Hello Lost In Vegas ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. Floor Jansen is one of the few singers that always give me goosebumps as soon as she starts singing.

For Ryan, Floor Jansen (the singer in this performance) was on a Dutch singing show in 2019 called Beste Zangers. The songs are shorter than this and will let you mostly see her perform outside the metal genre and in different languages as well. Since you like good vocals, I think you'll enjoy her performances (six solos and two duets).

This group is very versatile. Don’t judge their “type” of music based on one song. They really do a lot of different type of songs, and are among the most talented I have ever seen. Certainly better than most anything the US produces.

"I Wish I Had An Angel" is a more straightforward song from them that you should check out, and falls in your song-length requirements

This is a "Score" (about a Ghost love, a non existent one), so it's more of a composition than a 3-5 minute "song". Yes, Nightwish came before Evanescence ( their first recording 'Origin' was in 2000) while Nightwish's 'Angels fall first' was released in 1997. There were quite a few bands that started in Europe in the 90's... Singer Floor Jansen's first band After Forever also debuted in mid-90's... so did the band Within Temptation. Epica was launched in late 90's (I think)... Kamelot was a power metal band in early 90's, and they became symphonic w/ time. Italy's Rhapsody was also a symphonic band in the 90's... now there r 2 bands - Rhapsody of Fire... and Luca Turulli's Rhapsody.

There's a guy by the name of Gabriel Bardoc. He is a bit of a lorekeeper for the Nightwish Army, and has The List and The Lore. The singer is Floor Jansen, and we refer to her as our Valkyrie. Many singers sing what they can. Floor sings what she wants. Not all the songs are this long, this is one of the longer ones. It's a score...like a movie score. That's the idea. The kayboardist is Tuomas Halopainen. He is the genius behind the music, and the songwriter. Metal Mozart. i would recommend Romanticide from the same concert. The Wacken concert was kinda special....a type of magic. Storytime is also a good one. You'll see some more versatility from Floor, and the rest of the group. Floor Jansen the Queen of metal ❤️is a classically trained and a professional voice coach with at least 20 years experience and can do anything from death metal growling to high opera notes and different styles and languages, her previous bands After Forever, Northward and Revamp, and she was also featured in several Ayreon live shows and a Dutch reality show beste zangers 2019 and 2021 she is also married to the drummer of the band Sabaton, awesome 😎

It's a shame that Marko the bassist left the band, his vocals complement so well to floor and did the same with Annette and Tarja. He will be missed

For me, Floor Jansen is the best singer on the planet, to fully understand what she is capable of, you need to listen to her, not only in nightwish, but also in her old bands After Forever, ReVamp, in these groups she wrote songs, you also need to listen her covers on her channel, and her covers in the Beste Zangers 2019 show.

I was lucky enough to see Nightwish live about 6 years ago and they transcended any preconceived notions I had about them. Truly spectacular band and even better live show!

NIGHTWISH HAS A FEW LONG SONGS BUT THEY HAVE PLENTY OF THE SHORTER 5 MIN SONGS THAT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY.

Much of the Nightwish catalog is 4 to 5 minute pieces. They have their share of epic pieces, this one... Greatest Show on Earth, Poet and the Pendulum, to name a few. But for the most part it's 4 to 5 minutes of symphonic metal. I really think you guys would enjoy Romanticide I Wish I Had An Angel I Want My Tears Back My personal preference is...all live performances from Nightwish...mostly from this same, Wacken Open Air festival in 2013. Another masterpiece of a live performance they have is The Poet and the Pendulum (Live at Wembley 2016). It's for sure a long song but it has even more of the cinematic elements George talked about, the arrangement is incredible and you can be presented also to the the male vocalist of the band, Marko Hietala (which is the bass player).

Floor Jansen, which is this singer is the third female singer. 3 different eras to explore :)!!! This is Nightwish in all its glory: Complete artistry in all aspecs - musical composition and execution, lyrical depth and message delivery, musicianship and talent, on-stage charisma and on, and on. I mean, they gave credit to their bus drivers and Floors wardrob assistants in their credit roll out at the end. Headlining Wacken is the pinnacle for every metal band but for Nightwish, it was a watershed moment captured for the ages. IMO it is the golden standard to which all live metal performances (or performances in general) should be compared to.

“Weak Fantasy” or “Dark Chest of Wonders” will probably be more to y’all’s liking. Fast, aggressive, beautiful blend of metal and orchestra, and super deep lyrics.

