Going around on a 6,000 ft runway at 180 MPH with a 12-second engine spool up time in the L-39 is exciting enough, even more so at night. Flight training: mattguthmiller.com/CFI

Keep watching this channel for an accident report if they keep running approaches like this. Run the plan down with a bunch of drag and high aoa….with more engine power….you’ll go home more often

I’ve watched many videos by Matt. I often get the feeling he could use some humility. I suppose flying around the world as a kid can make you feel like Chuck Yeager. He flies his Bonanza IFR at night over mountains seemingly without a care. And now in the L39 he has what seems to a cavalier attitude. Things can go south in a hurry in a single engine jet.
@bobnewkirk7186
@bobnewkirk7186 Жыл бұрын
I believe I heard the reason they went around was they were 20kts too fast on final. As you say, a cavalier attitude in any airplane is not good, in a jet its a recipe for disaster.
@twowheelstwowings8553
@twowheelstwowings8553 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing at 05:45 when they're cresting that mountain at only ~130kts in a climb. Not too many options there for a forced landing, might have been the camera angle and I'm not an experience nor an L-39 pilot but it looked like they were betting their lives on that one jet engine there. Sure it's a jet not a piston engine but still, maybe a bit of jet fueled cavaliering going on I thought

I once had the opportunity to take the controls of an L-39 while at our cruising altitude. I too was in the back seat. The two things I noticed were 1) the controls are sooooooo sensitive and 2) the canopy rail from the backseat creates the illusion that your are pitched slightly nose down, so I was constantly slowly raising the nose. I kept porpoising.

Keep horsing the throttle around like that with this aircraft on final, and that spool time is going to catch you out boys. With L-39's you need to keep the boards out and the power up, stabilise it early and if it gets tight you can lose the drag and get energy back immediately. Or, get the Garrett conversion and all your problems go away.. if you plant it, I will feel very sorry for the aircraft not so much for you..
@grafhilgenhurst9717
@grafhilgenhurst9717 Жыл бұрын
And approach speed for the L-39 is 120 knots, plus or minus 10. So maybe you were going 140 knots, or 154 mph when you went around.

I’ve heard of this before, what’s the correct way of doing it?
@timhegg2177
@timhegg2177 Жыл бұрын
@@legendhasit2568 reciprocating engines have instantaneous power available on tap any time you need it. By contrast, turbofans, and especially older turbojet engines, take awhile to spool up from idle. Therefore, there is a long delay from when you push the throttle(s) up and when you actually get any response. This delay can kill you if you are not prepared. The answer is to have the engine(s) “spooled up” anytime you are near the ground, for example. It helps to have a stabilized approach, on glide path, as opposed to being high on approach. Using drag (flaps, gear, etc) appropriately so that power is needed in order to maintain speed and glideslope. Then, you are not at idle during the last 500 feet or so, above the ground. This is all standard procedure in any jet, and for good reason. Imagine being high, but on speed, on approach with the engine(s) at idle. You decide to go around at 200 feet when you can’t salvage the landing. You add power, but the delay is so long, the airspeed decays, and you have neither the speed or altitude to avoid a low altitude stall. No bueno.
