Nigeria's Japa Syndrome: Gen-Z and Millennials Escape the Country For Better Life | Firstpost Africa
Tens of thousands of young Nigerians are following a popular trend to leave the country. It’s a trend known by the Yoruba word “japa” meaning “to escape." Japa is becoming increasingly popular with Gen Z and millennials. Nigerians are choosing to flee the country in search of better opportunities amid unemployment, poor governance, lack of infrastructure, and corruption in the country. Among the popular japa destinations are UK, U.S., and Canada. But the trend is negatively affecting Nigeria's economy, leading to a severe brain drain. The japa trend has specifically hit Nigeria's Medical industry and has left an already overloaded healthcare system struggling.

Stay in Nigeria and build your country. Kenyan youths are leading protests against their government, but as former president Buhari called them, LAZY NIGERIAN YOUTHS who don't want to contribute to the country and want to share oil money. All the country they are running to legally and illegally build their own country through sweat and blood. Nothing is automatically easy. Instead of holding your government accountable. They won't listen or understand the importance of staying back and fighting for their country. Someone said EndSARS, you are just looking for the required conviction for your cowardice. Some of you, still hate Igbos for wanting Nigeria broken up , like the country is working for anyone. The Japa phenomenon favours the West that is why they are allowing it - assuming they cared and refused entry of Nigerians into their countries, this won't even be a topic. The myopic ones do not understand the meaning and danger of "Brain drain", so , I will just keep quiet.. For the person who said .... a system that helps me .. rest, some smart individuals built their system to what it is and many countries built theirs on tears, blood and iron.

I hate when people from functional democracies say "stay and fix your country." It's so moronic😡. In our countries, fear is your friend. If you want to be a hero, you will die very fast and your heroics will be an example to anyone who wants to do the same. where I'm from, we have activists languishing in prison or dissolving in acid (and this is not a joke). What can you fix when the people that rule are brutal and corrupt. The UN has and always will be toothless, people will take a knee and protest for a junkie named George Floyd but will totally ignore the brutality that ensues in the land we are fleeing from, thereby giving brutal regimes tacit go-ahead to crush decent with impunity.

All these people complaining about people leaving the country don't really understand. When your country is not being there for you as citizens, you tend to make it better for yourself. Even if it's traveling elsewhere to achieve that. Don't tell Nigerian youths about fixing their country because they have made significant efforts but all to no avail. The ENDSARS protest and the Obidients movement were typical moves to start something new and positive in the country but all those efforts did not end well. The powers that are holding the country are so evil minded and mean. And the real issue is the country is highly divided by tribalism and religious sentiments. So it's really difficult to achieve anything when divided and those elites are very much aware of this and they always use it as tool to their advantage. Disintegration is the key.

Again, Nigeria is the most tribalized country on earth. Most, not not all Yoruba will prefer Nigeria is destroyed under Tinubu, who was kicked out for bad governance because he is Yoruba. Tribalism is the least of your problems when you don’t even have empathy for your fellow igbo people. The Nigerian diasporas gdp is around 800 billion dollars. Why don’t people Just bypass tribalism and do good for their village people? @andrewobi2708 Well said. But the other commentator is not wrong too, since those very same reasons for migration around the world- unemployment, corruption, crime and high tax have been instrumental in educated Indians to leave India. As an African American, I’ve noticed that many Gen Z Nigerians seem heavily influenced by American, UK, and Canadian cultures, which is understandable. However, this raises the question of how it helps build a modern Nigeria, especially with widespread corruption and a lack of willingness among the youth to make sacrifices for progress. Shoutout to my Kenyan brothers and sisters for demonstrating how to do it right. It’s easy to move to the West, but tackling long-standing issues is much harder. Having worked in both countries, I can say that both Kenyans and Nigerians are incredibly talented. However, Kenyans often let their actions speak for them. They are committed to building a modern Kenya and are prepared to fight for their rights and progress. If you check American history and UK history, their is death and destruction everywhere, nothing is ever giving for free.

This "trend" is actually not new. It started with our academics in the late 1980s when the then military government of Ibrahim Babangida introduced an economic system called "SAP" ( Structural Adjustments Program ). I am the son of a first generation Nigerian Professor from Nigeria's premier university. My father's generation of academics felt at that time that the country's policies did not encourage research and their "take home pay could not take them home" and explored better opportunities I'm the academia in better equipped universities in Europe and America. Those in the medical field and it feeder services added exploring the oil rich Middle East countries of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Some Australia. But their movements was never to relocate permanently. Hoping the countries policies would improve so that they could come back home but it seems another generation is still suffering from the same problem...but in a different way. Maybe until truly progressive leadership emerges..or the policies start affecting the common man visibly in this democratic dispensation

The situation in Nigeria is more dangerous and complicated than Kenya, do stop comparing. For example,, South Koreans can protest anything with minimal to no loss of lives or properties, but the slightest attempt to protest in North Korea is a death sentence. Does that mean S. Koreans are braver than the N. Koreans? Secondly, many Russians want to protest against Ukraine war but they can't do so due to jail time and possible loss of life. But people can freely protest in Western Europe. Does that mean Russia is no longer the Giant of Europe? You all fail to understand that an average protester in Nigeria has a 50% chance of returning home alive. The Nigerian government is far more brutal than Kenya's.

Nigeria is irreparable right now, the passed and current leaders who recycle themselves in government have no serious tangible agenda for the development of our nation ( It is the government that fix, build country bcz they enormous resources at their disposal). The country wealth is highly mismanaged and huge gap between rich and poor, old and young people exist i.e average graduates of Nigeria university will be poor because of lack of creative employments for them unlike in the pass a high school cert get better employment. Government lack good initiatives, implementation of good ideas plus corruption and bad system of governance to enrich the few of them leaving the country bankrupt is the driving force for Japa. Nigeria's situation is totally different than Kenya's. Unlike In Kenya, there's a dedicated divide along religious and tribal lines, such that a protest may be seen as an attack on one side, and it can easily spiral out of control into tribal or religious war. So it's hard for the entire country to protest with a common goal. Another thing is that our government in Nigeria is brutal unlike the more lenient Kenya's government, and a protester has a 50% chance of getting killed or jailed. Protesters in Nigeria usually have to face crackdown by the ferocious soldiers, not even the police..
Is "Japa" the solution to Nigeria's economic struggles?
