These days the difference between hardcore and metal is very fluid. Originally hardcore comes from punk as a counter movement to the increasing comercialisation of punk rock. Early bands to check out are bad brains, black flag, or conflict. Most of the modern extreme metal subgenres are actually massively influenced by late 80s hardcore. Generally you can differenciate between very punky old school and more metal leaning new school. You have correctly identified the vocals as well as the aggression as definite hardcore elements. A few older bands bands to check out: Bad Brains, a rastafari acid jazz band who decided they wanted to do punk and basically started hardcorepunk. Conflict, a UK anarchopunk band that hasn't gotten anywhere near the recognition they deserve. Discharge, because they are basically the definition of early UK hardcore and are fucking amazing. Sick of it all, a 90s new york hardcore band thats still around today. A few newer bands to check out: End It, from Baltimore with tons of groove and really bouncy mosh parts with their ep Unpleasant Living. Gallows, from the UK, especially their second record Grey Britain. Trash Talk, from sacramento with literally anything they made, although I'm personally loving their 2020 ep Squalor. And if you like it a little poppy for a change, Turnstile, also from Baltimore, who are currently blowing up like crazy. And well deservedly so. And last but very much not least Zulu, who will just blow your fucking mind. Generally, lyrical content is very important in hardcore so I'd recommend checking out the lyrics if you decide to look up some bands. A large part of the hardcore culture is having to say something.

There’s something about this EP that really strikes a chord with me emotionally. One of my biggest fears is losing my wife and I cannot imagine the guilt of losing her in a car crash while I’m at the wheel. The repeated line “we should have left before the storm” just kills me. This EP is insanely dark and it absolute goes hard. Can’t wait to hear what they do next

The emotion in this EP hits so hard. You think it's all angry because of the speed and the screams but when you learn the emotional content behind the lyrics and the themes, your realise that the angry vibes were grief, regret, sadness, loneliness, and all those other painful emotions and that just makes it such an incredibly emotional piece of music.

This EP is the best entry point to Knocked Loose. Even if you don't like the rest of his work, this EP is terrifying. The guitars, the drums and of course Brian's voice. The ensemble itself is a journey, a 20-minute experience in which you come away completely worn out. A truly masterpiece. Greetings from Spain, Drew :)

I get your point but I tend to disagree. I think one of the earlier albums would be a better entry point. Since this EP is more of a concept thing and doesn't really match their usual composition and sound.

So glad you checked this out, Drew. Unbelievably heavy but so emotionally charged. The darkness of the lyrics and instruments, coupled with the incredible animation, is so powerful. I was kind of a Knocked Loose fan before this EP but when it just randomly dropped, it instantly became one of my favorite projects. I'm a writer by trade, so storytelling has such an impact on me, and KL did a great job telling a story while creating beautifully dark metal. As far as the difference between hardcore and metalcore, KL is one of the few bands that seem to blend the two. Elements of their music are definitely hardcore-inspired, but I get more of a metalcore vibe from this project.

Knocked Loose have already shown they are an exceptional hardcore band with their last 2 albums. This EP put them on another level that transcends hardcore. The guitar riffs were more than just riffs. They set the feeling and tone of the songs very well. And Bryan's song writing and delivery were amazing. One of my favourite records ever You mentioned you liked Bryan's vocals. At the start of the bands career, Bryan was kind of mocked for his tone with people liking it to Mickey mouse. He even went a bit viral from the "Arf Arf" part of Counting Worms. I really like his vocals as it is very distinct as you said The fast parts you kept saying you didn't really like are called galloping, well in drumming it is anyway and it follows a certain drum pattern and is very common in hardcore
@CodyKeltner

Finally glad to see Knocked Loose getting the recognition they deserve. And I’m glad you’re giving them a chance. Most people after the first couple of lyrics would just turn my phone off completely. And the vocals are among my favorite in the entirety of metal. Also fun fact, that you probably already knew: these boys are from Louisville, Kentucky. My home state and let me tell ya. It’s great having something good come from the place you were born in. Even if that place is pretty boring and pretty much ignored by the rest of the states. Anyways drew great reaction as always. Can’t wait to see that For Those That Wish To Exist album reaction from Architects.

