Night Diving at Waikiki pond. Fish sleeping video made with GoPro and LED diving lights

When fish is sleeping it is not scared by divers. You can get close to the fish at night and made perfect shots using LED diving lights and GoPro camera. Also you can see a hermit crab, eels, slipper lobster, shrimp crawling at night.

Very nice. You have a good eye being able to spot the Panunuhu @ 2:28 and the Nohu @ 4:05 the best camouflage artists on the night reef. I used to night-dive Waikiki between the lighthouse and Natatorium back over 40 years ago mostly for lobster and uhu. Back then had plenty fish so easy to provide for the family. Mahalo nui for sharing this video.

Not to sound negative cause this video is awesome......but there’s a Hawaii tiger shark tracking website that follows all the tagged tigers in Hawaii waters, and you can click on the points where they came the closest to shore. I noticed that 90% of the time it was in the night time hours. Have you had any close calls with them doing night dives?

Filming an night requires good light. Most LED flashlights make focused beam and not covering all area. So I have built my own waterproofed light using flat 10 Watts LED (no lens) from eBay and 3S Li-ion battery for RC models (LED driver is required). It spreads powerful flood light on 180 degrees. Second light source is regular LED diving light with sharp focus. I have installed both lights on the top of frame keeping it 8" aside from camera. Thanks for watching!

I am night diving also almost every week end along Marshall Islands coastlines and the scenery are awesome, your video inspired me do the same way of my next dive, but one thing I noticed your camera seems moving, isn't it attached in your mask? There's mask that GoPro can be mounted for easy video capturing.

I have build a frame 20" wide with two LED lights and camera in the center. With frame your video is more stable. You can target your camera better and move closer to object. Most of shots I made from one foot or even closer. Yes my video was shaky because of waves on shallow water. Probably some additional stabilisation like 3D gimbal or anchoring frame to the bottom will help. Also it is good to find or build powerful LED lights with wide angle spot light to cover all the area of filming. Good Luck!

Night diving rules .Never spot the light directly on the eyes of the organisms . Never touch anything . It is their world you are visiting them, pay respect as they are sleeping.

Hawaii, Honolulu, East of Waikiki. I was surprised to see so many sea creatures in such an urban area with a lot of hi-rise condo and hotels around.

you shouldn't shine the light directly on the fish (especially parrotfish because their membrane that disguises their scent from predators get destroyed when they wake up and it takes about an hour before they can form a new one), instead you should shine the side of the beam so its a softer light:)

Sleeping? They realize that night time is when sharks and other predators roam the reef looking for a meal. They are looking at you and happy that some creature is dumb enough to be putting them self out there as bait.
