He meticulously transformed his Hako into a Hot Wheels legend-an authentic JDM classic that captures the 70s and 80s era of Japanese tuning. The outcome: a 1972 Nissan Skyline 2000GT Hakosuka boasting period-correct features, including a vintage Cartech intercooler, AiResearch turbo, L28 inline-six engine and triple Mikuni Solex carburetors with the first Rocket Bunny body kit in the US rolling on stretched Toyo R888R Proxes and Racing Service Watanabe R-Series wheels. Air Force veteran Roy de Guzman invites Nicole to experience the right-hand-drive manual and its snappy OS Giken racing clutch with a cruise around suburban Las Vegas.

United States Air Force veteran Roy de Guzman was stationed at Yokota Air Base when he acquired his Hakosuka. As a member of Team Wild Cards, Roy frequents JDM car shows and meets around Nevada and Southern California, snatching multiple awards throughout the years and various liveries of his beloved Skyline.

A co-worker of my father's company rode the Kenmeri Skyline, which came out after Hakosuka, and he took me on many rides when I was a kid. My dad drove a Z432 and a Mitsubishi Galant GTO.

I got a story like this when I lived in Japan for 10 years as well with my R34 GT-R VSpec, I was one of the only Wangan Runner that was american in Japan... Getting my car back in July 2025 after waiting since 2011. Max speed 362kph.

Thanks! I wish we could’ve told the whole story! There was actually a 3rd car that pulled up after the Escalade! 4 more guys got out with for a total of 11 walking slowly towards me and my friend Chris who drove me there. It was quite intimidating!

This is my kind of car. This and the 33 (unpopular opinion) are my favorite model skylines. This thing looks so engaging to drive. Exactly my type. The challenge of driving it would never get old. I can just imagine the smell of the exhaust and fuel from the carbs. Takes me back to my teens driving an old dual point d15 ef civic hatch back as my first car. Getting in first thing in the morning, exhaust gas billowing from startup and the smell of how rich they run initially 😋😋

I mean this in the most undramic way. But I appreciate a true car enthusiast so much. It can't be faked. You have that true authenticity or not. That car rips so hard and the gun is a true fan. That stuff can't be faked on film, it's either you have or not. And those Watanabe R's fill me with happiness. I had a 240Z with a Maxima diesel crank running a 3.1 stroker on triple Mikuni 45s

@@kopronko Roy hasn't ever had it dyno'ed but an old Japanese tuner friend of his judged it to be about 200-250 hp, so Roy sorta runs with that assumption! As far as boost, it's happiest when it doesn't go over 10lbs.

This car kinda reminds me of the Datsun 510 only bigger. Back in the 80's when I worked in the automotive gray market. Every now and then we would get a right hand drive something to make legal for use in the U.S.A. And let me tell you it was like learning how to drive all over again. nice to see a guy getting so much enjoyment from his machine, and by extension, being a part of the culture around it. this is spectator stuff only for me, I'm a little too tall for Japanese iron, and most other makes for that matter , since other manufacturers learned from the Japanese cars that they could save about three inches of costly interior space and nobody would notice. I am a firm believer in small and light performance cars, but family cars made into performance cars just seem to me like there wasn't a lot of first choices, even if that is not the reality.

holy moly, among all the bangers you've done, this one ranks VERY close to the top!!! sooo many cool details, so much nuance, and so much japanese flavor. the guy isn't even japanese, but still respected them enough to pay homage to their car culture. this episode could have been twice as long, and it would never have gotten boring. also, i always love it when car owners get surprised by how well you understand their car, and adapt to it. thanks for another great episode!

Well done Nicole! You really nailed it driving Roy's car as I know first hand how difficult it can be driving a car with the steering on the side that your not accustomed too! And that clutch BITE !! Great story about the GTR history. I never thought it went so far back! Roy you are indeed a great instructor from your background and showed a lot of patience and understanding in helping Nicole drive your car. What a treat! I had just finished watching a video about a Renault 5 Turbo on Iain Tyrrell's channel. It was a car I had no interest in but the video made it interesting. Then this was "next in line" and while I've also never had any interest in the Skyline, I thought this was fascinating. Roy, the vehicle you've created is absolutely badass! That motor, the componentry, the love (and incredible attention to detail) you've put into it, absolutely amazing and congrats to Nicole for being the best student on the clutch take-up. Thank you Roy for your service in the USAF and as a weapons instructor.

