“Heart of the Sunrise” should be your next Yes song. It will blow you away. Also, Chris Squire put out a solo album in 1975 called “Fish Out of Water.” You must dive into it at some point.

The band "Cairo" does an EXCELLENT version of it too, and "Stanley Snail" with "Siberian Khatru", made up of Kevin Gilbert (Keys, Low Vocals), Mike Keneally (Guitars, Mid Vocals), Nick D'Virgilio (Drums, High Vocals) and Bryan Beller (bass).

For us in the older generation such as the time of this tune were lucky enough to have parents pass on their music to us which helped us understand and appreciate a wider range of music. And we are also lucky to appreciate current attempts of music. Why my generation didn't pass that along is beyond me

I read somewhere the band was surprised the engineer’s edit included Steve Howe doing his initial sound check (before 3:05) on his guitar. They kept it, thankfully.

Yep. When I first heard And You And I on CD, I was delighted to hear a tinny voice say ‘we’re recording now’ just before Steve Howe says ‘okay’ after the first note. Suddenly it was clear he was replying to the engineer, probably Eddie Offord, and not just randomly talking over his own playing 🤣

When I saw them at Madison Square Garden in NYC in the 70’s on a rotating round stage they played this and only green lights flooded them, like the album cover. It was amazing. Chris Squire’s bass is fantastic. Dream on you 2…..to the Heart ❤️ of the Sunrise. I so enjoy watching your reactions! You appreciate their musicianship! 👍😁

I'd never be able to choose among these great bands to say one is definitively better. Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Supertramp, ELP, King Crimson, are all at the top! I do enjoy Steely Dan but would not put them in the same category of music...I consider them more Pop and less Prog. Then there is The Who and Led Zeppelin who are equal to these bands in greatness but more strictly in the Rock genre. The one thing most of us agree on is that the 70s...especially the 1st half...produced some of the greatest bands and music ever!

Pop? Where is there pop like Steely Dan? What the hell is "Take the Long Way Home", "Give A Little Bit" "Goodbye Stranger", "Dreamer", "Sister Moonshine", "Even In the Quietest Moments"? That's extremely pop stuff. Not to mention all the generic pop/rock stuff Genesis and Yes did after the 70's.

💖💖💖💖 I fell in love with Yes with Roundabout in 1971, but Close to the Edge and this song in particular made me a lifelong fan in 1972. I warms my heart to know that current generations and future ones as well will appreciate the talent and genius that is Yes. Thanks for helping to spread the word. 💖💖💖💖

The only better way to hear this than on headphones is via a surround sound system...there are definite spine tingling moments in this song. Glad you've enjoyed it.

Back in the 1970's we seldom used headphones to listen to music. We used real amplifiers with real floor standing speakers. When the bass notes played we felt it in our chest and it was moving.

When i was in my late teens, I was too poor to afford headphones, I so I used to put my cheap little stereo speakers on the floor, lie on my back with my head lie between them. I'd close my eyes and this piece of music in particular would send me off on a space adventure, visiting other worlds.

I have in my 65 years seen lots of masters of the air guitar, but Nick is in a category that doesn’t number many, and that’s a master of every Air instrument. It makes me smile widely to watch him lay each instrument as they come in;) I have to be in my car to play the air keyboards. If I haven’t got the dashboard to pound on it’s just not the same;) The born in the wrong time time thing, I feel like that about the swing and big bands ear, 1920’s into the 1950’s. I never had the patients or discipline to learn an instrument other than my vocal chords. It killed me when a stroke struck the left side of my face, and brain;( You’d never know to spend a day doing anything that I had a stroke. Unless you knew me before my Sinatra quality baritone was stolen from me;(;(

I've seen yes 34 x spanning 40 years one of the many highlights was February 1974 it was early in that tour so they performed the entire close to the edge album and the entire Tales From topographic oceans album and roundabout in quadraphonic. It changed my life

YES! I know where you guys are coming from. Both of my parents were musically inclined. My dad loved classical music. He played wind instruments like the flute, oboe, and recorders. He also hand built a harpsichord from a kit he bought. My mom played piano and sang. She was talented enough to sing with Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra choir for a couple of years when I was growing up. When I heard the band YES and all of their instruments and their style, I fell in love with them. I am so happy you both appreciate their music and talent. Keep up the reviews...love your channel!

