Thank you so much for this video, I took a break from school to focus on making HM3 and felt very guilty about it, but seeing you talk about how you utilized your time wisely and despite the hardships of military life still getting your degree is really inspiring. I wish I would have had a mentor like you when I got to my first command, definitely would've gotten alot more done. Bravo Zulu shipmate!

I got my BA in 1979 while in the Navy ... I finished in 3.5 years of active duty .... gained a commission through NOCS with it. I did it with a combination of previous college work, CLEP & DANTES tests ; Navy Technical training (A & C schools and even BOOT CAMP); and PACE onboard college classes while on WESTPAC... used Regents External Degree Program of the University of the State of New York .... NOW CALLED Excelsior College ... total out of pocket .... about $500 ... and when I left the Navy, I STILL had the GI Bill and got two Masters degrees with it....

Clep and DSST exams are also affordable way to earn college credits. If you are active duty each initial exam is free. its about 100$ pre exam, when you pass you earn a legitimate college credit for the course. Its an alternative for paying for a course. You can see the pass rates for exams and study rather then spending 8 to 16 weeks on a course. Its more of a "Study smart not hard" method in my opinion. especially classes like Eng 103 research paper. I tested out of that and many other courses without having to take a 16 week online class or in person. its worth looking into for everyone active duty or not

(This is more for officers so I’m sorry but just an FYI) My dad was a ROTC nerd at Berkley and he got a Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering Degree (He was a Weapons officer on Fast Attack Subs during Reagan, idk how I came out with two function brain cells and he’s so smart- BUT ANYWAYS). During his second enlistment he was able to talk to his command and they allowed him to go get his MBA from James Madison University and he didn’t have to use his TA or GI because his CO worked it out so while he was getting his Masters in Harrisonburg he taught Naval History at VMI (Virginia Military Institute) in Lexington. He said it was a bitch if a commute but worth it because he got to keep all his assistance and still get his masters. He THEN PROCEEDED during his last enlistment (bc he didn’t make rank to stay on Subs) to go teach Naval Topics and History at Virginia Tech’s ROTC and got his Second Masters in Engineering again without using his benefits. TALK 👏🏻 TO 👏🏻 YOUR 👏🏻 COMMAND 👏🏻. My dad was a smart dude and came from a very underprivileged background so he knew how to get where he wanted to be through hard work. But there are so many opportunities and if the Navy sees your worth they will try to help you! Granted this was all back in the 80’s/90’s but I doubt its changed THAT much. Thank u for coming to my TedTalk

Now this is something you could never get done in the infantry unless on a second enlistment and at a slower "B" billet job (ex. Recruiting, embassy duty), not a "victor" (infantry) unit. Almost became a mustang (officer who was formerly enlisted) by doing the MECEP program. Very enticing but I didn't want to do four years of school after six in and then owe another six to the Corps.

I know a warrant is more of a specialist. I would like to get some feed back as your content is very descriptive. Thank you and keep up the good work 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Kudos for finishing your degree over a long period of time. Takes sustained motivation. I am non-military and went to school full time in early 70s. School was super cheap then, and it's outrageous it's so expensive today. I dropped out after 2 years (50% of people don't finish college they enroll in). I dropped out because it was the wrong dysfunctional school for me and not ready. Moved to Boston with $150 bucks in my pocket and ended up with a $900 school loan which i did repay and that got me a credit card in the 70s when they were not handing them out like candy. Went to work at BU in mid 70s and they had a program if you got a B or better they would pay for the class. So I took advantage of that over 1.5 years and basically made up the last semester of full time school that I dropped out. Flash forward to 1980 and I was working in a computer firm and because they did research they would pay for your schooling, even support staff. Went to school nights (2 nights a week for 2 classes) and summers (1 class over the summer) from 1980-84 and finally graduated in 1984 summa cum laude with honors in my major of MGMT/MIS. So that was a total of 13 years on and off. THere were other people my age at 27 in my last school and some of those people went to school for 8 years. IT requires persistance and discipline but well worth it as my income doubled after that and the BS degree opened many doors. also it teaches you self-discipline which is probably the biggest character trait people struggle with.

I do know Navy peeps that crossed over; some came back and some stayed Army National Guard. Golden Dream, if I may ask a question. How much did/will you pay for your education? I served six years in the Marine Corps and took classes when I had a billet that was an "8 to 5" job. After my discharge I used the G.I. Bill to to get my undergrad degree and my Masters. Do you know what it cost me? Nothing, nada, zip, zero. I graduated both degrees with NO student debt. If fact I wound up making money because I went to work for the city of Phoenix who has a tuition reimbursement program and was reimbursed for money the G.I. Bill gave me. Hmmm, pay out of pocket or get paid to get your education. I vote for the latter.
