from & to Mobile Gear like phones or Tablets/iPads (iOS or Android) or even Prof. Cameras, you may want to avoid the Samsong Pro lineup and go for SSDs that use less power like the Corsair MP600 Core XT or similer (not the MP 600 PRO ... the Core XT)...

NVME drives for use as external drives need also enough IOPS and cache. If not as far as the cache will be full, the transfer rates will drop down to classic Hard Drive speeds. It depends of how much data you plan to move. Expensive drives like the Samsung and WD Black are mostly good, but this is a issue with cheaper ones.

The Uni is a terrible design, don't think it could get any cheaper than that. It slides in the enclosure and I highly doubt that that thermal tape makes proper contact to the case.

@@albyxi have a similiar designed ssd enclosure and i can vouch these enclosures with slide-in case on most cases like mine (and probably this one too) the thermal pad wont make a proper contact with the outer case, and in my case it would get hot really fast with the case closed

@@albyxBasic physics seeing as how it slides in with no resistance. That means the case isnt touching. A better design are the ones that close on top and you can literally feel it pushing on the thermal silicone tape

Very likely you'll be limited by the USB port itself and how much it can transfer at once.

Have does the thermal pad make contact with the ssd and the enclosure if you can just slide the top on and off ? You forget to clarify the NVMI vs SATA (they boat are m.2 and can be confusing) and there is no reason to by the fastest gen4 NVMI if you are trying to push the data true a USB2 port. This is not a technical review I would suggest to recommend other more technical reviews from other youtubers as well. It's fine to upload your experience, but maybe others will buy what you suggest and they will get worst speeds than a Samsung t5.

As far as I know NVME drives aren't considered as reliable long term so I'm not sure it'd be the best for backing up valuable data.

I'm looking to replace my 2tb ORICO M.2 Enclosure build with a Samsung 980 Pro nvme with a 4tb option. The nvme best priced are the crucial P3 and WD BLACK SN850X 4TB housed in a thunderbolt enclosure, that's supports that size. My shortlist is a newer orico enclosure or one by ocasis or yottomaster. Still researching what to buy as cost is approaching £500

i have just bought the crutial p3 plus 4tb and put it in the asus tuff gaming A1 enclosure thats only rated to 2tb drives but plenty people have but the 4tb in it and it works perfect plus its the only enclosure i found to be ip68 rated whole setup only cost me £187

Nvme enclosures slow down on large transfers and when dealing with non sequential writes. I.e. lots of small files. 40gbs is the way to go. Don’t bother with the 10gbs enclosures. In my opinion.

Has anyone ever made a RAID 0 drive with 2 or 4 SSD modules? If so, did it get speeds closer to the 40 Gbps that Thunderbolt 4 promises?

Yes, for example Sabrent has its own enclosure for 2 x M.2 and they can be set in raid as well. The thing I don't like about it is, it comes with its own power brick that is almost bigger than the enclosure itself. Plus the cables. So it kinda defeats the portability.

Great video, unfortunately not ‚true‘ anymore! I have several SanDisk extreme external ssd‘s (1x 1TB, 2x2TB, 1x 4TB) and they give around the same read / write speed- but, and here’s the clue now - significantly cheaper. The 4TB version costs ~235€ (good deal!) vs. Samsung nvme ssd 4TB ~329€ + enclosure ~35€ (~364€) for that you‘ll get a 4TB + a 2TB SanDisk Extreme SSD! Now speed difference you might think. There is none. You can get a better enclosure that actually supports faster transfer rates though, which will boost the speed up to 2-2.500 MB/s - but again, ~329€ (4TB Samsung nvme) + enclosure (that supports the speed! ~150€) = 479€ The SanDisk Extreme Pro (4TB, 2000MB/s Version goes for ~320€)

I have the same set up and when plugged in, it does not show up on the computer. Light turns on and it’s operational but it simply does not show the drive.

Jup, better buy a Portable SSD. They tend not to overheat that much. Nvme's get really hot in a enclosure like that and anre not designed for frequent use like that

That is not the limitation of the drive or the enclosure. USB is the limiting factor, if you get a Thunderbolt enclosure, your bandwidth goes up to 40 gigabits. 10 gigabit is the bandwidth of USB 3 Gen 2 and USB 3 Gen 1 is limited to 5 gigabits a second. Also, not all prebuilt external SSDs are just a hiked-up price. Some offer IP rating, drop resistance rating and even thunderbolt certification which adds cost. Are they reasonable and fair? that is more of a subjective question and my personal answer is a no but then again I do not make a living out of it. also 1 byte = 8 bits.

$100/GB (without price of enclosure) doesn't seem cheaper to me, compared to, for instance, the .Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 for $96.. But I'm just another broke dummy, what am I missing?

ok so its very aparent you have not head of thunderbolt drives as these are far faster externale setups then any 3.2 usb c drive is so yes your wasting your money on all the nvme drives your putting into 3.2 usb cases and your a mac user and should know this stuff already so why are you wasting your money on junk slow drives when you can have the power of thunderbolt drives that you can also build your self and hit speeds of 2700+ MB/s also 40 MB/s drives cost as little as 120.00 cnd dollars for the case and the ideal drive to put in it is express 4.0 7kx6k NVMe which gets you to the 2700+ i have tested 3500x3000 nvme drives express 4 and they run to slow in the thunder bolt case so the 7000x6000 is what you need to get 2700+ x 2700+ speeds , again if you tested this your self you would know this and also you would not be using 3.2 drive cases with nvme at all and there are the side affects to 3.2 that your for saure not aware of either but youll learn in time iam sure..

Both the Samsung Ts and Sandisk extremes are made of nvme drives themselves 😂 a tiny bit of change is physical dimensions, this is super amateurish to recommend something jus becoz it is cheap sir Samsung drives like the 900 series peak up to 4gbps r/w(last I checked) and there is no external enclosure in the market to support those speeds. My extreme pros on paper support 2gbps(dual channel usb-c) which most laptops don’t support resulting in a 1gbps max speed

Yeah, make sure you check large data transfers, before you claim anything. I used to be a big Crucial fan, but the P5 plus sticks that I have just overheat like crazy, unless I run them in at least something like an Asus TUF enclosure. And that should be ridiculously overkill, since it's 146 g of metal heat sink. That's more heatsink than anything Crucial sells. So yeah, don't try to use these for backups. Try transferring like 700 gb, and see what happens. Most likely, it's going to get so hot, it's either going to dismount, or just fail. I don't know about the Samsung sticks, but that's common with all of them.
