The best way to improve at photography, is to exercise your critical eye. The ability to hone in on what bothers you in a photograph is an incredibly important skill to learn, and is pivotal to getting better at photography. In this video I critique some of your submitted images. If you would like more of these videos, let me know in the comments below!
You can email me at sendnickphotos@gmail.com to have your images included in the next critique

What I’m getting out of these critiques, is the fact that it gets me thinking more critically about the photos that I’ve captured recently and to revisit them again and as not be satisfied with “…well, that’s good enough…” thanks for the motivation Nick!

Hi Nick, it´s always great to hang out with you . Admittedly, I also saw the weaknesses but also the strengths of the pictures fairly quickly, but if only it comes to my own pictures I'm kind of blind, and more sessions of this kind would be great.

Not me. I have to look at my photos a couple times a week & I might not see something for a month or more, saying to myself, dmm, Can't believe I missed that. That is where doing a test print helps me out.

I love critique videos. I very often go back to my own images afterwards and look at them in a new light with a new eye on how they look and how I can improve next time. These types of videos are so educational not to mention the tips on how to remove things like halos and colour casts as in this one. More please!

Great video Nick, please do more! Your perspective and critiques are very educational. However, I think that one of your great strengths is the magic that you can do in post-processing. You have a real skill for maximizing the impact of an image through the subtle sculpting of light, color, and contrast in a very sophisticated manner. For example, your tips about differences in handling foreground vs mid/background shadows and linear gradient in the sky vs a vignette. I am trying to move more of my editing from LR into PS so, I really appreciate seeing how you use PS to affect these changes. The odd repair tips are great as well such as the sharpening halo repair and cloning bright leaves to cover hot spots in the forest. Keep these coming!

Thank you for taking the time to do critiques! Your way of commenting and adding tips and tricks to repair some of the image issues is awesome!! I would LOVE to see a weekly series but I also know that it takes a lot of time to do these. The fixing blown highlights with foliage was mind blowing for me, I have fought with blown highlights in trees for years and OMG I felt dumb when you fixed that so easily LOL. The neutralizing colorcasts is a method that I have never seen before and will be SO helpful. I am now on my way back to my most recent work to relook at all of them with a better eye. Thank you, this is one of the most informative critiques that I have watched.

I've been a photographer for many years but never have done post-processing other than cropping, because I wanted to hone my craft as part of the *experience* of taking a great photo, not how to edit one. But I can definitely see how it can help images I was sad about not being able to "perfectly" capture the lighting, or what-have-you. I've always been intimidated by Photoshop, so I use Lightroom to cull/crop my images, but you definitely make it look easy. Great vid!

Thanks Nick, that was a very informative and interesting video! I always learn something from you and your videos. I had no idea about the curves adjustment layer trick about holding down Alt while clicking on the Auto button. In fact I paused the video, opened up Photoshop and opened up some random shot of mine from the archives and tried it out. A few shots it seemed to do nothing, but on some it made a big difference. Yet another tool in the tool box I can pull out and try from time to time if I need to. Thanks again, Hope you're doing good!

always as nice to see how you look at other people's pictures but above all you take up and show and take up how to make a picture look better. But also which pitfalls to avoid, such as the fact that halos can occur when you sharpen an image a little too hard. So personally, I want to see more videos where you critique other people's photos, it gives me and others knowledge

Super!! I've always appreciated critiques of images, whether it's mine or another photographer's. I live in a very rural community that is limited in the amount of additional photog's who would be willing, or brave enough, to allow their work to be critiqued. So, I use youtube as a quasi-photo club. Honestly, some of what's being offered tend to put me to sleep(including a few of yours) but I'm wide awake and alert when critiques are given. Your critiques are very informative and impressive, so; DON'T STOP!!
