Just a short drive from Hikkaduwa is a small town called Galle. This coastal Sri Lankan town is most well known for the Galle Fort which was a stronghold built by the Portuguese in the 1500's, but is now filled with shops and restaurants for tourists visiting Sri Lanka. Before heading to Galle Fort, we chose to go for a surf lesson with our good friend (and surf instructor) Amila!
We surfed at Dewata Beach in Galle which is a great place for beginner surfers because the bay is well protected from the outside, meaning the waves aren't too intense! And actually WE didn't surf... Mico surfed... I explain why I am not able to surf in the video :) He had an awesome time and did really well!! If you're in need of a surf instructor in the Hikkaduwa/Galle area, send a message to Amila @bananaleaf_surf - he's amazing!
We worked up a serious appetite surfing (and sitting) and accidentally ordered ourselves an incredible Sri Lankan meal for lunch!! Seriously, this lunch was unreal. We must have had about 10 different dishes to share between the two of us. Rice and curry in Sri Lanka is on a whole other level. If we could relive one meal for the rest of our lives, it would probably be this lunch. If you want to try Sri Lankan rice and curry during your time in the country, we definitely recommend Punto Cafe in Galle Fort.
There is also lots of great shopping in Galle, although we didn't have as much luck as we'd hoped we would! So instead we hopped up onto the Fort and climbed around the perimeter, which is something you have to do if you come to Galle! The sights are so beautiful that we even stumbled upon a crew filming something while we were there!
Galle is a great place to spend one day when you are on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. We highly recommend following in our footsteps if you want to have the perfect day in Galle. It's a great place to spend a few relaxing hours before or after a surf lesson and we definitely recommend a visit, especially if you are in nearby Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, or Ahangama.