Symphony and metal go together like bread and butter tbh. Metal is the closest modern music to classical pieces (Bach, Mozart, etc) that we will ever get and it really shows For more symphonic metal check out Kamelot and Epica!

More Nightwish please, so many songs to choose from, Dark Chest of Wonders is pretty sick (sub 5 minutes too!)

Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today. The other vocalists are - Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals. Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals. The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is EXTREMLY varied. The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set. Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible. Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb. Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken). Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance. Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version. Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way. Prepare for the Nightwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!😎🤘

"Your's Is An Empty Hope".....live from the Nightwish Cruise, has as cool a guitar hook as you'll find. On the heavier side, compared to "Ghost Love Score" (and much shorter lol). Also, "Romanticide" from this show are far more traditional metal songs that seriously kick ass. You are absolutely correct though that this type of song translates much better live. Nightwish is one of those bands that is best experienced live.

Phantom of the opera from end of an era. It is short and tremendous

I think some of the faster songs might be up your alley. From the same show you should check out Romanticide, Song of Myself, Storytime. And from live at wembley Shudder Before the Beautiful or 7 Days to the Wolves.

This is one of those videos that every reaction channel has to do. Took you guys longer than most, but I'm glad you got to it. It's a killer performance and so much better than the studio version. Floor Jansen is a vocal force of nature that's impressed every KZfaq vocal coach who's heard her. I doubt Evanescence was influenced by Nightwish. The only similarity is that both had female singers and had symphonic elements, but Nightwish were MUCH more symphonic/instrumental focused while Evanescence were more influenced by nu-metal (Linkin Park, Korn) and goth rock and wrote pretty basic/standard songs.

The greatest live performance of all time in any genre in my opinion. Could be another 10 minutes and I'd be enraptured. Thanks for reacting!

Sorry to hear you never went further with Nightwish, because you did not like the song length or prefer the style of music, but to each his own. This was song 13 of a 15 song concert set. All of this concert was epic, and written for 2 prior singers. Since then there have been multiple world tours, and 2 albums in a variety of styles. Not all of their songs are as long as this one.

Yes the musicians are from Finland except their singer Floor Jansen who is from Holland.

There are so many good bands in this genre, and they arent all so long this song specifically is very long epic and is usually a show finisher.

Keep in mind this was LIVE. No auto tune, no overdubs..... this is pure raw talent. Floor is pitch perfect the entire concert. Very few singers on the planet have that kind of vocal command and control. And no two Nightwish song's sound anything alike. They are completely unpredictable but always sound like them. What a legendary band.

This is one of the best live performances ever. I was surprised that these guys didn't like it more, but I have to admit that I wouldn't have liked them when they first came out. I grew up on Led Zeppelin and Rush, but I was into hard stuff like Napalm Death at the time. Maybe as they get older they'll realize how good this really was.

I was gonna suggest "Greatest Show on Earth" LIVE because its one on the most amazing things I've ever seen, but that shits like 20 minutes long.

I've been a fan for 20 years, and this particular concert was just gold from start to finish. Nightwish is a live band, part of the genre. If you want short, and awesome, 'Shudder Before the Beautiful' Live at Wembley Arena 2015. Romanticide at Wacken 2013 is great also, Amaranth at Wacken 2013 actually hit the charts in America, Storytime is a fan favorite too, Bless the Child, Song of Myself at Wacken 2013 all classic. Nightwish has gone through phases, super progressive, almost Dream Theater'esqe, than they got really radio friendly with songs like Wish I Had an Angel, Amaranth, Nemo, and then said screw it and started making 15 minute songs with classics like Poet and the Pendulum, which if you read the history and watch the Wembley Arena version is phenomenal. Greatest Show on Earth is 23 minutes long, but incredible too. Nemo is a garbage song that also ranked in the pop-charts, and therefore, they have to play it every concert.

The live performance is different because I dont think Floor Jansen was on the original record.

Hopefully you will consider doing another Nightwish song with Floor Jansen singing -- perhaps Storytime or Romanticide from the same Wacken concert (both much shorter than GLS).

I may get murdered for that last one, but more than 75% of the Nightwish Army will agree that she has made some "older" songs better, from both previous singers, Anette and Tarja. You're going to love your journey as it has just begun. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. Nightwish has only 2 other songs that top that 10:22 mark. "The Poet and the Pendulum" and "The Greatest Show On Earth", both of which you will experience waaaaay further down the road. But as lengthy as they are, all the viewers from reaction channels I've watched, complain about how fast that time went by when the songs are over. This band is THAT good! And now...
