I use these warmers all the time. To turn it off, simply disconnect the burner from the tank like you would if you were filling it with fluid.

This. You can also light it up by dropping a tiny amount of fuel on the burner itself, but that is of course extra fire hazard, so be careful with that.

Use a ziploc to turn it off like this...kzfaq.info/get/bejne/acpmgtJn2bquiYE.html It's much easier and provides better storage to slow down evaporation of the lighter fluid too.

Friggin' great review! To 'switch' the warmer off, simply hold it in your hands and block the air holes for a couple of minutes, or, put it in a plastic ziplock bag to starve it of oxygen (it doesn't get hot enough to melt the bag!) You can also tweak the catalyst burner and lid for a tighter fit just by pushing in the really soft metal sides.

Good review, one of the better ones...... You got more things in the review right then some of the messes out there, especially filling, capping with converter and then letting it sit for 2-3 minutes, this will build up the fuel vapor under the convert, in the small air chamber located there. I have seen so many reviews letting it sit with the converter off, this doesn’t do a thing. Also not turning it into a roaring flare when lightning, just the heat, not big flame needed to get the chemical oxidation process started, good advice. There is a review where the guy soaks the converter, to light it easier and sets it on fire with a 6-7 inch flame, roaring for several minutes, bad idea and dangerous. Ok, here are some thoughts, about that loose cap, you can squeeze the cap at the bottom, slightly, gently along the open edge to tighten the fit, I sometimes have to do this to the body of my Zippo lighter to get the insert to fit tighter, just don’t over do it, does not need much pressure. A USB lighter with light this very well and cleanly, no flame soot, there is a KZfaq guy who has started one with a broken, aka empty, lighter, just using the sparks of the flint. Sooting the catalytic converter should be avoided, i.e. too much flame, or getting lighter fuel on the converter, it will damage it with impurities, coating the platinum, and make it hard to start, less heat. I would advise rebuilding the converter, you can buy higher grade platinum impregnate materials then what comes with this. It will start easier, burns hotter, it’s also cheaper then buying a new head, about 1/2 the cost. You should let the hand warm heat up unbagged for 10 minutes upright. This will start to heat the tank, and the fuel inside, improving vaporization, increasing the heat drastically. Oil lanterns work the same way, when lighting, turn the lamp up to about 1/3 less then the light needed. In ten minutes the tank, the metal on top will heat up the oil making it flow more efficiently in the wick and increasing the size of the flame. Turing the wick up too high aka where you want it, while the oil is cold is the reason you seem to automagically get a soothed globe. I finally learned this lesson the hard way. If you can safely warm the metal tank with fuel in it, a bit, the converter will start up easier, the reason, vaporization. The bag is not only used to protect the hands from burning but also control the oxygen, it the hand warmer gets too hot, close the bag tighter, open it more for more heat. Fueling these things. I find a free syringe, no needle, from a pharmacy easier to use, even with my Zippo lighters. Just premeasured what you need from that plastic filler cup so you know the syringe numbers equivalent for the hours you need, get a small diameter leak proof bottle to hold the fuel. Personally I just loaded a few small bottles each with the exact amount of fuel needed from that filler cup, use the syringe to empty the bottle. That way I don’t have to measure it out, look at the numbers on the syringe, good for fishing or camping where the less fiddling the better, just one bottle per fillings. About the plastic filler cup, keeping up with it, the Japan, Korean made Peacock brand I believe can store the filler cup under the main cap when not in use, Peacocks are excellent hand warmer, very good fit, coming in 3 sizes baby/mini, standard and a giant that runs 24 hours. Also Whitby from the UK is a very good warmer, every thing snaps on, best of all, it has a rubber filler port on the tank’s shoulder. You can fill it by just inserting the filler tube in the port, the port self seals, no removal of the converter. I own a Whitby, yes, the same UK sea port of Dracula fame. Why is this filler port good? Well, no worries of dropping the catalytic converter loosing it on a dark ground, high grass, bottom of boat or worse in the water.

Thank you for the great video. Like you, I have had one of these for 2 or 3 years and I love it. Yes, it takes a little prep work to get going but it is worth it. I have tried a few hand warmers in the past and this is the most reliable by far and it has a decent heat output. I put mine in a small ziplock bag to put it out and it takes about 10 minutes for it to cool down.

