Street photography at night for me is very poetic it has mystery in it. It is my film noir.
Images which look pretty ordinary in daylight can be very dramatic in the darkness of the night.
Taking pictures at night has its challenges mainly because of lack of light. So I built my compositions around available sources of light. All cities have a lot of light Street lamps, stop lights, car lights windows and more.
I also see it with the different point of view. If during the day I like my pictures to have feeling of being inside the situations, participating in them. At night I prefer to be an observer from outside.
Because of that, I choose different lens than the one I use for daylight. My go to lens for daylight street photography is 24 F 2.8 pancake lens which is about 38 mm on my camera. Here is the link to my video where I am talking about that.
For the night photography I use Sigma Art 18-35mm f1.8 zoom. Here's why I choose this lens for my night street photography. It has 1.8 fixed aperture which gives me extra stop compared to 24 mm 2.8 pancake. With ISO 1600 or 3200 it allows me to photograph pretty much everything I want, handheld. Because it is zoom lens I have more flexibility in my compositions. 18-35 translates into 29-56 mm lens in full frame. Giving me the range from wide angle to normal lens. I also like the image quality when shooting wide open. It is soft and silky, very cinematic. The lens is pretty large and heavy which helps me to stabilize camera handheld. And at night In the dark the size of it is not the issue with people I photograph.
I prefer to do all street photography at night in black and white. Color is difficult at night because most light sources on the street produce kind of greenish yellowish light not particularly attractive. There are many different kinds of light sources and balancing them in post-production is next to impossible.

HI friends! How often do you shoot street photography at night? Do you prefer color or black and white images?

Very nice video. I am not happy with my night photos. I try to keep my ISO as low as possible, so usually I end up underexposing and recovering a bit in post. Still... not much room without loss of IQ. So I was just wondering... should I try B&W??? After seeing your video, I am convinced that is the best way. Colors are too much of a challenge. Night is all about shapes and shades. I will try that! Thank you.

@@jacopovalentino I don't know your camera setup, but going up in ISO is not necessarily a bad thing. You need to decide for yourself. Underexposing and compensating in post usually degrades the image more, than step up in ISO. I like bw images at night so I don't need to deal with crappy color because of mixed light sources. Good luck.

Thank you for this great video: it motivated me to get out my 35mm - 1.8 gear to take night shots. Thank you furthermore for the camera data you gave in the pictures. That helps me to find practical adjustments. Kind regards from Hamburg (excuse my weak English)

Agree great tips. Will try it in my home town. Let see how it goes. Can it be done with a 14mm 2.8 prime or is that too wide for subject isolation
@Vladimiradventurephotography
@Vladimiradventurephotography 6 жыл бұрын
What camera? In general, I would say normal lens is best. Wide angle will require to be very close(not good with people) or have to much dark areas (not good for strong composition). Happy shooting!

Thank you very much for this video Sir! I love BnW's more than color in most cases. Daytime can be questionable, so I mostly do color. I love night time street photography, but get very little practice. Question: How do you determine which shutter speed to use as you go scene by scene, and each scene is different. Thank You For Your Time Sir :)

Thank you for your comment. I usually find average exposure set, like 1/30@1.8 and keep it on manual with possible correction in case local street lighting changes significantly. With RAW file you have room to play. Good luck.

Breathtaking shots. You are an inspiration to beginners like me. I love the final street shot, with the blonde walking away. But for a real film noir The End scene, you need a little fog or misty rain. (:-)