A wise man once that that comparison is the thief of joy, so it is probably best to accept that they are all brilliant in their own way. But it is useful to know what they think about the matter. Jon Anderson tells about he and a bandmate went to see King Crimson perform "In the Court..." album in London. Afterwards, he turned and said: "We are going to have to practice more." He later said the same thing after seeing Mahavishnu Orchestra. Jon sang "Prince Rupert Awakes" on King Crimson's Lizard, which may be among his most beautiful songs. Top 5 for sure. On that same shelf though are Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Strawbs, Genesis, Renaissance, Gryphon, Zappa, Mahavishnu...all of whom are classically trained musicians as well as creative visionary geniuses. They spawned many other good and great bands, but they were the pioneers, and surely love and respect one another. They all tell of going to see Pink Flyod, slack-jawed, at the Underground in London. My personal favorite flower child song is "The Rain, the Park & Other Things" (I love the flower girl) by the Cowsills. Very groovy. Beautiful reaction guys, I remember a friend introducing me to Yes in 1975 with this song, the experience was so profound, it was love at first listen, I'll never forget it. One song to go "Siberian Khatru" to complete this masterpiece of an album. Yes is a wonderous lifelong journey and you've only just begun, happy travelling! Cheers

My 2 favorite bands growing up was YES and Rush. As I watch you two listening to the first times it always sends a shiver up my spine as I remember being a young teenager and the countless hours alone in my room listening to Yes, memorizing every word, every sound. Yes we’re my favourite band in the 70’s but after Going for the One the classic era was over for me. I first saw them in Birmingham UK on the TFTO when I was 13 still the best gig I have been to. I loved Rush seeing them on the Farewell to Kings and twice on the Hemispheres tour they were incredible.

I can remember, quite vividly, this song playing over a retail department store's sound system when it was brand new. Rick Wakeman's opening statement played on MiniMoog (4:00 on your video) made me walk immediately to the store's record section where I bought the album. This song has made such an impact on my life over the years that I included the lyrics from "Apocalypse"---the final 4 lines of the lyrics of the tune---into my wedding vows to my wife. And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning And you and I reach over the sun for the river And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement And you and I called over valleys of endless seas With her by my side, we have had the pleasure of meeting Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe over the years. The version on 'Yessongs' is simply astounding. Glad that you are enjoying your musical journey 🙂

Yes to me means so, so much. Towards the end of his life, my Great Uncle spent a lot of time in the local VA Hospital (He was a WWII Veteran). My parents and I would go three-four times a week to visit him, picking up dinner on the way so he wouldn’t have to always have the crummy hospital food. For whatever reason, we were all on a “Yes Kick” around that time, and we had the Classic Yes CD in the car on repeat. Anytime I think of those times, those songs, especially this one, always come to mind, and I always think of my Great Uncle. We couldn’t take the CD up to his room, but we didn’t mind, cause we always had “Cash Cab” on while we ate with him. 😂 Btw, I never thanked you guys, ya’ll took my Chester and Lester request first!!! I am honored!!! 😆 I hope ya’ll delve more into that album, and the two of them as artists as whole. So much good material, so much to offer, from both of them. Ya’ll might get a few more requests from me down the road here, we’ll see what happens……😉 🤟

I know it's been a while, but I always have to mention how critically important Yes has been in my life. Thirty years ago, when I had cancer and was going through chemotherapy, I didn't have the energy to do anything, and I mean anything, like even reading or watching TV tired me out. Yes, that bad, so what did I do? I put my headphones on, lay on the carpet (even getting up on the couch was too much for me), and listened to Yes, among other bands. If not for them, I don't know what I would have done. Thirty years later, I'm still alive. God bless Yes and their uplifting, spiritual nature. God bless.

