The Vector Thunderbird Butane Torch is a great way to turn your Zippo lighter from a tough-to-keep-fueled antique into a modern, seriously hardcore little torch. Today, I quickly tell you why.

I smoke cigars. The torch insert makes lighting a cigar a non-issue. It makes using a zippo to light a stogie more realistic.

I don't smoke, but sometimes I like to carry a lighter simply because it's useful to have. I switched over from Bic to Zippos recently because I think Zippos are neat and pretty things to carry everyday. I learned about fuel evaporation when I ran out of fuel one day... It's a disappointing thing because, being a non-smoker, I get very little use out of every fill up. Thanks for the review, this product will save me headaches. I bought the one that works analogously to the original Zippos where the flame keeps going until you close the lid. Can't wait to get it.

Great that you reviewed this. I've had one for a couple years. It's perfect to replace the zippo insert in the custom zippo cases a lot of EDC guys are making (black snow customs, wastelandoddities...) and is the ultimate lighter for paracord projects and cigars. Thanks!

I have heard so many great things about these inserts but I really like the original Zippo fuel. When I was in the hospital last and went for smokes I only used my Zippo which lasted for 15 days and then with the extra case from Zippo where you can store some lighter fluid I got another 10 days out of it. I can see that this would be the way better solution but for me the Zippo would lose it's charme.

Here are 3 reasons I collect pocket knives: I like the beauty of them. I like the feel of them and I like the sound they make opening and closing them. Although I don't smoke I own about 20 Zippo lighters for the same reasons I collect knives. Since I don't actually use the lighters I don't put fluid in them because it would just evaporate. But I will buy one of these inserts just to have a functional lighter. Thanks for the review, Nick.

You can get a butane insert that produces a regular flame if the torch is too much. It does use a flint and spark wheel like a regular zippo insert though.

I use a Xicar torch lighter with a similar but double flame and another thing on the good side is that these flames are virtually wind proof when lighting up. I think I'll pick one of these inserts up. I've been wondering for years why Zippo hadn't done this themselves. Must be a tradition thing. Great review as always!

zippo did, for a time, but then discontinued it. it seemed to have a lot of reliability issues, too. it makes sense, zippo is a company good at working with lighter fluid, but doesn't have a ton of experience with butane. i imagine they're happy to let these inserts take up the mantle.
@sonmitch98

@@kaitlyn__L They stopped making them because they got sued by a ecig company that had a product called Blu. Which was the same name zippo called their lighters.

You missed the fatal flaw (and key advantage of the original insert) here: you have to keep pressing the button to keep getting flame. Zippos (and that peanut lighter you prefer) are more useful than butane lighters because you can light them, stand them up on a surface, and use two hands to do things like melting and shaping cordage, sealing plastic seams, setting heat shrink tubing, etc. Sure, this butane torch doesn't leak fuel fumes like an old Zippo but it robs the lighter of much of its functionality as a tool for applying heat in a controlled way
@christopherbackus5578
@christopherbackus5578 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. But I understand why people would want butane. Refilling my zippo every week burns about 24oz. of fuel a year. It isn't much, but considering how much of that fuel is lost to evaporation, butane would end up being a lot cheaper. I should find out if thunderbird makes butane inserts for the zippo slim. There is a butane insert that functions like a regular zippo insert though. The cam spring opens the gas valve when you pop the lighter open, then you spark it like a regular old zippo.
@mnemonic5819
@mnemonic5819 7 жыл бұрын
The thing is, butane torches are specifically made for pipes and cigars. They are not utility lighters, like your Peanuts or old trench lighters the Douglass Field Lighter is based on (of which your criticism would be 10000% valid). For the purpose it's designed for, this Zippo insert is a superb device.

HammerHill totally agree, but they do make one with the "original flame" and you just light it and forget it, just like a peanut lighter, but with the great wind resistance. I highly recommend!

I still flare up the occasional Marlboro.. Nasty, nasty habit.. I like the looks and idea of Zippos..I've purchased a few good ones with the intent to buy more.. But, as you said the fluid evaporates in about a week. Flints can wear out pretty quick..A cheap Bic lighter can last months.. If the 80s come back, a Bic is much better for hitting the pipe too (wasn't really my thing).. Anyway, I heard the O ring on the peanut lighters keeps the fluid from evaporating.. Can someone confirm if this is true ? Or, how long does it take for the peanut lighter fluid to evaporate ? Thanks...

Please review some of the plasma/Edison/Tesla lighters! I have several and wont go back to traditional liquid fueled lighters. I light my grill and fires with the stick version and the wife lights her cigs with the smaller version.... They are cheap and micro USB rechargeable.... Wind proof too! Also... They are geek cool! Every time I use one or the other in a social situation, several people want to see what it is and how it works... Just search "plasma lighters" on Amazon to get a whole bunch of options available...

I've owned a Zippo or 2. But in the end, they're a lighter, and honestly, a not very good lighter for out in the scrub. I Bic or 2 take up much less room than a Zippo, a container of fluid and the spare wicks and flints. In my humble opinion, Zippo's are good as nostalgia pieces and might look okay in a display case, but they're not a very functional item. Believe me, I really wanted my first Zippo to be my go to lighter. But they're too high maintenance. Kinda like having a cheap steel folder and having to have a stash of replacement blades because you can only cut with it 26 times before the blade becomes unusable.
