It's really the same "protective" role, I mean she is still your kid sister. It reminds me of families who are orphaned and the oldest sibling becomes the responsible one, almost a surrogate.

I still like the idea of the father nier given we barely have any anime rpgs games where you play as an 40+ year old protagonist than a 20 something year old though given ending E of replicant its probably for the best

Fast forward 11 years and now we have a beautiful remaster.... time flies so fast.... So everyone even if there are things to complain about the remaster just don't. It's a waste time. Just enjoy what games you like because we really have a shorter life than we think.

Congratulations, the remaster is now available. I read the comments with interest. It seemed to me that the plots preferred by the Japanese are different from the plots preferred by many people here. We certainly prefer young protagonists. However... In a story about a father trying to save his daughter, it's a bit unappealing. Even more so when the character is a tough guy. We think of it as his "duty" to do so. But that's not the case with a brother and sister. We would perceive the act more as "self-sacrifice" and "devotion" than as a duty. This is even more true if the sibling is a minor who may still need a guardian. This "self-sacrifice" and "dedication" is also symbolic about Kaine and Emile. Perhaps we surely like tragic stories (but it depends on the individual).

Because it's essentially the same game as the NieR we got, the difference is instead of being a father trying to find a cure for his daughter you play as a young man trying to find a cure for his sister. Honestly, the only reason I could see as to why they made two alternate versions of the characters, but the same game is purely because of the audience. My guess is they probably thought the younger version of the main character could connect better with a younger demographic, so created two versions for Japan. I'm not quite sure which one came first, according to some sources the first NieR trailer featured the father, but I'm also reading some other sources that NieR was made with Westerners in mind. Being that Replicant was mainly aimed at Japan since a lot of JRPGs feature these young looking teens. The one featuring the Father is apparently appeasing older demographics as well as Westerners since at a glance it appears we appreciate more manly type of characters for example, Commander Shepard, Master Chief, Joel(Last of Us), Booker, Duke Nukem and the list goes on. (I know Joel and Booker didn't exist at the release of this game, but they are examples) Basically, NieR was made not just for Japan, but for the world so they catered the hero that was going to be presented world-wide as a manlier protagonist, while Japan got to choose since they appreciate younger characters more.

I wonder why they used "Shadowlord" for the opening in Gestalt but "Song of the Ancients - Fate/Emil - Karma" in Replicant? Though it might make sense that they're referring to the Shadowlord since he is a Gestalt.

Having played both versions with an English patch on the replicant version I can say that Replicant (teen) nier looks cooler but the story flows better and makes more sense with western nier, with him as the father instead of the brother.

I Definitely don't like Nier's younger design before the time skip, But I think it improves afterwards. I just feel like his younger design fits more within the whole thing between Kaine and Nier.

@@Voeris1 Voice acting has more emotion, the OG OST is better, and the facial animation is better. I believe the physics are better, too, everything so far looks super rigid in the remaster/remake which is to be expected I guess.

@PrinceOF9Imagination No; In Japan Near Gestalt (North America's Near) was an xbox exclusive. Near Replicant was made for the ps3 only and I believe its only available in Japan. The only real difference is that the main character is younger.

Yeah there are some differences. The most notable one is the reason why Yonah wants the lunar tear. Nier tells Yonah if you find a lunar tear you become rich and possibly could buy medicine to cure her illness. I guess we'll know if they keep that or not in the localization of the remake

Well you are half right. In JPN they had two version. Nier Replicant and Nier Gestalt. Replicant was the PS3 version and Gestalt was the Xbox 360 version. We ended up with the Western Version.

@StillNeedsFixing Nothing fan-made about a book written by the writers of the game, stories from the writers of the game and the creators of the game saying "yes she is a hermaphrodite". Grimoire Nier is not in the game, it is akin to an Ultimate Guide available in japan with a fan translation available now to read. And again the kids were asking her "Why do you call yourself a girl?" Long before she was ever possessed by Tyrann.

@cosmosofinfinity Well, the Japanese knew that the younger version of Nier would be in favor of their crowd, and that the older tougher looking guy would be in be more in favor of the Americans. Their original plan was to have this game in the young version as an Xbox Exclusive. Xbox - Nier RepliCant PS3 - Nier Gestalt

It's not that it's a big deal, But I feel like this character design is better fitted for the story at hand, Not to mention the combat, It's so fast and the character has so much agility it looks strange with old Nier fighting.

@nnndddnnnddd If you haven't already Wiki'd the info, then I can tell you Nier is Yonah's older brother. As far as I'm aware, there's no story differences other than a younger Nier. It's simply to appeal to Eastern and Western audiences.

This version of nier looks much better, plus it'd make shipping him and Kayne or whatever her name was easier. But I like western niers role as father better (western opening was more enjoyable to)... So I'm a bit torn. I'd be happiest if we had a Papa Nier that didn't look like ass with a random eyepatch.

I think he looks better with eyepatch, honestly. He was pretty butter-face to begin with. The eyepatch covered the brows, which helped, in my opinion.

Didn't mean the eyepatch made it bad, but the fact it was just all of a sudden there. No story about it that i remember. It just came to be, meant more he looked like ass that randomly got a eyepatch.

Was no scar there in alt costumes though so it was kinda... anti-climatic? No worn out armor and or other visual cues so was just a bit of a let down imo.

Jack of Spades I think the patch is suppose to suggest he lost more than just an eye. It's pretty big. Overall, I think both Papa and Brother Nier have cool designs post timeskip. Part 1 Papa was butterface to all hell and Part 1 Brother.... Uh, yeah.

this seems to be the unpopular opinion. but I feel so much more badass, fighting big monsters with a younger character. it just feels so much more exciting, I feel like I could let my mind run will with imagination, long runs with epic camera angles just aren't the same with an old guy.

@LordMurdalot Did you get the B path ending yet and Kaine's backstory? they never explicitly say SUP GOTTA DICK, but the kids in her village were making fun of her and asking things like "Why do you call yourself a girl?" It's pretty clear