...Nick - you really nailed it in your musings about who's done it best... I often have to think of nature in that context... is a banana better than an orange; a rose better than a daisy - the sea better than the mountains... of course not - they're just different, unique, and make my heart overflow with joy and gratitude in the moment... and there is a bunch of 70s 'ProgRock' bands that has that outstanding skill, dedication and brilliance... thats why our favourite-bands list can always change... its rather a reflection of our own ever-changing moods - an objective ranking is impossible... its just a fun game to do... 💖

"And You And I" is some of Yes's most beautiful music. Parts one and three are very pastoral with the acoustic guitar supporting Anderson's soaring vocals that transitions to parts two and four 's very dramatic and ethereal feel. The way they introduce new sounds and ramp up from the folky sections is just genius. There's not a wasted or extraneous note to be heard.

I was fortunate enough to see Yes on the Fragile and Edge tours. The Edge concert was on election night 1972, The Yessongs album is pretty much the Edge concert. The lights went out, the crowd roars awaiting the band, and it remains dark with no band for what seems an eternity, (being high) when you hear orchestra music softly playing building to a deafening crescendo, a spotlight shines down on Rick Wakeman at the keyboards all dressed in black with a black cape so all you can see is his head and long blonde hair seemingly floating above the stage ....was very cool at 18 years old. After they finished Siberian Khatru, Jon stepped to the mic and said "If you haven't heard King Richard (Nixon) has won his second term" ....never heard boos like that ever.....

It is obvious that you two have much more musically rich lives than the contemporaries that you were discussing. I think there must have been people my age who were introduced to this great music when they were young, but were not affected by it the same way I was. I am so glad that I am able to appreciate and be moved by this music, and it is thanks to you two along with other reactors that I find even more about it to appreciate. Keep up the good work.

Your minds will be blown when you see and hear how Yes played this live at that time, as featured on Yessongs. Must add that the Yessongs album audio mix is much better than on the film, and the live version chosen for the album is actually better than what is heard on the film. Seek the album audio out first, then watch the film.

The two of you are Amazing. I really enjoy watching your Reactions to music that I Should have heard when those songs were air-played. At the time, I was busy working a job to help raise a family. It was sometimes Years later before I was able to hear some of this Great music. I do like YES, and especially Steely Dan and Alan Parsons. Please keep up the Great reviews, and Thanks.

Was listening to your discussion in the middle there and at the end, I wouldn't worry about younger generation's music because this music will eventually hit most of them too. Look how long humanity's been grooving on Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Miller, Berry, Beatles, Stones etc., among a few. Keep the flame alive, expose them to it and most will come around in time. I didn't care for classical at all as a kid as my dad played it all the time on piano when not listening to it on the radio ALL the time. I was a rocker at 9 after the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's Show in 1964, and ever after steered clear of that old fashion, ancient classical. It wasn't until 1968 when dad took me to see "2001: A Space Odyssey" that I because a classical music fan! LOL! I became immersed in it, but rock is still my favorite. It was no surprise when rock and classical instruments merged well as with the Beatles, and others later. And Nick, I feel your frustration as to which of the 60s to 80s bands are your favorite(s). Been trying to do that for decades now and it's best to stop because it's all good! It's a rotational thing, like t-shirts. No matter which band's music I could take to that proverbial "desert island", I would miss the others after a while. You mentioned early Pink Floyd, you guys should do their pre-Dark Side albums, either chronologically or reverse order. But be prepared for a very different sounding PF than you're used to, especially with Piper, Saucerful and Ummagumma as it was their acid/psychedelic early period particularly the first two albums. Here's the reverse order from Dark Side: Obscured by Clouds (1972) Meddle (1971) Atom Heart Mother (1970) Ummagumma (1969) A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) 😎👍

I am 65 and DID live during this time. But my dad, born 1922, was huge into Artie Shaw and Big Band. Because he was my father I was open to othere genres. Boogie woogie piano. JJ Johnson. Those Guys would play in the clubs and then go back to their homes and jam all night and party. Give it a listen. Always felt those guys should be have a movie made about them. Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, JJ Johnson.

