Photographing with this unique fluorographic black & white film originally used for lung x-rays in Eastern Europe. Washi Film "F" is a special X-ray film used for mass lung disease diagnose. Being coated without anti-halation layer, this unique film offers a high diffusion effect and beautiful grain.
Film Noir seemed like the perfect vehicle to showcase this film and how night images from Washi F are pure magic.
All the still images were taken on the same night with the Olympus OM-1 35mm film camera. All were taken handheld with a 1/15 shutter speed, aperture varied from f1.8 to f2.8. The film was developed in FPP-110 developer for 8 minutes with 10 sec agitation every two minutes. The slower agitation schedule was to help preserve detail in the highlights.
Washi (the world's smallest film company) distributes unusual film emulsions that capture the world in a unique way. For more information, visit them at: filmwashi.com/en/

Your production and storytelling are always so on point! The shots you came away with are super impressive, I haven’t shot with film since I was a kid but you’re making me want to give it a go again! Outstanding work as always my friend!

I'm a fan of classic American film noir and I really enjoyed this video which has a very clever script. What is the beautiful jazz piece we can hear? The unique rendering of the Washi F film at night is fantastic and you write as well as you photograph. You also have the right look for this atmosphere. And your French pronunciation of "film noir" is perfect. Thanks James.

Love the Raymond Chandler-esque theme. Very Noir. For me the film seemed to work best with the strings of lights across the main street. Nice work Jim.

Ah, what a terrific, creative video. And the fun you had making it was tangible. Couldn't figure out why you would put on a tie to photograph at night until your brilliant intro made it clear. A little disappointed you didn't lean against a lamppost and light a (pretend) cigarette, Sam Spade. Had never heard of this film but it would be fun to skulk around the city after dark and try it, especially during the holidays when there are lots of lights. You deserve a KZfaq Oscar for this little gem.

I'm really happy about your storytelling and style. Using film seems to be really fun, though I try to keep in mind that the medium is just that, whereas creative freedom is entirely determined by the person and not the camera. You can give a low-end camera to a professional photographer and you can reasonably expect good pictures (in terms of composition, style, etc), whereas giving a professional-grade camera to a beginner will not reasonably result in the same

Nice images. I've been doing night photography with my Olympus (digital) EM-5 and now I want to do it with my Bronica GS-1 and Washi F. You used FPP-110 developer, I have only HC110, any ideas as to whether more or less (or the same) development time would be needed?
@VintageInsightPhotography
@VintageInsightPhotography Жыл бұрын
FPP-110 and HC-110 are identical... according to the Film Photography Project. I have not come across anyone who thinks differently. I've shot Washi F in both 35mm and 120 formats. Due to the smaller negative, the 35mm images do show more light blooming. Night shots with lights are magic with this film... daylight snow scenes, not so much! Have fun with it and thanks for watching!

Hi Jim. Did you still have to use a tripod with the Washi film?
@VintageInsightPhotography
@VintageInsightPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
The Washi F is ISO 100. I shot all those frames at 1/15 handheld. That’s the slowest shutter speed I can (sometimes) do without a tripod. Your mileage may vary. I tried one shot (not in the video) at 1/8 second… that didn’t work. Lots of motion blur.
