Nietzsche graduated Schulpforta with a dissertation on the topic of Theognis of Megara. Theognis was a Greek aristocrat from a Dorian city-state, famous for his poetry which survives only in fragments. For millennia, he was regarded as a gnomic poet, whose works were intended to impart moral lessons. In his study of Theognis, Nietzsche combats this view, and argues instead that Theognis was only perceived as a moralist in the post-Socratic zeitgeist. What Nietzsche finds instead is a passionate man who wrote poetry at all seasons and occasions of life, and who spoke for an aristocratic ethos that was collapsing during the democratic revolutions of Greece. In this essay, among the earliest works of Nietzsche, we find the beginnings of his own identification with the old social order of Greece, and even his implicit criticisms thereof. Pictured in the art is the two-headed god, Janus.

Excellent lecture. Commentary was excellent as well. I especially liked the Janus faced view of Theognis, his duplicity and resentment once betrayed by his class. Betrayal of one's class, the splitting of allegiances to expand one's power, here we see that the individual who seeks his advantage would also make an enemy of himself to curry favor and get the advantage without resentment - for one does not resent that which maximizes one's power.

I would like to shed some light on Nietzsche's cultural background regarding music and poetry in so far as in the German speaking lands, especially since romanticism had arisen, the connection between poetry and music was very close. And many famous composers took poems and wrote notes for them, which was popular, because it was common to play music instruments and sing together at home or during parties. In German we have a term for it, namely "Kunstlied" "(artful song opposed to Volkslied). This phenomenon is a quite special to German culture, so that the French took the term "Lied" instead of "chanson" to charaterize kind of vocal music

Thank you for creating this video! I think I have listened to this six times in two days! I was aware of his paper on Theognis, but never read it. The work by Bowra "Early Greek Eulogists" has a good chapter on him.

00:27 📜 Nietzsche's dissertation on Theognis of Megara explores the poet's life and work, emphasizing its philological nature. 01:53 🧐 Nietzsche challenges the common perception of Theognis as a moralist and argues that his poems were not intended as moral teachings but expressions of personal feelings. 03:15 📚 Nietzsche uses Theognis's poetry to trace the poet's life, from his aristocratic upbringing to his exile and return, highlighting his bitterness towards democracy. 05:36 🏛 Nietzsche sees Theognis as a representative of Greek master morality, advocating for aristocratic values and opposing democratic ideals. 11:12 🎵 Theognis's poems were meant to be recited with music, emphasizing their lyrical and performative nature. 16:58 🤔 Nietzsche's approach to philology combines scientific analysis with a desire to grasp the broader philosophical and cultural aspects of Theognis's work. 20:01 🏛 Nietzsche discusses the political history of Megara, emphasizing the transition from aristocracy to democracy and Theognis's role in it. 21:37 📚 Nietzsche analyzed the historical context of ancient Greece, focusing on Theogenes and the transition from aristocracy to democracy. 22:19 💡 Nietzsche emphasized the evolving beliefs of mankind, shedding old beliefs for new ones as their minds evolved. 23:31 💰 Nietzsche viewed wealth and luxury as socially destabilizing forces that would lead to the downfall of Greek city-states. 24:54 🏛 Democracy degenerated into "mob rule" as manipulative leaders exploited the system for personal gain. 27:11 📜 Theogenes' poetry reflected his grievances against poverty, character attacks, and betrayal by former friends. 29:13 🗳 Theogenes pretended to have sympathies with the common people but was eventually exposed and had his property seized. 32:25 🏛 The nobles who returned from exile overcame the people in battle and established an oligarchy in Megara. 35:50 🧬 Nietzsche highlighted the ancient perspective of class distinctions as religious and how their dissolution marked a profound societal change. 41:56 ⚖ Nietzsche discussed the rapid decline of ancient religious values and the erosion of class distinctions in the face of material interests. 43:06 🗣 Theogenes expressed contempt for both nobles who compromised class distinctions and the common people, whom he saw as untrustworthy and self-serving. 44:00 📜 Nietzsche's stand-in for the ancient Greek aristocracy is theogenus, who emphasized trustworthiness and true possession of being as noble traits. 45:07 💼 Trustworthiness and honesty, initially associated with the upper class, later became moral duties but were originally seen as inherited or inculcated traits. 46:18 🤥 Deception was adopted as a survival strategy by those who lacked physical force to overcome opposition, leading to a distinction between "bad" (low-born) and "good" (noble) individuals. 50:38 🕊 The nobility believed in their direct connection with the gods, maintaining offerings and sacrifices, which gave them prestige and authority. 55:56 🌟 Theogenous experienced a shift in perspective due to social upheavals, questioning the justice of the gods and viewing everyone as somewhat guilty from a divine perspective. 59:41 🙏 In his later years, theogenous exhibited more liberal views, expressing empathy for the poor and suggesting that wealth and poverty were determined by the whims of the gods. 01:04:17 😡 Theogenous' condemnation of societal changes could be seen as resentment stemming from the reversal of his social status, akin to the development of slave morality. 01:06:10 🤔 Nietzsche's view on the noble culture aimed to re-establish old hierarchies, which he considered less resentful than slave morality. 01:06:37 📜 Nietzsche's dissertation on Theognis suggests criticism towards Theognis' changing convictions due to societal transformation. 01:08:25 🤯 Nietzsche implies that Theognis, like himself, may have become a decadent but differs in choosing to fight against decadence through intellect. 01:09:06 🌍 Nietzsche may have seen himself as occupying a similar historical place as Theognis, both fighting cultural battles against democracy. 01:11:34 🍷 Nietzsche's dissertation shows that Theognis' poems covered various aspects of life, including convivial poems and drinking songs, challenging the idea of them being solely moral teachings. 01:19:08 💡 The misinterpretation of Theognis' work as moral teachings led to the loss of the broader context of his poetry, causing aversion towards him. 01:22:36 📚 Theognis represents a declining aristocracy on the verge of revolution, embodying the tension between past and future, seen as a complex and passionate figure by Nietzsche.

Now people misrepresent Nietzsche, which we cannot dispel the notion of, thanks to people who don’t understand metaphor properly or people of intellectual stature, in general.

FN was a short sighted politician, and try as one might to see him in a favorable light, he at last view a major sophist. His work is well suited to rest in a dust bin of folly. FN is neither a good or noble man. Follow him at your peril. The fates await.

He is proudly a Sophist. The Sophists were the true philosophers of Ancient Greece. Your definition of a good or noble man, does that definition include complaining in the youtube comments section?

Aristotle says to entertain ideas and not accept them. I assume no one here is saying we should revive the Greek Aristocratic political and belief system. Even if I could be a preacher with my name. Nietzsche is highly relevant to know for philosophy teachers who stop at ''they killed Socrates because he was corrupting the youth''. In my head, Nietzsche was a troll before the arrival of the internet, but he was not lying. He was representing a certain mindset that is misrepresented and misunderstood.
