There aren’t many who can can say they’ve caught more swords than squid, but that’s the case for Matt Watson. For decades Matt has seen loads of squid when out sword fishing at night, but has never targeted them - but this time, they do exactly that. And as it turns out, they’re not in short supply.

That colour change is such a cool feature of squid, they have chromatopores that open and close to cause the colour change.

Do they have to ink out completely? I was under the impression that they can only ink the one time once out of the water

They can refill their ink sacks in 15 seconds so they can ink continuously, I think they kinda give up on it eventually and don't ink anymore even though they still can.

Did you find some off the local coast ,I caught some off turakina ,boat fishing in morning, I will try shore fishing Wellington harbor soon, seen squid snorkeling makra area.

they are arrow squid not calamari still chew ok but they are a different species ;)

I'd like to know to...yet I'd guess still deep as the bluenose eye had popped from coming up from real deep ie >200m...but hopefully we will find out

Vivian Morresey bluenose live deep around 300m and he said at night squid come to the surface so because he has the underwater light to attracted them 👍🏻👍🏻 i love catching squid too

Depth doesn't really matter out there, I was out on the weekend in 630m and we had them coming up to the boat at night with the lights.

@@LoiNguyen-zf4uw yeah mate it works fantastic at night to attract them, especially on the middle of the ocean. Pretty sure that's what the commercial squid boats do to catch them
