Watch the full series of British Masters feat Johnny Marr, John Lydon and Bryan Ferry: bit.ly/BritishMasters
In the ninth chapter of our British Masters series, the Quietus editor John Doran meets up with Manic Street Preachers main spokesman Nicky Wire to discuss their new album 'Rewind The Film' and its forthcoming spikier sibling 'Futurology'.
In Johns words: "The Manics appeared in the early 90's antagonizing nearly everyone they came across with their fiercely anti-fashion stance. They put out a homespun philosophy of culture alienation, boredom and despair wrapped in fake leopard skin and lipstick. They rejected slacker culture in favour of proud working class intellectualism and self-determination. Forget the Libertines, Manic Street Preachers are the last truly great mainstream British rock band"

It's always difficult to announce outloud, "X is my favorite band," but Manic Street Preachers is always at the tip of my tongue, they are everything great about rock n roll: music, energy, aesthetics, drugs, sex, poetry. Who else would I like to see on this? Aphex Twin, Genesis P Orridge, Skepta, Keith Levene, Siouxsie, Nik Void, Bruno Wizard

Fucking LOVE Wire. He's totally right about modern bands; there's rarely any real depth to the songs. Just chanted lyrics.

I stopped listening from 2007 except to bands who got big before then and carried on releasing albums. Clean Bandit are OK but they hire lead singers who use autotune in the recording studio.

@@lemsip207 i also think that being talented in singing isn't always necessary for it to be a good song, if you're only singing of other people's lyrics.

@@ogabugabedj1977 I would rather hear a bad singer without autotune than one with autotune and there were some bad singers around in the 70's. Johnny Rotten at first until he got some voice training. You don't have to be a great singer but you do have to be a halfway decent singer.

@@lemsip207 oh i agree very much with you, hearing john lydon for example is an example of you don't have to be a amazing singer if you want to get your message across. and i'd say people do have different taste in listening different singing styles, but for me as long if it's amazing then its okay for me

Enjoyable interview...I'd make the case for Primal Scream as the best British band. Consistently innovative, artistically groundbreaking over more than three decades, musically and aesthetically indefinable and still making relevant music.

"Saturday mornings I feel so bad for my children because all they've got are ugly, moralising chefs on the TV who I fucking despise, telling me how to eat...these people will ruin music, it's like Mumford & Sons obviously eat really well, and that's why their music is so fucking awful. You think Kurt Cobain was eating well when he was making In Utero? bad food equals good music" - Nicky Wire

There's always CBBC which is why there are no longer children's programmes on the main channels on Saturday mornings. I always hated those programmes when they started when I was a teenager despite them being popular with teenagers and adults as well as children. My brother would watch them and I would hide in my bedroom listening to the radio or go out. I did like the Chart Show on ITV as that was more serious. I was so glad when I got cable TV through NTL because then I could watch BBC News 24 instead as there is often a travel programme on Saturday mornings.
