The West African bloc ECOWAS has warned the region faced “disintegration” after the military rulers of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso quit the regional grouping and formed a breakaway union. The three countries formed a “Confederation of Sahel States” at a meeting on the eve of the Economic Community of West African States leaders’ summit. Niger's military leader said the country's people have irrevocably turned their backs on ECOWAS. ECOWAS is reeling with sweeping Islamist violence, financial trouble, and challenges mustering a regional force. Junta-led Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have turned to Russia to counter the regional challenges.

If the going away of only 3 countries from the Sahel Region could trigger ECOWAS disintegration then definitely there is some problems with how ECOWAS is going about its politics--political and economic wise. We know that when Britain refuses to join the EU there is no disintegration of the EU. ECOWAS should now come out with an agenda that includes the fearless and relevant politics of the 3 Sahel countries. This can, with time influence the 3 countries to come back to the ECOWAS. No brute force should be used to destabilize the sub-region with unintended serious consequences. EU does not use any brute force to cause Britain to join the EU. If the present leaders do not analyse critically the wind of change taking place in Africa and they take hasty actions the consequences would be very grave. A word to the wise is enough. The 21st century is for Africa. How do we understand this statement? Do we the older people think the youth would accept the dragging of our feet this time round?

ECOWAS is not the only vehicle for integration and unity in West Africa. In fact it is the greatest hindrance to West African Unity because it's processes are conducted and choir mastered by people who don't have the interests of West Africans at heart. Endless summits and talks on integration but no real frameworks and steps taken to achieve such objective. What have they been doing since 1975? If not just being puppeteered by foreign powers. The AES is Africa's biggest hope. It must be supported or else the price for it's failure will be astronomical for generations of Africa's youths and populations.