I am having trouble getting mine going for the first time. Do I need to fluff the grey "wool" in the first cap? I don't like that I can't tell if enough fluid is in there. What happens if it overfills? I head it to a candle flame. The thing was warm after holding it on the flame. So I thought it was lit. I capped it but 5 minutes later it cooled off. Any ideas? I am just guessing how much fluid is in there. Lord only knows where the plastic cup is. Help! It is sooo cold. 🥶

What Landon says is true, you can pull the burner. My brothers both decided they could not deal with the smell but hated the waste as well. So they went with an electronic option, the Celestron Firecel. It only needs to be charged by micro USB, is easily turned off and back on, provides decent heat, and can in a pinch give you extra phone battery life.

I recently purchased a bunch of these to use at work and I put one in every pocket . And man these work great . I found a cheaper fuel alternative here in Australia called shellite . Oh and I rebuilt the burner in one of my old zippo handwarmer with a piece of catalyst material I got from Ebay. I just took out the metal retainer took out the old one and slipped in the new then installed the metallic clip back on . Better than spending $15 for a new replacement burner.

Yep leave it in the soft bag, then put that in a plastic bag. It goes out in just a few minutes. And it's still full just needs to be re-lit. Like you say, it's not super hot, and less so in it's soft bag, it's not going to melt the plastic.

Love these things, I have two of these larger black ones and one smaller one in white. The way I turn them off is popping out the catalytic burner with a knife and let it cool off for a few minutes, unfortunately your lighter fluid will still evaporate of course. Also a little tip is to use a butane lighter to heat up the burner, I just use a cheap Ronson flip lighter and it works great. (Nice Fahrenheit reference by the way)

Great review! This is how a Zippo functions....Zippo hand warmers do not run on lighter fluid..in fact lighter fluid should NEVER touch the catalytic burner ot it will be ruined. ..but instead run on the "fumes of the lighter fluid" as it evaporates up from below and into the little burner head. As the fumes fill the catalytic burner material, a grey fuzzy stuff coated with a very light coating of platinum found it the head that pops off when filling.....the burner begins to glow like an ember when a match is put to it. The ember...which looks almost like the tip of a cigar in a dark room will then continues to glow with heat, as it consumes the fumes which constantly rise up from the bottom fuel holder which you fill. When all the fuel has evaporated, often 12 to 20 hours..the burner simply goes out. Your cars converter has heat from the engine flow over tiny platinum balls found in your card converter..this burns off engine odors. The hand warmer operates almost the same way.

i live in ontario canada.. it gets as low as -35 celsius on the rough days of winter. i do collect zippos, i have a few 8 and 16 hour hand warmers. i dont usually carry them to walk but they are handy in the truck if it wont start or something like that. i rather the 8 hour ones because unless you are ice fishing or hunting its rare to need it for a full 16 hours. i got a mini 5oz jerry can i carry spare fluid in, if you have one buy a small flask for extra fuel

I haven’t tried putting it in a zip lock bag but I could see where you could conserve fuel that way. Another method to stop the heat is to quickly remove the small catalytic/burner part and place it on a plate or saucer to cool.

I have warmers that are a vinyl bag with a liquid inside that I believe is a super saturated salt solution. There is a metal disc inside that you snap and the solution begins to crystallize which gives off heat. To reuse it, you just need to boil it

So much confusion here - 1) you can easily turn it off - 1) place it in a ziplock inside its cover and it will go out it < 10 min or 2) on your way inside place the bottom of it in a snow bank / or next to a piece of ice and it will cold shock and “turn off” 2) you definitely don’t need, (and should NOT apply “a lot of flame” kiss the sides of the catalyst for ~ 5 sec each and your done, doing more will wear out your catalyst and decrease function. Try instead filling it with fluid, completely closing it, catalyst and cap, in bag for ~ 3-4 minutes keeping it warm to start evaporation and it will light quickly. I use a USB lighter only with mine. 3) If you get a better version, (not a zippo) with a few tweaks it will definitely! get so warm that you cannot hold it in you bare hands 4) Use camp fuel/ white gas/Naptha and save your money. Add 30ml of essential oil of your choice to 1 L of fuel and the odor is much improved. 5) squeeze the cap tightly and it will fit better 6) Try an s-Boston and you will be far happier -

And I still love being Canadian) Wondering if it would be effective, and about the fumes... having this thing lit in a closed container for 12+ hours, would I need to "air out" the car before sitting in? Does anyone have experience with it in this sort of situation?

It may leave a chemical film on the windows, and yes I would crack a window and blast the heater for a few. I would also set it in a metal coffee can or something like it if you are going to leave it overnight. Don't burn up your car. Good luck. I'd do it if it were that cold here.