Difference between hardcore and metalcore is actually pretty simple. Hardcore is a punk derived genre while metalcore is a mix of obviously metal and, you guessed it, hardcore. Knocked Loose is actually a perfect representation of what metalcore is... stuff like Invent Animate, ERRA, Currents is what metalcore is slowly turning into but they are much more progressive metalcore. Knocked Loose, Every Time I Die, Vein, Norma Jean, Converge, etc are your pure bred metalcore
@Drake45100
@Drake45100 Жыл бұрын
As you asked, the main difference between Metalcore and Hardcore is as you said, the delivery of vocals and how songs are structured. You'll never hear like full riffs in Metalcore anymore, the only band I know that ever did it was The Ghost Inside, I believe they call themselfs Metalcore but implement a lot of Hardcore elements in their songs, just like a different vocal delivery and full riffs. Also in Hardcore you won't hear any catchy choruses like in Metalcore these days. If you listen to more Hardcore and compare it to Metalcore you will get the differences instantly.
@XAVR_
@XAVR_ Жыл бұрын
Hardcore = Hardcore Metalcore = Metal with Hardcore influences The screaming in Metalcore originated from hardcore punk. Metalcore pioneers brought in the clean vocals, complex riffs and big guitar solos from metal, and combined them with hardcore to get metalcore. Metalcore has evolved a lot from those days, and arguably despite being "hardcore" on paper, Knocked Loose are knocking (😏) on the door of Metalcore. At the end of the day, it's all just sick music 🤘🏻

Info: Genre wise, Hardcore just means Punk. From that and Heavy Metal birthed Metalcore, short for Metallic Hardcore. The very first Metalcore bands had this exact style; raw and abrasive, like Zao, Converge, and the like. Then came the Melodic Death Metal inspired bands in As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Darkest Hour etc, followed by Djent such as Sikth at the helm and then later Periphery and Architects. So yes, Metalcore is very often this angry. Pick up an early Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, or especially Zao record and you'll find this aggression all over it.

I hope you work your way back with A Different Shade Of Blue next eventually. People mention Laugh Tracks a lot and while it has some cool stuff going on and it’s the album that made them blow up in the scene, this one and ADSOB sound more mature and yet terrifying. There’s a song in ADSOB called In The Walls that was inspired by the horror videogame demo Silent Hill P.T. so you can imagine how instrumentally and lyrically heavy it is. Bryan’s unique vocals give their sound a even more unsettling vibe compared to their peers.

11:39 in this EP Knocked Loose has much more Metalcore influences than in their previous releases. You can almost call it Metallic Hardcore. It is also much more experimetal like Portrayal of Guilt which the vocalist is featured in the 2nd Track. Nowadays a lot of Hardcore and Metalcore is merging and taking influence from each other. I would highly recomend to check out the 1st EP Pop Culture from Knocked Loose. Its much more on the raw Hardcore side. If you like i can name some good Hardcore releases to check out.

Defining characteristics of Hard-Core: vocal delivery is closer to shouting, the rhythm section takes from punk in terms of the drumming patterns and the way the bass tone is designed, and very rarely is there a typical chorus. The guitars are meant to be the "hooks" of the songs with simple, but effective riffs, occasionally there are vocal hooks but it's usually just new sections all the way through the song. Knocked Loose's old music is more true to Hard-Core, their new stuff fits somewhere between Hard-Core and Metalcore so both are technically correct. Their new guitarist contributed to the updated sound a good bit, as he usually plays a 7-string.

I think you would really enjoy the album "Fear & Dagger" by Paleface, it has elements of "what if Slipknot was a hardcore band?" with a bunch of other elements sprinkled into it. Maybe check out the song "Dead Man's Diary" which features Flo from LANDMVRKS if you wanna get a feel for the band.

Hardcore isnt shreddy. It has sometimes chorus, sometimes two step, almost thrashy almost blastbeats, and always a breakdown plus breakdown riffs. Also always angry af as a rule. haha punch in the face feels

Hardcore is a subgenre of punk which is known for pushing aggression, known for being extremely anti government and usually rooted in activism and that drum pattern your not a fan of the (bo kah booty kah one) is the classic punk drum pattern 😁 also the hardcore riffs are where the whole open note chugging started in the form of slam riffs to make you want to flip a table lol. Metalcore on the other side is much more subdued mixing hardcore verses, poppy cleaner choruses closer to classic metal and is more emotionally sad on the lyrical side aswell as the musicianship being slightly more on the technical side of things. Excuse my punctuation I rushed writing this as I'm at work😅
