That is so so true. I hit vintage clubs quite frequently and while I can hit the longer irons decent, I can't hit the shorter clubs.

Jack, the greatest, tee to green and game management who can compare. Seve, the greatest match play golfer ever and his range of shots was sometimes astonishing. These days the game seems so dry, so mechanical, so money driven. Very few great characters left.

Much more entertaining to watch and play. Watching the modern game is like wathcing baseball if they let the players hit with a metal bat 3 times the size of the wooden one. Playing it is like ten pin bowling with bumper lanes. I always play old clubs.

I watched Jack play a round of golf at the Australian Golf Club in 1996, he was 58 years of age then and well past his prime, he was also rather out of shape to be fair. His swing was short and you could tell it was a real physical effort to make a decent swing. Despite this jack shot a 1 under round of 71 and to watch him manage his way around that course was an absolute delight, no wonder he won so many Majors, he truely is the very best ever.

Except Jack was born in January 1940, so he was actually 56 in 1996. Jack, as we know, had growing hip problems. They caused him a lot of pain. I saw him only a few years from that time when he had arrived to play a pro am with his son and Johnny Miller, and he wasn't sure he would play because of the pain. But he had a great career.

"Light-hearted"? LOL.Seve had a laugh but was trying like hell to win,his swing is poetry in motion and when the Ping worked as in '88 he was unstoppable. The mighty Nicklaus showed his quality even though he was obviously unfamiliar with the course. "Out of bounds?" Proper golf played by two greats,should be compulsory viewing for those who think Tiger Woods invented golf. Thank you,mil gracias,muy agradecido.

Many of us got to know about him once he was gone. These videos are huge inspiration to me. Strangely enough, Channel 4 did broadcast some US golf in the early 80s (I think they showed the Masters from '83 to '86). They may have broadcast ABCs coverage of the '83 Ryder Cup, so they could be a possible port of call.

It's hard at the age of 46 to compete with someone Seve's age and talent. Even so, Jack came within a whisker of tying the great Spaniard. Twice Nicklaus pulled his tee shot, the second time on the 17th hole, where it cost him a stroke. Arliss commented on the first pull that Jack's legs stopped working through the ball and the upper body took over. I wouldn't have noticed that, but upon replay, yes, I guess that's right. Even an all-time great still can have bad habits creeping into their swing. Golf is such a precise, demanding game. And the difference between winning and losing can be as little as moisture on a green.

Both absolute Legends with poor technique, after the great swings of Hogan and then Peter Thompson in the 40s 50s and 60s came the 70s and 80s swings, Apart fromTom Weiskopf and a few others none of us had a clue and didn't study Hogan enough including all our coaches, the lack of video didn't help though. The swings over the last 20 years have gone back to the Hogan style and with modern technology the top pro's make the game look a lot easier. Seve was a genius and an honour to have partnered with him 4 times in the Ryder Cup. RIP Seve.

Seve was relentlessly competitive, and often in a cruel or unsporting way. His mind games were legendary. But he did not dare mess with Jack. Good match.
@MrAJR76
@MrAJR76 4 жыл бұрын
Why would he have wanted to mess with Jack? He & Nicklaus were good friends (to the end), and this was not a serious match. Seve was always totally immersed in his own game, and simply played like his partners didn't exist. Langer once said he was 'intimidating' for that reason, and that "you practically had to hole it from 200 yards for him to say 'good shot' ". The coughing was just a nervous cough which he did all the time, even if nobody was within a hundred yards of him (saw it myself on many occasions). Now, if you're looking for gamesmanship look at gnarly players like Floyd and Wadkins. They pulled some serious stunts on their opponents. Great golfers, but very unpleasant guys.

@Spence Kissack: Sure, it was (by all accounts) a big cut shot from under the lip - I've read & heard so many accounts of it over the years, and seen the stills by Phil Sheldon. But I have no idea where you could have seen it, as the BBC didn't cover that Ryder Cup in any shape or form. I do recall commentary between Dave Marr & Peter Alliss late on the Saturday of the '87 match (the first US one the BBC had ever covered, broadcasting the ABC footage & using their commentary). Seve was playing a fairway bunker shot at 17, and Marr said: "Peter, he hit the greatest shot I've ever seen in '83, with that wood out of the bunker onto the green", with which Alliss agreed. This indicates (but doesn't prove) that ABC did catch it, & that it may still exist in their vaults. But again, given the worldwide demand to see it, it's not encouraging that they've never managed to unearth it - you'd imagine they've been searching as hard as anyone. ABC really would be the only company thhatt night have it.

