You see that object I'm pulling out of the mud! I really was not expecting that! There are so many exciting finds in this video and it was wonderful reliving the excitement of finding them when I edited this video. And Wow, there is a fantastic coin find too. When I initially found it I thought it was an old penny but it turned out to be something far rarer. As always, one of the best things about these finds, is exploring the story behind them. I always learn so much miscellaneous information from these muddy treasures.
Thank you for watching. If you are inspired to try mudlarking then you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority. Details to be found here:-
www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tha...
Follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart for more fascinating finds.
See you soon.
Love Nicola

I believe that large wooden oval shaped piece is from a WWII aircraft. The electrical fittings are for bulkhead cannon plugs. Not all aircraft parts are aluminum. Note all the screw holes around the edges. Take photos with a ruler for scale and send them to Duxford, the Imperial Air War Museum. You may have a piece from the Battle of Britain!

Please don't be self-conscious about your excitement over the glorious and mysterious treasures you find along the Thames. You make us feel as though we're there, getting our hands muddy, eager to rinse something off for a better look. The Imperial Light piece is beautiful, and I love your idea of mounting it off-center on the oval wooden thingamabob. Thanks for the information on Margaret Mellis, I can see why she inspires you. All the best to you, Nicola.

Another absolutely brilliant film, Nicola. I was born 70 years ago on the banks of that river - in the York Road General Laying-In Hospital, but I've learned so much more about the history of that amazing river from your films than I ever have from any other source. You're addictive to watch and your enthusiasm is contagious - in a very wonderful way. Thanks so much.

I love that no matter how many times you have gone mudlarking and the wonderful things you have found, you still get very excited with your finds, particularly if it involves some researching. The wooden oval thing you found reminds me of a storage cover you would find on a wooden yacht or boat. Congratulations to the three Searcher mag winners

The imperial Light plaque has 2.0 CP on it indicating 2 candlepower. This could have been off an electric lamp or possibly Acetylene powered lamp. I imagine the latter, as it is big eoough to come off of a larger tank. (Here in the U.S. some houses had a buried underground tank that they dumped Carbide and water into to generate gas to light up a home. Same principle as a miners lamp but on a much larger scale). On the wood plaque, the top connector with the pins is a commonly used electrical connector. If you really clean the base flange of it, I suspect you will see the words "Cannon" on it and a part number. I am unable to ID the lower item, as you don't have a good close up of it. Here in the U.S. one can still buy imported soft drinks from Japan in Codd bottles. I bought a couple just for the bottles. Great finds. I really like the coin and the plaque the best.

Good call on the electrical connector. It appears to be the type that had 16-gauge contacts and was widely used in the WWII era on aircraft, naval, and other military equipment. Can't imagine, though, why it is mounted on wood.
@tuckertomlinson4216

to add a thought, it looks to me like the 'charge 16lbs' on the right may refer to the load of carbide that would have been used in the acetylene gas generator for one of these lights. If correct, that sounds quite large, so either that plaque might have gone with a case of carbide to refill the system several times, or it might have gone to the central canister which would have had gas lines leading off to each fixture in the stately home. THE OLD BYRD FARM VLOG here on youtube has a couple of videos of an in-ground carbide gas generator from an old acetylene lighting system that was installed in a US farm.
@Riptides99
@Riptides99 Жыл бұрын
@@tuckertomlinson4216 I remember reading where there was a short time that these electrical generators were being installed on boats/ships, usually as a retrofit, as it was all such new technology that would give them lights at night.

Not turning off?! I was so excited with you and I was smiling ear to ear that was great fun Nicola! As always you are a joy. That wooden thing must be some sort of hatch to a boat to reach the inner workings. Love the squirrel bit at the end also. Such a fun video overall. Love the maritime pole…in America we say “I wouldn’t touch that with a ten foot pole!”
@gland1830
@gland1830 Жыл бұрын
I MAY be mistaken, but I think the object identified as a barge pole 'punt pole' or 'setting pole', is actually a 'Pike Fork' used to help erect pre-framed walls and scaffolding. It also looks like a defensive pike fork used to push away siege ladders from a wall. It may also be a 'Spar Pike' used aboard ship to help raise and position spars, but this is only a guess. All the 'Barge Poles' I can find have a much blunter end to them. At any rate, just keep Mud Larking and showing us what you and your fellow larkers find. Thank you.

It is extraordinary that the beautiful brass plate you found is so fascinating to us now but back in the day it was as interesting as the sticky label on an Amazon delivery box ! Pipes were the fag ends of today yet with the passage of time we value them so much . One of the greatest joys in life is seeing beauty in ordinary things and realising that everything is special in its own way . I wonder what people will find in a hundred years that we discarded so casually today and frame it and treasure it ......another fantastic video Nicola, thank you.

When you talked about gloves or not gloves, it reminded me of times I've been hit by a strange feeling of gratitude for just how amazing our hands are: they can manipulate and feel in such incredibly detailed and delicate ways, yet they're also tough, really, and can take more use than some give them credit for. I don't care one bit when mine get dirty if it's for good reason. Digging out a complete stoneware bottle from the Thames mud, using your fingers to both dig and feel the texture of the stoneware: those are definitely a good reasons!

That squirrel! 😍 Hope her cunning plan to get to the bird's food was thwarted. And those finds are worth getting excited over. Quite honestly, your videos wouldn't be anywhere as interesting and enjoyable if you clearly didn't love or get excited over finds. Not everything found is going to be that silver and gold some people seem to need to find to be happy. I'm far more interested in the age and attached history to a piece than it's marketable value. You said for us to be ourselves... good advice for you too! Be yourself, allow yourself to get excited over your finds! ❤️

Never apologize for your expressions of excitement,therein lies the thrill,even with the broken off bottle top,we experienced a”Oh MY Goodness” moment. My favorite find in this one,is the Imperial light plaque. Why? It’s beautiful,for one. Number 2,I know you adore Sunflowers,a find that was made ,destined,to reside in your home!

Amazing finds Nicola! I was just thinking that Imperial Light plack would be perfect for the wooden mount and then you said it out loud. I don't blame you for the excitement. Many thanks as always for sharing your adventures with us all. :-)

What amazing finds Nicola. I love the objects you found and your wonderful history lessons. I think the Imperial Light is my favorite but love all of them. I think another saying came from something like your find and it is "I wouldnt touch him with a ten foot pole" just a thought. Until next week! Take care.

Hi Nicola. You make a happy man feel very old! When I was at Junior School I was the "Ink Monitor", and my responsibility was to go around the classroom filling the ink wells from a jug just like yours. I also remember being told, somewhere along the line, that Stephen's Ink had an advertisement on every platform on every railway station in the country. I also had a friend with the name of "Stephen Zinck" who took a lot of leg pulling!

Oh Nicola what a bounty of finds,to watch your excitement is definitely infectious,I wason the edge of my chair till the end.That Stoeware bottle is a real beauty, the glaze makes it look like new .I remember back in my school days using Stephens ink and I also recall that horrible crusty powdered mix that the ink monitor would pour into the individual ink wells.Most desks bore signs of its indelible characteristic. The lasting impression of this vlog though was your wonderful excitement, it must be wonderful to have a hobby that excites you so muc ,I love it . Thanks for this Nicola . Take care happy larking X
