Problem is not martinucci. Di stefano is the real problem..He nails/owns this aria.. And after Pippo u cant listen to someone else..As simple as that

Should it always be a contest of who's best or can we enjoy or be interested in other tenors that sing the same songs or arias? I don't think of Di Stefano when I listen to Martinucci singing this song, as my expectation is different.
@Agorante3 жыл бұрын
If you can only enjoy arias as sung by Di Stefano. My condolences. But do not despair, medical advances are made all the time.

Much better produced high notes than Di Stefano. Di Stefano sings his high notes much too open.

I know there's a world of difference between hearing a singer "live" and in a recording...be it studio recording or video as here. However, I've studied voices for 40 years and tenors particularly and I hear very little hear (and on other recordings of Martinucci) to fault. I am amazed that until today I never even heard his name mentioned. To ear on videos he seems to have all the virtues of "old school" singers....I shouldn't confuse him with the "mosquitos" (as dubbed by Tebaldi). Was he 'inconsistent" or "difficult to work with"? Clearly, I would favor his voice over anything I've ever heard ( on tape or video) of Jose Carreras. This is not a comment on Jose's personhood or humanity....It seems it takes the smallest "tweak" to send a career into obscurity but lots of "things" need to line up for a career to be one of prominence....voice is only part of the mix. By the by, his voice did NOT crack on the Bflat at the end.....

I heard Martinucci at San Francisco Opera singing Calaf in Turandot. It is a big, rich Italianate tenor voice. He is short like Carreras or del Monaco. His sound is more like that of del Monaco than Carreras. Probably the best Italian dramatic since Corelli.

@@Agorante Thank you for your reply.....How fortunate it "sounds" that you'd have heard this voice live.....I heard Pavarotti in concert at Boston Symphony Hall years ago. He sang 22 arias and 7 encores. As a tenor, I knew all the "notes" to come and created bruises (she claimed) on the wrist of my lady friend as I tensed hoping he'd sing the big notes fine. I heard a shade pass over a couple of notes, but nothing more than that. Two days later in the Boston Globe, the tennis reporter, Bud Collins, was singing (sorry...) the praises of Pavo who was a tennis fan and friend of Collins. In fact, stayed at Collins house during the week of the concert. 20 minutes before "show time", Pavo considered cancelling as he'd been dealing with a head cold the whole week.....and I suggest that the most attentive listeners (I will brag myself into that group) could not have guessed at any of the tale Collins told in his column. Oh, sure that's talent...but there's more to it than that.....I'm happy to hear what that "more" might be. Thanks again for your response, Patrick Boyle....Pip pip

Those two tenors don't sound like each other at all. How can you compare a big voice like Martinucci with an agile, lyric tenor like Kraus?
