In 30 years, Nigeria is set to become the third-most populous country in the world, with 400 million inhabitants. Like in other parts, some Nigerians think that family planning is a thing of the west, and no African out to adhere to it. But some experts say this rapid growth is a ticking bomb. Our reporter Edith Kimani meets young people looking for solutions. Are you pro or against family planning? We welcome your views on this topical issue in our comments section below.

Irresponsible parents. These parents haven’t owned up to their responsibility to train their kids. Biko, who is this government that is supposed to train your children? Are Government funds not from collected taxes? Very irresponsible. They keep calling Allah’s name? Why? Take responsibility for your actions. More fundamentally, why should you take money from the private sector to train children? These socialist ideas have led us to ruin. Many southern families are now having 2-4 children.

What are resources? I challenge you to tell me what these “resources” are? Taxes? Oil proceeds? Solid minerals? I would like the Government to review the payscale and benefits for the civil service and elected officials. Perhaps parents marry their daughters off so there is are less mouths to feed. These parents don’t take any pride in their children.

@J Audrey wrong.. if this was the case, please explain why there are so many wars in Africa, between Christianity and Islam.. why there is so much friction in all countries between Christianity and Islam... also why the poorest and most desperate people in the World, are the ones who are the most religious.. so where is your evidence... ??? But then religion is the invention of humans... so in that respect those humans who cannot see the nonsense religion is, are humans with problems.. are you one of them ?

@J Audrey then you might like to think, why is it that people in the most religious countries are desperate to get out to more non religious countries where they cause turmoil in those countries, which is why there is a rising tide of resentment against these religious nutters.. and then I could ask, since you think you know so much, do you have the slightest idea of the history of religion and mythology.. I can't say I am holding my breath as the normal hypocritical aspect of people like you, is that you throw a few words out and then run, as you are incapable of debating your position.. and I thought I would put this in now, as I can't be bothered to waste my time posting again when you fail to make an intelligent response.. but I am very happy to be proved wrong..

Nigerians need to change their mindsets immediately, this issue has reached critical levels and it's mind boggling to me that inspite of the glaring challenges over population will bring about, people still lay so much emphasis on child bearing,it doesn't cease to amaze me that people can't on their own look at the situation and decide to have one or two children at the most for the time being until the population issue is in check. We need an intervention and we need it now,our beliefs are creating situations that are not sustainable, keep culture and religious beliefs aside and become practical because having kids you can't take care of and who will just be frustrated in so many different ways when they grow up is ridiculous.

You don’t know northern Nigeria. It is the basement of hard core Islamic fanatics. The Emir of Kano who is highly educated tried to educate them to embrace education and forward-thinking values but they ganged up against him. They created a lot of problems for him and the man was thus silenced. As things are today, Kano State government still routinely organizes mass wedding - an even that brings many women together en-mass for men to shop, compare and buy. Think about that. That’s why those of us in the south want a secession from the north. We don’t share the same values!

I am pro family planning. I have a big issue with Africans having a mindset of giving birth to children for the government to train (That is so 1960). Like one of the contributors said, we should start taking responsibility for the education of our children as well as the living condition of our families. Taking responsibility will help them to live above religious sentiments and do what needs to be done. Also, It’s high time the society stopped limiting the significance of wives to just pleasing their husbands and birthing children even to their own detriment . The dreams of a woman are still valid even in marriage ; FYI taking care of children is a full time job and a whole lot will have to be sacrificed to take care of many children.

Africa is the most resource-rich continent in the world, but the people are the poorest in the world. I am a father myself. I raised 5 children, part of the time I was a single father, my children were close to my heart, I only went to 4th grade, if a father can't earn enough money to support his family, he shouldn't force his wife to have children if the child is not getting enough to eat and is malnourished, their brain cannot develop properly and the child is unlikely to do well in school. The child cannot become a businessman, then the situation in the country will never get better.

Nigeria is NOT YET over-populated, but with the population boom seen since year 2000, where 60million children were added, there is a chance in 2040, the population would be 400 million. Parents ought to take charge and raise their kids properly, it doesn't always have to be western education and govt help. Basic morals, parents being role models of working ethics(be it farming, shoe making, keeping guard, bricklayer, barber, trader etc) will help their kids to be a blessing to their community. The problem is parents do not want to accept their responsibilities. Family units make up a nation, if they are not in order, you get a country like Nigeria. All the corrupt politicians are also family units, were they raised by their parents properly or taught to go fastlane and hammer by hook or crook?

