The worst part about it is that Tyra was underage when she started modeling in Paris. I think she was the majority of the time. I really feel awful for teen Tyra who needed more protecting. The fact that she normalized her trauma and uses it as justification to ask for something similar from models is dark.

The fact that Danielle didn't say anything* while Tyra was giving her the "you're still in this competition" speech just strikes me as so... gross? I think gross. Like they're criticizing the way she speaks, her accent, all of that, and I feel like this was the moment where it maybe broke her. That no matter what she did or said, they'd think she was this "dumb hick" because of her accent and not take her seriously. And it's obvious, when you listen to her words and not just her accent, that Danielle is very intelligent and empathetic and could connect really well with a lot of different people. *Or anything she said was edited out, in which case I think a lot of my read of the situation doesn't apply lol

Tyra brought up assault on the Paris subway as if its totally normal because she let Adrianne (sp?) got assaulted on the go sees in season 1. She's gotta make it seem normal so she can sleep at night.

Thank you for pointing out the assault part, when I was younger and traveled I got groped while getting off a train by a stranger and it was traumatic. People should not make light of assault..no matter how seemingly small

I actually had a positive feeling when Danielle expressed herself in a way that reflects her background. I think Danielle showed a lot of strength in her season, like with they pushed her to close her gap. Not everyone can mask their background, nor should they have to.

Remember Adrianne from the first cycle and she was literally assaulted on camera, and nobody even brought that up. Tyra's actual critical thinking is "If I went through it, you can handle it." 🙄

One thing I'll say about this cycle is that it definitely had the strongest and most memorable competitors. All the girls were so talented and props to them for succeeding through this chaos. 😂

I swear that part of me thinks every photographer and fashion director hated Tyra Banks so they put her through the most terrible stuff, and she just thinks that is how the entire industry operates. Also bless Danielle for understanding the gravity of what happened in Phuket.

Tyra's casual mention of being SAd on the subway was the mindset of such things at that time. As women we juat accepted that those kinds of things were going to happen, it was unfortunately normalized.

It was a swimsuit client, you can't exactly model the swimsuit in front of a temple or anything else like that without being wholly disrespectful of the culture. I see where you're coming from and totally agree that they didn't do my ocean justice. (I'm Thai and was born on an island not too far from where they did this photoshoot.) But if you think you can show skins in temples, let alone doing swimwear photoshoots, honey, you're dead wrong! 😂 (You're Muslim, right? Me too. Think about it as we go to the mosque. Same rule.)

I will defend Tyra slightly here & on the basis of Covergirl at this time. Covergirl as well as many other makeup brands were not quick to hire & cast people who did not have that Newscaster type of voice. The exception was if you were British. They have since revamped & have included all accents into their brand. There have only been around 13 Black women who have gotten exclusive covergirl contracts & a few of them come from winning this show, Eva, Danielle, & Teyona. Queen Latifah & Rihanna are the most notable women who have received covergirl contracts, but then they were already celebrities. *With all that being said, that does NOT excuse the treatment of Danielle on this show when it came to her speech & accent. They casted her knowing she's a Black woman from the South with that type of accent. And it would have been amazing for Tyra to defend her & say, yeah we know you don't have the typical Covergirl voice, but the public is going to learn to like it because you are a Covergirl & you are beautiful & what different beauty is about. Tyra had that power at this time to do that.

Seems like they didn't really care of Danielle's accent but used this just for drama. I mean, in real world who ever cared of any model having accent? Especially when plenty of models (even the most successful ones) are foreigners and they have heavy accent: Adriana Lima, Natalya Vodyanova, etc. The judges always try to find anything to blame girls for (age, height, weight, teeth, accent) and that's so bad.

While I agree that more distinctive features of Thailand would have looked nicer (though I feel swimsuits at a temple would be disrespectful), it was about the swimsuits, not the country, right? So them not making a big deal about Thailand makes sense to me, even though it's a long way to go for relatively simple surroundings, it's what the client asked for. It's not about showing off the country or be super editorial or artsy in these ones, even if it makes them somewhat less interesting.

I understand that you want to see images that make this photo discernibly set in Thailand (like temples) but much of Thai tourism is centred around beach holidays and the tsunami had occurred the year before, which significantly impacted the tourist trade. I think the beach setting is both impactful and appropriate (plus you wouldn’t do a bikini shoot at a temple).

I wonder if Tyra complained about her potential SA while she was in Paris to the modelling agencies and they were like “meh.” And maybe that’s why her mom started showing up to take care of her…. Also that’s why she reacted the way she did to Adrienne. Because she thought that’s how people should react because that’s how they reacted to her. There’s my conspiracy theory.

Danielle in this episode eloquently put into words how the water made her feel. She isn't dumb, she has accent because of where she is from. I live in the South but as the child of immigrants my accent is different than the Southern accent, but I have grown up around it my whole life. Very intelligent people I know have a thick Southern accent. I think it's quite charming but I do understand the stereotype of Southerners being dumb.

Although I understand a wish to see sights of Thailand, the focus of the photoshoot was on nature for a reason. 2 yeas before the season there was a tragic tsunami on those beaches they were shooting at, Jay told about it before the shoot. To me, it's seen on Sara's and Joanne's photos, to some extend in Jade's too with its gloomy-ish dark-ish horizon.

The reason they couldn’t take pictures at temples is because it is not allowed. You have to be covered, no bare arms, no legs showing, cleavage, etc. they are very strict because the temples are considered very sacred. They most definitely would not have allowed them to dress in bikinis at the temples. I had a covered up shirt and shorts almost to my knee and they still gave me a wrap skirt to cover up my legs… my husband had to wear a wrap over his arms and shoulders because he wore a sleeveless shirt - this was in 2017

Sometimes I feel ashamed that as a gay kid growing up I really had a crush on Nigel and now Mr. OR Ms J are my type. Not even episodes like this can save Nigel for me, ever.

She has such a thick accent when she speaks the language of her own country (because she grew up with two Dutch languages), and she still gets booked for all kinds of things. She played a role in a Dutch film, and they spend so much time trying to get her to pronounce her own language with the ''right'' accent... Still nobody stings any less of her.

I was just cleaning the house, and just had on this season. Phuket was completely destroyed by a Tsunami a year before, and they thought it would be a good location for being Ghoilish? Must have gotten a big discount. And the water is beautiful there, but it’s so rough, everything looks muddy. So Tyra tells them how to model for swimsuits, after they already modeled in swimsuits?! I used to wear Op clothes in the mid 80s. Thanks for believing in me…yawn. And maybe if they wanted Danielle to speak clearer, they could have brought in an acting coach, for all the ladies. Tyra is such a phoney baloney.

You can watch asia’s next top model. Photos are great there. Dramas were mostly caused by the models. Host and photographers actually guides the models.
