I used to race karts at Mr Mansell's track in Devon. I'll never forget my first proper race weekend; During the last novice practice session he came out in his kart & spent at least half a lap with each novice, showing them how it's done. I'll never forget him outbraking me into the first turn like I was stood still, before tapping his lid (yes, he had the same design for his kart helmet) as a follow-me gesture. And I instantly gained 4 tenths just by copying his braking and turn in points. To share the same piece of track with my boyhood hero is something I'll never forget. Nigel is the real deal.

I used to think he was boring till he came in a restaurant I was working at (1994 ish) and he was the most lovely guy. Can not praise him high enough. He did not act the 'big I am' at all, but made every one in the restaurant, all the staff and all the other guests, feel like a million dollars. He was just kind, decent, modest, cool, thoughtful and just very, very awesome. Oh, and did I say funny, because he puta laugh or grin on everyone's face that night. Proper legend.

@@johnmartinez7440 ...but, not when comparing like for like and Hamilton's fast lap 1.42.9 put F1 into perspective... the Stig who beat Nigel's time was the original...but imagine if they were given the Suzuki and were asked to race around Spa....It's absurd to compare a driver who had done literally thousands of laps on a short track in a car that he drives probably every week up against someone that's done 3 in a car he's never even seen. I would imagine that the Stig was rather embarrassed and humbled by the F1 drivers who walked into his house and put their feet up...

@@johnmartinez7440 ...the Stig that beat Nigel's time was the second who'd done thousands of laps of the short track in hundreds of cars.....The first Stig could only manage 1.46.1. Stig 2 turned in dozens of laps to beat Nigel's time on a day of his choice with suitable weather. I suspect that if Stig 2 was tested after 3 laps on his first day on the track, he wouldn't even have beaten the celeb's fast lap time....

Eugenio C and how is Senna 'The Driver' morons like you really harp..in todays F1 if Senna drove he would be black flagged every race...1. Senna was a sore loser look what he did to Prost-Ferrari in Japan..2. He weaved under braking countless times just look at his battle with Mansell at Monaco. Senna was a good driver special only in wet conditions but never a fair sportsman
@taliamason7986
@taliamason7986 6 жыл бұрын
Sonu03785 Hardly any Driver was a sportsman in those days. Its was all about doing whatever it took to win even if it did mean deliberately cutting off your team mates on the corners. Prost also did it to Senna when they were teammates at McLaren and vice-versa and Nikki Lauda did it to James Hunt and vice-versa. So by that logic almost no Champion let alone multiple World Championship Driver pre-Schumacher would win in today's F1.

He should have had 2 more world titles but had that infamous tyre blow out when well in the lead of the Australian GP in 1986 and had the car cut out on him at the Canadian GP with only half a lap to go and a 70 second lead a problem with the Ranualt engine dropping revs and cutting out, if he had hung on to win that race he would have been world champion then as well.

Alejandro Tum Nope, just the most memorable. Statistically speaking, other drivers performed better than Senna, maybe because they got the chance to have a longer career, maybe not. The point is though, Senna put on a better show every race, he wasn't a boring driver, and people genuinely liked him for his talents on the track, and his care off the track. As for my favourite, I'm a Jim Clark person, maybe because classic Lotus F1 cars are just the most attractive things ever.

I cannot recommend Nigel's autobiography enough. Nigel and Mrs Mansell were technically homeless as they slept in a transit van to fund Nigel's racing career and this was before he had sat in an F1 car. The sacrifices and setbacks suffered by them would have destroyed any normal couple, but they just picked themselves up and brushed themselves off after every kick in the guts. Despite Nigels reputation for being boring, it is easily the best sporting autobiography I have ever read. Do yourself a favour and read it.

@@fabiometta1034 I thought about now but Mercedes has one the last 7 constructors championships, Lewis Hamilton is second on the all time win list, and Ferrari hasn't sniffed a drivers or constructors championships since 2008, and there is no Williams at Williams I'm going to wait it out a bit longer.

Love the Nige, hands down the fastest man ever to drive a F! car on his best days. Ultra aggressive bravery while retaining complete control on the edge like no other. But sadly Nigel also had numbers of bad days as well, too many.

I’m a massive Mansell fan, but I think your assessment is on the money; Mansell could often be bested by Senna, who was constantly “on it”, and Prost, who was always thinking of the very single way of going faster, smoothly. Senna and Prost were the very best. That Mansell can be spoke of in the same sentence as them tells you he was aaalmost up there with them. No shame in that whatsoever, and it probably marks him out as one of the top five of all time. Given his CART and BTCC exploits though, I’ll always see Mansell as the most “complete” driver, in all categories, up there with Clark and Stewart, if just a shade behind the absolute best in F1.
