I've cruised on her sister ship Koningsdam as well as Nieuw Amsterdam and Zuiderdam. One detail I appreciate is how they have days of the week on the rug in the elevators which the staff change daily. Most of all, I love Holland America Line food. Club Orange is well worth it too but it's included in Neptune and Pinnacle suites.

You sold me! 🤣 I’m going to start doing some research on taking a HAL cruise soon. Every menu looked delicious (especially Tamarind), and the entertainment looked wonderful. We’ve been on 6-7 Hal cruises but not for 7-8 years. We are ready! Thanks for posting this tour of what appears to be a very elegant ship. 😊

You did a great job with this tour! I will be on the Rotterdam next month. This will be our first Holland experience! We have been on alot of Carnival cruises. We are excited to try something new.

Thank for the detailed tour and food videos. I’m looking at a couple of cruises on this ship in Europe for 2024. How do you think it compares to cruises you have been on with Royal?

Thanks for the question! Holland America is going to have better food quality overall, though they do have shorter operating hours at the buffet. Royal Caribbean will likely have more activities if it's one of the big ships (Oasis or Quantum-class). But on a newer HAL ship like the Nieuw Statendam there is more live music.

Thanks for the great video! There aren’t many new videos of this ship, so it is really appreciated. I am considering this ship and cruise line because it seems more refined and adult-oriented…rather than family/child or rowdy party atmosphere. Did you find that to be true?

It is certainly more refined & adult-oriented, and not as many children on board. Though on holiday cruises there could be a lot of kids too, but HAL is usually calmer and less party-like atmosphere vs Carnival or the Norwegian big ships. Thanks for the comment & question! 🙂

Outstanding video photography quality. However, the editing "cuts" between scenes were much too quick, especially food; could not "take in" the visual dish AND the description before a cut to the next dish.

Thanks much for the in depth video! Well done! We are doing a two week Caribbean cruise on the Statemdam in early December. All looks nice. We have a verandah room on deck 7. Was this a holiday cruise, and is that why there was the wrapped gift packages display in the center of the ship? Sounds like you enjoyed the food, yes? Was a coat and tie required in the MDR on formal nights? Thanks!

Our pleasure! 😊 This was after the holidays, during the New Years, so there were remnants of the Christmas décor, so I think those giant gift boxes are temporary. The food was fantastic like our previous HAL cruises. You do not need a coat and tie on formal night, though many do wear them. Thanks for the comment & questions! 🙂

It seems that there are items in the buffet that overlap with the main dining room for dinner in some nights. For the same items, are the qualities same? I am getting mixed review with food in HA. Someday it is excellent and others say it is just ok. What is your opinion of HA regarding the buffet and main dining room compared to other premium cruise lines such as Celebrity or Norwegian? I didn’t include Princess cuz I heard their main dining room is subpar. We are going on Koningsdam in November to Mexico so your feedback in this cruise line will be greatly appreciated.

I'd say the quality are pretty similar in the MDR & the buffet, but you'll find certain dishes available only to one or the other venue. I'd say HAL has an excellent buffet just like Celebrity. Norwegian newer ships can have a better selection but the quality isn't as good as HAL or Celebrity. Overall the quality of HAL's included food is right up there with Celebrity. I think you picked a good one in the Koningsdam- have a great time!

The included food was already really good actually. We have tried Tamarind before on another HAL cruise and highly recommend it.

That's not true! They're really not that different than other cruise lines. You can get some really good prices sometimes for HAL too!

Rubbish! As long as you have good manners, dress in a half decent way and respect your fellow passengers and wait staff, you’ll be fine! Didn’t you see the way some of those passengers were dressed? I’m sure you could do better than that; you obviously care.

Actually most of the food shown in the video are complimentary (buffet, main dining room, dive-in cafe, NY pizza & deli & more) unless specifically noted otherwise.

It's actually drinks packages 🙂. It's how you pay a certain amount of money daily which includes many alcohol drinks, soda, juices, etc.
