Module: Needle Thoracentesis
NICU Ed Portal is an innovative new program to complement your education during your NICU rotation. This program is designed for health professionals and trainees and will be used in conjunction with one-on-one teaching by a clinical mentor during your NICU rotation. Individual modules can also be used for self-paced learning. Please refer to the current medical literature for updated information.

Are we not supposed to use the second intercostal space on the involved side between midclavicular line and anterior axillary line to avoid breast tissue? This looks like the needle is going into the midclavicular line.

We are instructed to leave the needle (catheter) in until the Neonatologist evaluates for a chest tube. Is that not the accepted practice?

Do they not numb up the patient first?? I know in adults, they do because it's extremely painful.. obviously, this isn't a human, but if you are prepping for the real deal, should they not practice with the numbing? Even if it's only a verbal step