Friday I shared 3 episodes with my band members. You are a hit!!! One of us just bought a mint Boxer S maybe like yours. I had friends in the '80's LA who raced the little Nissans and Datsuns. Third band member raced 914's on local track in the midwest as a hobby. I was a member of a Mustang/Cobra Autocross Club in '72. I saved NOTACAT for the finale. We are all Dads with very precious and vital daughters. We Teared up right on cue! You now have 3 new fans. I am vicariously rich and will likely be the guy who buys the merch. Hey! I also have a sports clutch. I stall it when I am not concentrated and/or have loud music on. The it drives so sweet when I am on the throttle. Really fast shifts

Way back in about 1983 or so, one of my teachers at school had a Skyline just like this one. I don't remember all the details other than it being a metallic grey colour but I do remember him saying it was fuel injected. This was in the UK when older japanese cars were extremely rare because they had all mostly dissolved by then. I never realised at the time what a special car it was.

Roy - Your Hoko is just epic! This is on my very short list of cars I want to own. The race history of the various and storied Prince/Nissan Skylines is almost unmatched. BMW is often given credit for birthing the first true sports sedan with the 1985 BMW M5 but in reality it may have been Prince with the Skyline GT way back in 1964 that started that ball rolling. And the advent of the C10 Hokosuka just took that concept further... The funny thing is, back in high school in the mid 80's the Japanese styling didn't quite grab me the way it does now. But all these years later the Japanese design from this era has aged so well that it not only isn't confused with anything else but it does so without being weird. The design is both outrageous and reserved at the same time. From 60's Mazda Cosmo's to 70's Toyota Celica's... they all look fantastic especially when seen in the wild. In this video your car looks like a space ship when set against the back drop of big dumb box SUV's and boring "bars of soap" sedans. I am very envious. Thanks for sharing your car with all of us. Nicole has a way of finding some of the coolest? neatest? greatest? (OK, hard to find the right accolade) cars and owners. His story about finding his car just proves he is a true car guy. Roy built was had to be a tuners nightmare, but found a way to make it work. I was curious if Roy ever put his car on a dyno? Great job Roy, you have to be proud of what you ended up with. Nicole, great job taming another beast that was brought your way. I always enjoy the parts of the videos where the owners are finally able to relax and enjoy riding along with her. Smiles all around. That generation Skyline body style is my favorite. And I generally prefer naturally aspirated, but I've got to admit that turbo sounds sick! Beautiful work, Roy! I like this a lot. I wish there were more builds like this featured on channels in general. Its not common, these days, to stand out without giving up some of the restraint that is proper for classics, and the subtlety of japanese classics in general. I see a lot of balls to the wall stuff, especially when you get in to Kai builds or restomods, and its kind of yawn worthy to be honest. the majority of people would look at a chassis like this in good condition, and given the resources go RB, VR, even VK or SR with some near 4 digit horsepower number and a CD009, and if they want to get wild use an engine from another manufacturer like JZ, Rotary, or LS. Its cool to see them on the show floor, but when you look at it like a car, you realize its some burnout machine with skinny tires that takes 100s of gallons of e85 to cruise in. I love seeing people impose practical limits on thier cars to keep them reliable, and modify from that perpsective. Its cool how he isnt doing anything the car shouldnt do, with themals (like rear mount rad and transax), power, or interior. Cars are so much cooler when you can tell someone drives it a lot, and the power is so much more impressive that way. So many people would just take an old RX, or Z and back half it with the cheapest V8 or turbo6 they could find and slam it on some one off dummy barrels. Glad to see classics being used as intended, on the road, eating up the pavement.

Love seeing this, there's a Datsun 2000 Super Six (not! a 'Cedric) with the non-crossflow L20 in the shed out back,.. Once you get the right wheels on this era of Nissan / Datsun cars, you realise that Nissan had some styling work done from European studios - the 2000 Super Six on Alloys looks like classic Pinninfarina sedan design, where the Skyline's look more Ghia. Props to your Drone Camera Op, some of those follow shots look straight out of Need For Speed or Gran Turisimo.