We were all awestruck with Seve's effortless swing in the 80's. He made it look so easy. He looks so comfortable. Nicklaus always looked like he was trying and concentrating so hard, as if his life depended on it. He made golf look difficult. Just look at the agonizing way Nicklaus crouches over the ball with his putter in the most uncomfortable posture I've ever seen.

I'm actually reading Nicklaus' book "Golf My Way" right now. Excellent book. Nicklaus was able to articulate most of the concepts of the modern golf swing and share his ideas and "feels." Not sure if Seve ever distilled and shared his ideas about the swing in a book. Maybe he didn't understand or think about it in the way that a more cerebral, analytical man like Nicklaus. I doubt that Nicklaus derived the same kind of pleasure from playing golf professionally as Ballesteros did. Swashbuckling Seve looked like he was having more fun. While Nicklaus was all business. Get it done and then fly back home to West Palm Beach and play tennis, spend time with family or design golf courses. And put some ice on that neck from stooping over putts.

It's a penalty for both the person asking for advice and for the person giving advice, advice being, "any counsel or suggestion which could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club, or the method of making a stroke." Although Jack was being a little cheeky here and technically asked what brand of clubs Seve was playing these days, not necessarily which club. He later said quite clearly, 'Well, if Seve was hitting a 5 I need at least a 3.' A bit of a joke I think.

Unfortunately hitting straight drives is kind of important in golf. That's like saying if Ken Griffey Jr. would've hit the ball higher and farther he'd be the all-time home run leader. Don't get me wrong I loved watching Seve play but Jack is the best there was or will be.

Ken who? Hitting straight drives isn't important the top pro's shape their shots to fit the hole, fades draws etc.Regarding Jack I beg to differ, although I am biased being British. I think Seve for those few years when he was no 1 in the world was the greatest. Tiger and Jack are close seconds.
@smbake

I guess I misinterpreted straight for meaning accurate. Since you're British I'm guessing you don't follow baseball....Ken Griffey Jr. hit a lot of home runs but not the most. You're correct, for a short time Seve was the greatest but over a career there's little doubt the greatest ever is Jack. By the way if you haven't seen it check out Seve The Movie. Very well done. lol at Jack at the beginning. No, Dublin (OH) was not the first capital of Ohio nor was it ever a capital.

@@stevedriscoll2539 I think he was being serious too. Just made me laugh. Not sure where he heard that from - the idea that Dublin was the first capital of Ohio.

Why is it that Jack faced other legends one after the other. Why is it that Tiger's major victories came against nobodies who never won a major. Young Jack today. Where is DeChambeau? I want to outdrive him with this new equipment. Young Tiger in the Nicklaus era. G damn it these clubs are too hard to hit.

Right on, today's clubs (especially the drivers) are ok for women and children and the very elderly, but not for grown men under say the age of 60 or so.

46 years old...loft and shaft length of a modern 5-6 iron...and balls 20-30 yards shorter than modern balls!?! Do you know anything about golf???

@@Master...deBater You're so kind with your soft-spoken words. 1986 was not that long ago in my life, junior. I recall hitting my 4 iron 190 yards in 1986, and I'm not a championship golfer.

@@batswbennett I'm calling BS on that claim!!! And certainly at 46 years old you couldn't! But even if it were true...there are plenty of hacks who can hit a modern 4 iron 200+ yards...but can't break par! I personally know a guy who hits his driver 320yds...but can't even break 80 lol. What does any of that prove? Nothing except that you clearly know nothing about golf!!!

@@Master...deBaterWe're talking about the greatest golfer in history at age 46 hitting a 4 iron I80 yards. We're not talking about scoring. You're not very good at this. I do have more knowledge of golf and life in general than you do in your puny millennial manhood. You apparently know your own ego, Gomer. Now, go away, boy.
