That's not really how our attitude to refugees works. We are open for refugees because they are people in desperate need, and because after the war help for refugees was a part of the new world order. I don't think we expect refugees to 'contribute' (immigration policy more generally is a different story, where we do have points and so on). By all means vote for parties that want to change this, if you want. Moreover I don't think the Australian approach works, and couldn't be used by us (although Farage likes several of the Australian systems. It used to have a reputation as being quite a racist country)

@@patking754The system was controversial throughout its life, and only 'works' if you basically don't want an asylum system. Being 'cruel' would probably deter the boats, but that's probably not a solution open for us.

@ChrisTheMoiler
@ChrisTheMoiler 3 жыл бұрын
There is no rule requiring refugees to claim in the first safe country in which they arrive. Neither the 1951 Refugee Convention nor EU law requires a refugee to claim asylum in one country rather than another. The EU does run a system - called the Dublin Regulations - which allows one EU country to require another to accept responsibility for an asylum claim where certain conditions apply. The relevant conditions include that the person is shown to have previously entered that other EU country or made a claim there. This is supposed to share responsibility for asylum claims more equitably among EU countries and discourage people moving on from one EU country to another. But it doesn’t work. It is clear the system greatly benefits countries like the UK and is very unfair to countries like Greece and Italy. That’s part of the reason Germany has just suspended the Dublin Regulations when dealing with people fleeing from Syria.

@simonmason8582
@simonmason8582 3 жыл бұрын
@Tanya Greene Who knows? The Channel migrants are not illegal though. Check the treaty you signed in 1951. The UN drew up international laws on this after the Second World War. The 1951 Refugee Convention protects people fleeing persecution and trauma. It describes an asylum seeker as someone who is outside the country of their nationality “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion” and “is unable to, or owing to such fear is unwilling to, avail himself of the protection of that country”. So it’s completely legal, under these circumstances, to escape and find safety elsewhere. Once you’ve claimed asylum in another country, you will need to wait while the government looks at your case. Those who have successfully claimed asylum are known as refugees.

AS far as online debates about this situation go... I see ultra-extreme irresponsible lefty nuts claiming anyone and everyone can come without consequence. I don't think there could be anything quite so stupid as this type of declaration... and on the other side we have MIGRANTS :) who came from those places in question, who established lives here LEGALLY warning us about dangerous people trying to come from where they originated from... I refuse to believe people like this Steve guy are real/genuine because of just how little they seem to CARE about all those will suffer from promoting such free movement... I've lived in Manchester before, and met a lot of people new to UK who ended up living on the streets. Almost every single day of my time in that city, these guys would come into shops / starbucks etc, take food off the counter and walk out again. I'd ask the staff are you going to do anything??? and they'd shrug saying "If we did anything or tried to handle them ourselves, we could be in trouble for assault. Mind blown... I remember wanting to pursue one of these thieves myself, but couldn't leave my laptop on the cafe table. How do I know they were new migrants to the country? Well I'm quite a friendly person :) and can speak to anyone, so on a few occasions the topic led to "So where are you from?" and that's when these stories trickled down to boats from .... trying to find a better life. These people who do manage to get into the country, from experience... end up with no help, no support and living a life of crime, due to the irresponsible nonsense spewed by folk like Steve in this video. It's all about virtue signalling, "LOOK AT ME with my great big caring heart helping people get into the country"......... But after that point when you get your little chufty badge, it doesn't really matter to old Stevie boy where or what they get up too does it. Job done as far as he's concerned, but unfortunately it's a lot more complex than his little simple mind.

It’s just absolute lunacy. Why are we even debating about whether illegal immigration is acceptable or not? We should be sending back anyone who tries to enter illegally and determining for ourselves who comes in - i.e. the real refugees who’ve had their homes destroyed, the hard workers who have something to offer, people who want to contribute to society. NOT those that want a free ride and expect everything to be given to them on a silver plate by the taxpayer.

This is the working of the refugee system, which, as another post states, the UK is not exceptionally affected by even in Europe, or EU, let alone the world. We live in a world where people are more prepared than ever to leave their troubles and move to Europe. The UK has legal and moral obligations. Any refugee can seek asylum in this country as I understand it. I'm pretty sure the 'establishment' is not woke. These are obligations that have been in place for years, and the UK is pretty good at working with France to manage the problem and keep people on the continent if possible.

@@alexd9000 Alex, I'm not to keen on Mr. Farage. He has quite a good following amid a certain rather right wing low level of society but I think that now he is what our American cousins would call, "a busted flush." Illegal immigration is an awful problem. But I feel that Farage is just jumping on a popularist bandwagon, that he really doesn't care. It seems he now does anything to keep himself in the limelight as he realises that he is totally unelectable to the UK parliament, (he's tried SEVEN TIMES). But to get back to the question, I have no idea what to do about migration.

@@Ystadcop Nigel Farage is certainly not jumping on the band wagon. He is the band wagon and only one who is exposing the migrant crisis. The government turning a blind eye to this and to sorting it out. The PM and Priti Patel are useless. Nigel by his exposure makes the establishment squirm and that is a good thing. I hope he gets the credit he deserves.