Quick info on this that has probably been said 100 times so I'll be brief. 1. Turn off by popping the part you light off (not with fingers) they are made to be disconnected and replaced as needed.However evaporation is still a thing so keep that in mind. 2. Squeeze lid and it will tighten to your liking. 3. Buy the small ones, one for both hands. More heat because less space and metal to heat using exactly the same mechanism.. Ie same heat out put as the big ones. 4.the small ones do get hot enough that you can't hold them without a lot of pain bagless but the option is there when your hands are already very cold like if you need to work but then can grab one when your hands are too cold. 5.the small ones can stand up like a Zippo lighter the big one is round top and bottom. 6. They do take continuous flame for much longer than he showed in my experience so a Zippo lighter is a good companion. Anyone with further questions feel free to ask and if I get the notification I'll answer I have a big and 2 small ones.

With the chemical hand warmers it's easy to just open the package and activate it, they get nice and hot and stay that way for hours. I had the zippo and you don't know if it's working half the time and doesn't give you the instant warmth you need. Plus if you need the chemical one every day cost will be a issue. Milwaukee tools has battery powered gloves and jackets that are awesome. Pricey but if you use them everyday for 4 months it will pay for it self in 1 winter

I just got one of these and I agree with what you said on your review. The smell is familiar to anyone who uses or has used a Zippo lighter. Invariably, I have fluid run out and it does evaporate quickly but be sure and read directions prior to use. I didn't think it was too warm either. I took the bag off and touched it to my cheek and it was uncomfy to a sensitive face. Hands no problem. They make a 6 hr. version and the 12 hr. one like yours (and mine). About 13 hogs at Wally World. Oh, and Zippo lighter fluid is not always available but they say Ronsonol is OK. Uh, Zippo now owns Ronsonol, so buy the least expensive.

What I do snowboarding is put the 6 hour ones (just smaller, same size burner), and slip them inbetween inner and outer gloves. I used to use the reusable ones but for me this works just as well One thing to note though is they can be a touch inconsistant depending on how much air they get, so whether the end of the bag faces toward the glove hole or the fingers, and how far its in. Im guessing with only one layer it would work better

hey Nick, might wanna check out the Zippo website again! Saw a re-usable hand warmer that doesn't use fluid and flame, also acts as a power bank from what i understand.

i bought this warmer last week and only started to use couple time. The warmer can only last about 2 hours for the amount of fluid that recommended by the instructions? How can i slow it down ? Secondly the warmer must be put inside the pouch because it was very hot sometimes.

My wife has cold hands all the time and has been using one for over a year 24/7/365. My filler container is like a narrow bowl with a long neck. Care is needed so I don't knock it over. Lot of lighter fluid on the table. Don't ask how I know...
@brucemcconnell1467

Keep it in the little bag so it won't lose the top and it works better that way. You can turn it off by removing the little burner using the cap to pop it off.

34C in Brisbane Australia (Petrie to be exact). I would seriously die in -31C without being in a room surrounded by fire. A car would need to have the radiator water piping through the seat and a plug-in hot suit for me to wear. I used to live about 2000km North here, where when it got to 24C we'd be putting on jumpers, jeans and socks. When Winter really hit and it dropped to 11C, we'd have the fire raging. Yes, almost everyone up there has a fireplace or potbelly stove to sit by when it gets really cold LOLZ.

I got one of these, figured I should stop using the chemical heaters that only work half the time. The one I got keeps warm, unless it is out of the bag, then it becomes too hot to touch for more than a second or two. Must be all the extra oxygen or something. At first, I was a little disappointed that it cant be switched off after being lit, until I realized how cheap it is to operate. Let the thing burn itself out- it only costs pennies to run for 8 hours or so. I'm not too well off, but I can at least afford to let this thing heat the inside of a drawer for a few hours.

I’m not sure I understand what is going on with this device. The user lights the wick with a flame, but it’s not burning for twelve hours? If there is no flame, how is it creating heat?
@NickShabazz
@NickShabazz 6 жыл бұрын
Chemical reactions can create heat without fire.
@SuperPussyFinger

I don’t think it’s just a chemical reaction. I believe it is actually smoldering, which seems to explain why it is ignited with a flame.
@MrRPM110

Burning ≠ flame..you are right it is type of combustion(burning) just like yourself said...it is called smoldering...which is a chemical reaction...all combustion is chemical reaction...flame or not...
@s.h.v.c2865
@s.h.v.c2865 6 жыл бұрын
The match is simply to kick start the reaction, not igniting anything. You don't need to touch the flame to the burner, just near it