It's so refreshing knowing there are older, musical souls, of your generation. Younger people who truly appreciate melodic, progressive music. Just my two bits, Nick, from an older music/guitar head...I've seen all those guitarists you've mentioned in this video, live, in concert...Holdsworth, Malmsteen, Vai, Lifeson...but in terms of multi-virtuosity in diverse genres & command of styles, Steve Howe towers above those particular guitarists. Eric Johnson, is the next generational wonder, in my opinion...Steve Morse, is yet, another one.

Indeed. For the Yes “America”, do a KZfaq search and you shall see them in NY on a Fox tv show before and on the same day as the Yankees were being celebrated for a World Series win. BTW, this was the first that Yes got back together since the 80’s. You’ll love it

I am so glad you finally saw Genesis live, I can't wait to see it! I commented when you listened to Suppers Ready that hearing old Genesis was only HALF the experience. And as I have said before, if the band Musical Box comes near you it's a MUST see, they recreate those Genesis shows with all the costumes and exact stage show.

@@tonys2899 but, unless you know different, they aren't doing the exact Staging for it. In 2017 or so, their Concert was in Three Parts. Lamb songs were " reimagined". Fly on a Windshield floored me. I did get the chance to see them do Lamb in Chicago in 2011. That was Epic. In any form, they are more practiced to Genesis than was Genesis.

After listening to Prog for over 50 years, I have to rank Genesis as top favorite, followed closely by Yes, then Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, ELP. Currently I’m Huge fan of Steven Wilson, Haken, Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic….

You should check out some of Jon Anderson’s collaborations with Vangelis. Good place to start is either “State of Independence” or the title track from ‘The Friends of Mr. Cairo”.

What an awesome choice from one of the greatest albums ever in prog and rock, period! The first time I saw this live they did the whole album as the set before the encore of Roundabout. Talk about an unreal concert, they were one of the few bands (ELP, Rush, King Crimson) who could rival Pink Floyd in concert or in the studio. Beyond belief song, gives me chills to this day. On top of everything, that first Yes show. We were doing some amazing mescaline, it was all over at the show and what a show to trip to. We must have 'flown' home as I don't remember driving, LOL! Thanks guys, modern audiences have no clue how good we had it seeing bands like this play over 3 hours for $6. Wow!

sitting in my friends basement, having just smoked a bowl and putting on this album that he'd just bought...he had his stereo hooked up to a lighting grid that would trigger different colored lights all over the room...stoned in the dark, no response from the lights until it does that little soft drum roll thing...freaked my brain!! still stays with me 50 yrs later!

My eyes were closed, my headphones were cranked, the room was dark and I was anticipating the big change. AHHH! Wonderful! Love Yes, the live Genesis 73 concert is magic, tribute group the Musical Box replicate this concert, stage layout, dress the same etc, the lead singer sounds just like Peter, Genesis have even endorsed them, if you get the chance you must see them, I have and what an experience.

I love that album!! Very classical feel to the majority of it. Quartet is my favorite section on the album. The music feels like the earlier work, although this was released in 1989. When you have the right musicians, magic happens, no matter how much time passes.And it did on ABW&H.

'Close To The Edge' brings back a rush of great memories from that era! I was in high school, and at the time, kids brought albums to school to trade and share (lend) with their friends. It was common to see kids walking around the hallways holding albums and textbooks, and using their lockers to store all these albums, or bring them to the lunchroom for discussion of their favorite bands and/or records. Album art meant a lot as well.

Please don't worry about interrupting or talking too much. You're conversation is fascinating. Interrupting is fine. I've heard the song a million times. Your thoughts about favorite bands was interesting, too. I dove in to Yes in '74 but I didn't realize that I like them a bit better than Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues and anyone else until about 20 years later. It was then that I settled on them as my favorite.

It's funny that you mentioned how each time you listen to a different band, that they become your favorite. I've done that too, but what I've discovered over the years is that I go through phases of really digging into the music of a particular band. I'll go through a Yes phase, then a month later a Pink Floyd phase, then a Black Sabbath phase, etc. As our moods and mindsets change, so do our taste of music. Fascinating stuff.
