Today, we'll take a look at a surprisingly improved knife, the Chris Reeve Knives (CRK) Large Inkosi, natural successor to the previously-reviewed Sebenza 25.

I think everyone has good points on CRK and any other brand. But it comes down to one thing, what you want. I personally saved up my funds and purchased a CRK inkosi insingo, and it is the best knife in my collection. I have Spydercos, liong mah, benchmade, ADV, Kizer, Ferum forge and Todd begg knives. So for a non biased non fanboy opinion, I love this knife. The ergos are amazing, I have average sized hands and I get no hot spots. It fits great in the pocket, the smoothness of this knife is better then other $400-$500 knives I own. This knife is exactly that, a knife of simplicity. It's designed to be easy to dissemble if you're in the field, and easy to sharpen on the fly. It feels solid in the hand and serves it's purpose. The only con I have is the thumbstuds but it's a small con. I personally believe allot of the price is in the warranty. I've seen people absolutely abuse their inkosi or sebenza or have it over years and put hard use into it. Send it back to CRK and get a brand new knife back after it's refurbished. The tolerances of CRK out beat ZT, spyderco, benchmade etc. Hands down.

"Condom full of Legos," LMAO! Not only a great review but the phrases you come up with somehow always convey your meaning in a hilariously descriptive way. I've been carrying my small, plain Sebenza 21 daily for a little over a year now. Prior to that, I carried a Benchmade 750 Pinnacle for 15 years (similar in size and basic design to the large Sebenza). I'd considered buying a large Sebenza 21 but I decided my next Chris Reeve would either be a small, Box Elder 21 or a Mnandi.

I just got this knife, large inkosi. I also have the large sebenza and I gotta say, other than general shape, they are different knives. I love the inkosi. It feels much more solid and more confidence inspiring, with the ceramic lock up, than the sebenza. The ergonomics are better. I’ve heard many complaints about the finger cutouts. They fit my hand just perfect, and make it more comfortable. My sebenza doesn’t have lock stick. It disengages so smooth, you can hardly tell when it’s unlocked. But then again, I don’t flick it open. The carburized lock face is harder than the blade tang, but I suspect brittle. Slamming it open will cause the carburization to flake and cause lock stick. Now the inkosi, with that ceramic detent/lock face, ball, that’s pretty durable. I still don’t flick it. And yeah, the price. $450 is a little steep, but I came into a little extra money and decided to buy a brand new one. This is a very deliberate folder, with no gimmicks. I think people need to realize that going in. It’s not a flipper and it’s obvious the way it’s designed. It is, however, a very well made, and solid folder. And CRK’s warranty is great. That almost makes it worth the price. They take good care of you, and the free “spa treatment”. Just pay shipping.

Andy Richardson Having owned both there’s some similarities, both titanium frame locks on washers, both good blade steels. That’s not enough to lift the bowie (and spyderco) to be of equal quality or value. The bowie didn’t stay with me, but nor did the inkosi, sebenzas are what’s right for me.

The downside of an adjustable pivot is that you need to keep it in a very specific range of adjustment. Especially for a knife that isn't particularly "flickable" anyway (having only a single thumb stud, without a thumb hole or a flipper), I'd rather have the tighten-and-forget-it bushing pivot any day.

The only thing that bugged me at first, was the difficulty opening at first. Different from my other framelocks and other knives. There's a small bit of a learning curve, but it isn't an issue anymore Totally worth the money! Think I'll grab one in micarta next. A little backup in case the cops steal my plain. I've already lost about 600$ in steel to the cops over the past 20 years. Luckily, they were all very beautiful knives and I wasnt charged for the crime. Methinks the cops had put them in their pockets. (Cold steel custom series black sable, cold steel custom series talwar, and a spyderco police). Im not a degenerate anymore, so should be OK

I understand nicks point about the inkosi. If someone ask me which sebenza to get I would always say the 21. I have owned both and decided just to keep the 25. But that’s my own preference because I like to tear down and tune knives. (I polished the washers when it was new.) The 21 is what is special. The idea that you can just tighten the pivot and it will be in that sweet spot. User friendly knife because of the tight tolerances. The inkosi and 25 was an evolution to make it easier to manufacture by having a pivot that the user tunes along with the floating stop pin. I think the sebenza is the modern day buck knife not really intended to be on the latest technology but keep the traditional design. I think I want the money to go towards that manual labor of factory tuning to perfection.

You would think that, at the price, there would be alternative blade steels to the bog-standard S35vn. Also, if you think the Inkosi is expensive in the US, they're £444.99 over here in the UK which (at today's exchange rate) is $588.67 !!!

Let's be real though: if you're going to spend $450 on a pocket knife, you're definitely someone who knows how to fiddle & tweak your knives. @neokuji
@neokuji 6 жыл бұрын
It’s much more real when you have them in hand side by side, even if most of the value is relative to personal preferences/taste, there’s that part that’s definitive based on the level of quality and usability felt when in hand that also factors in. For example although I didn’t keep either in the long term, the bowie felt (and sounded) cheaper than the inkosi did. Even if they were both overpriced in some perspectives, one was clearly better than the other, no matter my preference/taste.

I hear the cost gripes... I'm a bad man. I don't own a sebenza, but I do have a "sebenza". The knife cost me about £25. My knife is not a sebenza. But it is a good knife. The sebenza has been around since the 1980s and is a legend. Whilst I regret that my knife implies it is not a clone, I don't resent paying 10% of the money for say 80% of the knife. I have dial in pivot on 21 style knife, with a blade in D2 (as yet unconfirmed). The titanium slabs are well cut, and the knife is pleasure to use. I get that rip off designs could kill off innovation, but I struggle to aspire to pay $450 for a knife that had been available for thirty years...
@neokuji

40% of, no more. There was the original “Titanium Folder” before the Sebenza which has had several iterations over the years (H (handmades), PP (pre-production), P (first production), originals, regulars, MM (classics), and now the 21s).

