I think he was originally planning to play ..Rh8 and captured Bxg2 to prevent g4 defending the knight. However, after ..Rh8 Hans has Nf6 and if ..Rxh4 then Rg8 Ke7 Re8# is mate. Both realized this after Hans captured on g2 and black resigned immediately having lost a piece for nothing.

At the end, if black plays Rh8 (intending to win the piece back), white plays Nf6, and if then black plays Rxh4, white has checkmate with Rg8+ followed by Re8 mate.
