There is no shortage of people telling you that you don't need photoshop, and that it is too hard to learn... in this video i demonstrate how easy something like luminosity masks can be, even though everyone claims they are too difficult to spend time learning.

I'll just add, having bought a few of Nick's paid tutorials over the years, they are excellent, very easy to follow and unlock all kinds of tools and techniques like this. They are brilliant and will quickly and simply demystify Photoshop (and no he didn't ask me to say that). He is just a brilliant teacher and the production quality of his tutorials is excellent. Buying a paid tutorial is also a great way of saying thank you for all the amazing content, like this, that he posts for free. I think we, as subscribers, need to remember that. Thank you Nick. Genuinely one of the good guys.

I follow plenty of great photography channels but I rarely feel as enthused and encouraged as when I watch your videos. I appreciate your honesty and transparency, you cut through the BS within the wider scene and I come away feeling like I've learned something new. I have certainly been daunted by PS but the LR tutorials never seem to quite achieve 'that look' so I'm going to give this a try now with some of my old favourites. Serious respect for your work. Whatched lots of tutorials about luminosity masking and PS in general and must say you’re the only one out there, who gets to the point, raises the mist and explains things in simple, clear terms, so you can easily understand and incorporate that stuff into your editing. Other people - as you mentioned - kind of make it overtly confusing, to show you, how clever they are, who you will probably never get it. You’re the real dude, Tx!

Great video Nick. I started off with photoshop and only used lightroom for specific adjustments but mostly just for its great organisation tools and cataloging features. A few years later and I'm now using both applications for post processing. I've found LR is good at some stuff but I need PS for most of my processing. I've been greatly helped by buying your luminosity masking course and purchasing lumenzia as you recommended. This has opened up many more possibilities using PS. Of course, the more you get used to using them, the more you learn what you can do with them and the more they can do. And thank you for exploding the myth that lightroom is everything. Loved this video, Nick! I use luminosity masking in Capture One in essentially the same way (which seems to me to be far more controllable than in LR) to do the same thing as you're doing there - recovering highlights whilst keeping contrast with the levels tool. I think more important than the software you use, is to learn to use what you have and are comfortable with extremely well. I'm still trying to grasp Lightroom and all its features, which get better all the time! I do use Photoshop some as well but don't know it that well. But like any profession or anything in life really, the difference between someone who is good and someone who is very good and on another level comes down to how well they know the tools needed to do the job. Great video Nick. I like using luminosity masks, all thanks to you and your great tutorials. What I think confuses people is that there are several tools that do much the same thing. Like your brightening- you can use levels, curves, brightness/contrast, or exposure. How do you know which one is the tool to use? Same with colors. Seems there are hundreds of ways to skin the proverbial cat. You hit upon it yourself in your interview video with the folks from Photo Cascadia, it’s easier when you have less choices. Lr has limited choices which makes your tool, or slider, easier. But I totally agree, once you grasp the concept, you’ll love it. I love it and love all the possibilities. Thanks!!

Good comments, Nick! I look at it as a bag full of golf clubs. You don't play a course with only one. In my own case, I start in LR to do the basics and end up in PS and sometimes use an old version of NikFX as well. Each club has it's strength for the need.

This is great, i didn't know about those TK panels. I'll say the biggest barrier to this kind of masking and work in PS is that you have to know what your desired outcome is before you do something. For many people, working sliders in LR until it looks good to them is enough, they dont have the vision for wanting to achieve these kinds of results.