When griping the handle har what keeps the ceramic ball from going in further or trying to? Seems like a lot of presure at all times on that tiny ball. Yes, i know its strong and ceramic and everything but talk about making it prove it's strong, literally everytime you grab the knife. I don't like it, theres a sheering effect on it when griped rather then just geting tighter like a lock bar insert. I know this is a small knife for more office type people or sit around a mansion and open a package with but still. A frame lock is a very primitive design anf i'm not impressed with the ceramic ball. Seems like catostrophic failure waiting to happen. I'n bridge making metals are layered so in case something gives the bridge won't collapse. I've kept an eye on Chris Reeve knives over the years to see if they would come out with something bigger or better. Imagine a 4.5 inch Sebenza with a well made lock back. That would be something to get excited about. A 3 5 inch blade knife is pretty tiny and small with a frame lock the handle is now the lock but then you no longer have a handle, this ball has the handle going further in for even less handle. Frame lock on a oversized handle works pretty good but on these dainty tiny little folders it just makes it worse. I'm a self defense fighting knife guy myself but i do like well made knives. Oh well, .aybe Chris Reeve knives just arn't for me. A guy on youtube tested one of there fixedblades with some cheap fixedblades in the woods once and the Chris Reeve broke in half.

Who cares about a better warranty once you spend 450 on a knife? Buy a good spyderco for 200 with the same or better steel and they have a really good warranty that even if they charge you 20 bucks every time you sent it in youd be good for years before you even came close to making your money back if yoy went with crk
@neokuji
@neokuji 6 жыл бұрын
ZT produces nothing that is up to the quality of a CRK folder. Spyderco fasteners are shallow and soft, there’s a limited amount of maintenance that can be performed before needing new hardware, which they don’t sell you, but you can send the knife in for. 🙄

Aaron Stone alright you have to quit with this fan boy nonsense, you can get the exact same steel as a crk on a spyderco and how much maintence are you doing to your knife that it no longer can be taken apart?? If you're doing it right you will never run into that problem and if you send in the knife and they replace it for you why would it matter?? ZT tolerances are nearly the same....theyre cnc machines...its not like they have magical machines. How much does crk get right consistently?? For 450 the knife should be absolutely flawless and a nearly perfect rep but they still get lockstick and still have flaws. You yourself said it in a past comment that you bought one with too many issues that you ended up returning. But a cr knife is perfect 😮how could it have issues then??

This is also ridiculous for a knife with scales and only on bronze bushings. Sorry but Chris Reeve is not moving with the times. Definitely not a gem...

Like thats just your Opinion, man. personally have lots of knives, i have the CRK's on the top of the favorite list despite others opinions of it. its a user for sure. also i use the CRK grease and without wrist flicking, i can get it to flick out all the time. Shrug

Tactical Center this! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I add a drop of oil to the detent track (which mixes with the grease to help keep it from drying)

Aaron Stone it's suppose to dry. It's like a Teflon washer when it does and keeps out dust.

agree to disagree, recommendation is to clean and regrease should action become gritty or stiff (happens when grease dries and gets a lil flaky or grainy). This January I got a starbenza that was new old stock, sat for five years, grease so dry it was graphite and felt welded shut LOL. Nothing was helping that thing but maintenance. (I didn’t keep it because of a couple other issues and the fact that they were charging new pricing on old stock/old heat treat). I know the guy who bought it from the dealer after I returned it he performed his maintenance and said it was good to go except for those issues I mentioned to him privately, weren’t enough to change his mind though, and he still purchased it, and has kept it.

Aaron Stone if it's gritty it's most likely junk along the detent track. Clean with soap and water and dry, or remove the blade and do the same as well as cleaning the detent. Proven threads on this. Also don't apply too much grease. That may have been your issue. Tim reeves has a video on applying new grease and says to apply no more or even less than he has. Regardless you can disagree all you want. The grease is suppose to dry per reeves himself, please read his old comments about it. You should only have to clean and re apply once a year unless it gets really dirty really often. And the grease if applied correctly doesnt need any oil to flick out without wrist.

What Riley said. I’m left handed and have ordered left handed models direct as well as purchased from ADs, owned slightly over half dozen left handed CRK’s, (currently 3 left handed sebenzas and a left handed mnandi. I’m extremely grateful CRK makes full left handed versions of every knife!

This is a great knife if it was $250... Titanium with S35VN??? Meh... For $450 I would rather have a semi-custom like Olamic or even a Kiezer with better materials and much more interesting designs... I will match my Olamic 247 against any CRK any day of the week for quality and fit and finish... Look at Nick's Swish... Get with the times CRK... It's not 1994 anymore...

I'm with you. I could do a whole lot of whoring for $450. But I wouldn't. However, I could buy at least half a car which would keep me and family mobile for a year or two. I could keep the roof over my head for half a month. I could have paid over half the child care for my youngest before she went to school. I could buy bicycles for the whole family. I could service my car, and fit four replacement tyres. Etc etc. $450 is a bundle of cash. If you love knives and you can afford it, go ahead and buy a legendary Chris Reeve. I'm sure it will be everything that people say. If you want a lesser knife for a lot less money, try a value engineered titanium frame lock. Just don't pretend you bought the Chris Reeve.

The extra money you're paying is for the ridiculously tight tolerances and exceptional finishing. I've inspected mine very closely under 50x magnification, and cannot find a single flaw. Yes you can buy a cold steel recon 1 with s35vn for 80 bucks, and it'll probably have similar edge retention, but it lacks the beauty of a CRK. This is pocket jewelry for guys