To be honest the presenter came across as biased in some instances, the conversation was supposed to be a debate so normally there will be people supporting a motion and the others opposing it, instead she tried to push her opinions on those that opposed the motion. People need to understand that the problem is not religion, it is the people. Islam is straight forward, direct and logical, it allows you to marry and and give birth “ONLY” if you can take responsibility of the household, this is the Islamic teaching. The problem is we have a lot of people who who try to justify ignorance and lack of education by misinterpreting the Islamic teachings to suite their desires to reproduce in large numbers for their selfish reasons. If you analyze this situation, you’ll find out that this problem is most prevalent among ignorant and illiterate people who have a distorted understanding of the purpose of reproduction, you rarely see a middle or upper class educated and Islamic household giving birth to a lot of children that they cannot cater for. I may not have the numbers to back my claims, but anybody living in the Northern part of Nigeria can understand my point. It is reasonable to deduce that the population boom in Northern Nigeria is as a result of poverty, ignorance and lack of education in rural areas, therefore it is of utmost significance that we address the issues of orientation or mentality as stated by Khalifa one of the speakers and also the topic of adequate education both religious and general.

The issue is how does the country cater for the population. Solve the corruption problems and people will manage themselves automatically. Free education, free healthcare, improve agriculture, create employment and entrepreneurship. The government cannot force birth control on people. The culture will not allow it. As long as people see children as their retirement plan, nothing will change. Population control is population time bomb in the future. Look at Europe with the baby boomers retiring and look at China and Japan. They now rely on immigration to cater for their older generation. Japan is a dying nation. And China has realized the time bomb coming for them and they have reversed their one child policy, but the damage is already done. Africa should not look outside our culture to solve the problem. Africa is blessed in so many ways. Our resources should be made available to the people and care for all our children.

The problem is the countries that surround Nigeria. They are very poor and the people feel like Nigeria can fix their own problem. But it can't. Nigeria doesn't really have the infrastructure to help people on the bottom. That is why the people on the bottom find themselves in worst shape than where they come from. Greetings and peace be to all. I never, never imagine that a street debate in northern Nigeria could be as instructive and intelligence-imparting as this one. I sincerely thank all of you who actively or passively participated in this debate. The problem we're facing in Nigeria isn't about over population. Population is a force to be reckoned with if well channeled After all, pay attention, after all, it's from the African countries that the West fetch all these resources with which they're developing their industries and as a result orchestrate an even share of the wealth to everyone of their citizens. Meanwhile, our so-called rulers prefer to take the money and bank it into tax-haven countries and Islands, they prefer to buy homes abroad and pay yearly taxes to these countries while their fellow citizens are homeless, jobless, and without the insurance of any daily meals. Who therefore is to blame? The government, full stop. In the West you have many families with children as many as some couples do not have in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa. What does happen in the West? The West has an aged and ageing population, and they're trying to curb the population growth in Africa even with unnatural measures if possible. There are many which die of non lethal sicknesses in Nigeria and else where in Africa simply because they don't have any means to cure themselves, were they killed because of over children? No. What does happen is this - abortion is free and no morale is accounted for it, since they've removed God from their systems, I mean systems just whatever you can imagine. Liberty is their god and rights their saviour. Why should we imitate them? It makes no sense. Imam, I really thank you, as warmly as I'm thanking all the participants. Thumb up to you Edith, the journalist. Greetings.

Nigeria has been able to get on the road of rapid growth and development at any time for the last 40 years. Remember Abuja being built in the 70's. Nowadays, even with a barrel at $100, local politics seems to rely on private sector for any massive investment (except the train). Well I dont have a say for 200 million population. + But India has "Balika Vadhu" *Tv serial* for addressing *Child Marriage* for very crucial state like Rajasthan. + Even Muslims in India is now enough Educated, *Muslim Fertility rate* is 3.1 not much higher then India Average. + Govt job is governance. They dictate, they currupt, they do everything. *Suffering of* Farmers in India, and Hong Kong in China + *Population Densitty* is the game, China have out of proportion area then India. (Including Fertile Land and Land Resource) + Yet, India is suffering, cus they dont have proper population policy till now, *India Giving Birth to 25million children as compared to China 15million children every year.* - Indian women does need to have affirmation of their husband, cus he might creat brawl if there is any *surgency for Birth Control.*
