The version I saw in high school had the coolest subtitles. Like.. when the vampire called the kid in the pool, blood came from his nose and clouded into words. When the Witch screamed, the subtitles exploded. It was so awesome.

This was the movie that set my hopes too high forevermore about how movies would be subtitled in the future, where not only are they a function, but also an aspect of the visual flair. Quite possibly the only movie that actually took advantage of the way DVD stored subtitles to enhance the viewing experience (they were stored as a video file overlay, not just as some file filled with text and markup language)

The Nightwatch series had the most unique take on the supernatural. A kind of synchronistic progression only an Other can see or interact with while the mundane can only see an Other behaving oddly. The way Zabalon manipulates the future via gaming on a console or the Nightwatch operates under the guise of the electric company. I got a sense of realism in the unreal.

I do too, it came as a boxset. They were both streaming on Netflix a few years ago too, at least the UK Netflix. Nightwatch in particular had built a pretty solid cult following, so they were getting mentioned in a lot of best vampire movie lists. This was how it ended up on Netflix, it was their earlier days when they used to try to get the rights to the latest buzz worthy cult following movies. I don't think they really care to do that anymore, not since they started making their own content instead. I have no idea why it never really took a hold in cult movies, it was getting there, then things seemed to die down.

Saw both of these in a local independent theater here in the U.S. when they were each first released internationally. The way they incorporated the English subtitles as visual effects into the movie was brilliantly done. I bought the physical media release as soon as they were available. Such a great addition to my foreign film collection and I love introducing new people to them.

The truck that they drive in is a "МЧС" It's basically emergency service in Russia At least they had this kinda trucks, back in a day Also, it's actually "twilight" and "the gloom" The thing is, in the movie and the book, used word "сумрак", which translates as "dusk" and basically contains words "сумерки" - "twightlight" and "мрак" - "the gloom"

One interesing concept in the Night Watch novels is that both Light and Dark Others are morally grey. Some light others are corrupt cops and some dark others are just tragic victims.

i so hope the english subbed version you found used the DVD subtitles. They fully made use of the subtitle track being a video overlay, and make use of video effects to make some words disolve or stylized lettering to draw attention to certain things. Truly, the DVD subbed version I watched years ago set a standard for subtitling that has never been matched. Possibly due to changes in subtitle encoding on optical media, or because it takes so much extra effort to do something extra for subtitling that foreign audiences will apppreciate.

Not gonna lie, I liked it more than the films unfortunately) They are funny in the sense, that a lot of stuff in them is out of context or completely new and not from the books. The films can be a bit crazy and disorienting haha but thank you! I agree though a lot of stuff in the movie just comes out of nowhere and you have to draw a lot of conclusions yourself or you will be lost. I think the story in the book is better told for sure, and what they do with Yager in the book is a lot more interesting. when i cover the second film I will probably compare it to the novel more and talk about what they changed

This movie was a trip, especially without having any knowledge of the book. 17:40 I think the reason why the witch at the beginning of the movie was trying to kill the unborn child was precisely because she was able to sense who he'd turn into later in life or that he's eventually going to be a threat. She's also not the last dark other that tries to kill him either.

I think, I have both on DVD somewhere, but only the international editions. There were a lot of cuts, especially to the first movie. They cut out an entire plot thread about a light-aligned incubus, for example. It may seem out of place, but, imho, it is a useful scene to show the night watch (the light side) isn't necessarily all that "good" or "virtuous" either--it's more an ideology war. The books, of course, go into a lot more detail about deconstructing the light vs dark idea and making both sides morally gray, cliché as they are :D

Nope, in the books, shapeshifters come in every shape and sizes, regardless of the side, light shapeshifters are called metamorphsorcerours while dark shapeshifters are known colloquially as werewolfs (because this is the most common transformation) but also can take different shapes like giant lizards. Also its it good to note that Gesar/Geser, both in the movies and in the books, is the actual King Gesar of the kingdom of Link from the ancient Central Asian/Tibetan epic, he uses alias of Boris Ignatievitch, while for Zabulon/Zavulon is also an alias, taken from the old testament, while his real name is Artur, not much beyond that is known about him. One on 20k humans is born "other", I will not go into much details as the books are much more lore heavy than the films but there is at least one other method for an ordinary person to become "other". There are much more dark others than light ones, as there are much more evil people than good people, but the light others in average are much more powerful to compensate. There are two ways one unlocks their "other" abilities, some never do and live their lives as ordinary humans, others are born humans, they either have to be discovered by anther of their kind and turned, so to speak, or to unlock their abilities by some highly emotional state, due to which they enter the gloom/twilight by accident, as part of the "game" sometimes newly discovered other are manipulated to join one side or the other depending who discovered them. The second way is more common but with higher mortality rate as the new born others do not know how to survive in the gloom/twilight and are consumed by it, unless they luck out and get out or someone helps them, again by accident. The side is chosen at the first manifestation of the powers and is highly variable, and is mostly determined by two things, the emotional state and character, however it is possible one to change side after their transformation, but is very rare. Others are immortal, not just vampires. The gloom/twilight does not exist anywhere outside Earth, if there is no human life there is no gloom/twilight, like space, for instance. There is possibility for events in the real world to manifest in the gloom/twilight, like when the atomic bombs in Hiroshima/Nagasaki were detonated, the others in the gloom/twilight were incinerated as well, at least those in the first couple of layers, the stronger the event, deeper it penetrates. In the deeper layer of the gloom/twilight others lose their human likeness, dark go more monstrous, while light can go more angelic, but its usually up tp personal preference.
