I am 66, physically disabled and just received my 30 day notice to vacate. I have lived in my apartment for 13 yrs. I have always paid my rent on time and never had a lease violation until this past week. I will have to live in my car as there is a waiting list for senior housing. My violation said that I had an unauthorized individual living in my home. That is an untruthful statement. My adult son stayed at my apartment for 10 days. I am low income but had the permission from the local housing authority to have him visit me. The real truth is that my apartment complex wants to go retail rent. They want to charge $700-$800 a month for rent. They also want to charge $65.00 per month for water payable to the leasing office instead of the local utility company. They also want to charge $16.00 per month for preventive maintenance even when they do nothing for your apartment. The only thing they did for my apartment is 5 years ago they put in a new dishwasher and disposal. The carpet in the living room is 17 years old. The carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms is 13 years old. The vinyl tile in kitchen and bathrooms is 20 years old which is when these apartments were built. This is a small town in the southern Missouri Ozarks with little employment unless you want to work fast food job. All of the defense contractors left about 10 years ago. Who do they think is going to pay this inflated rent? Because they are greedy I now have to live in my car. Iam an Insulin dependent diabetic. I have to take 5 shots a day to stay alive. How do I keep my insulin cool in my car when the temperature is 85 degrees or higher?

I'm a 74-year old divorced father with 2-adult children, 4-adult grand-children, and 2-minor great grand-children all living within 50-miles of me (I no longer drive). Though I used to try and stay in contact on a regular basis via texts or emails (they don't do phone calls), only one granddaughter ever replies (typically once a year at Christmas time). To everyone else I simply don't exist /sigh/

Maybe they can't afford it/are struggling themselves. It's bad pretty much everywhere. I'm in virtually the same boat as this woman at 61, but my 2 adult children are not financially set themselves, let alone to house me.

I recall when mass killings in public places in the UK were being reported quite regularly, before it started occurring in the U.S. We heard a lot on the news about them happening in other countries until it began happening here so often that it took over the reporting. We don't really get much detailed news about other individual countries unless it's international, like the wars in Ukraine & Israel. Also, there's a big difference in media coverage in other countries compared to the U.S., which is extremely media oriented & undated with investigative reporters. Everything we do is reported internationally, which isn't the case in most other countries where media is more government controlled.

You made some good points here but consider I said "regular" mass shootings and did not infer that they don't happen in other Western democracies. The Gun Violence Archive tracks these events describing a mass shooting as four people killed or injured not counting the shooter. There was over a hundred in the first four months of 2024 in the US. They are exceedingly rare in other societies compared to America. In this digital age, there is no shortage of reporting from other Western democracies, so it's not like we don't hear about them. The difference is that in America, it's just a part of everyday life.
