The first time I heard this song, I liked it, up until the end. The last verse is sung in a completely different melody than before, which really made me take notice. "We will remember the suffering...," is how that verse begins, and it culminates in "...mankind, our kin... aeons ago." _Aeons ago._ At that moment, I realized this was a communication from future humans to our current selves, and I lost it. I went from liking it, to _loving_ it, to being sad about the state of the world, to being pessimistic about the future of humanity, to suddenly being overwhelmed with love. Why love, you ask? Because, just as I was contemplating this song, and feeling so dismal, my 11 year old daughter happened to come into my room and climb into my lap for some of her favorite cuddle time. Her sweet, loving face reminded me that there is hope. And _that_ is the impact music can make.

Reality check: yes, Floor can still move people to tears when she goes to THAT tone in her voice... and yes, she will do that to you however many times you listen to the song. Also, I can see why Tuomas said this song, "Procession", was central to the album. Despite the song being "different", and not even Metal (the big sin in the eyes of some straightforward Symph metal fans), it connects the dots on how it all came to be on Earth, and whither it is heading. I guess it is left to us listeners to decide if there is a silver lining... Tuomas says there is. He likes to challenge his listeners. :)) Composition-wise, this is an extremely eloquent piece, with its melody repeating in a cycle (the saddest Rondo ever?), but with each iteration, adding some new element to keep the story going. This is really a "procession" from the inception of life on our Planet (a cosmic miracle, as it were) to its feasible end. Thus the repetition makes perfect sense, reinforced immensely by the lyrics. Did you notice, how the drum beat is first introduced at the words "as along came heartbeat"? And the band first kicks in (unexpectedly jolting the listener) on "as along came Sapien" - 'cause we are the force that messed with the harmonic development of life on the planet. Also, the "smaller" but essential addition of flute and violin help to develop the melody beautifully. And the "reverse film" bit at the very end of the video ends in a close-up of what looks like a broken i-Phone screen... a vision of the Earth post-humans, perhaps? One of the deepest songs in their repertoire, despite using positively minimalist means. This is beyond genres. This is art.

Great observations. The broken screen could also be a broken mirror to ourselves, and it also appears at the beginning of the video clip. To take the "broken i-phone screen" further , it reminds me , conceptually, the final scene of the Planet of the Apes movie.

This song hits like a ton of brick, doesn't it ? This is not a song, this is a poem, a masterpiece, but a very sad one. I can't help but cry when i hear it. It's a poem, written by humans for the ones that will come after us, because we, if you'll excuse my french, "fucked shit up". Most underated song of the album, in my opinion, and one of the most powerfull messages. little nice detail of the video : the cover of the book appearing at 7:05 your video ( 3.47 original video) is the dutch edition of Darwin's The Origin of Species

@Trevor21230
@Trevor21230 3 жыл бұрын
That particular line had a real impact on me. It suggests that Evolution has an endpoint; that the Endless Forms about which Darwin wrote so many years ago will eventually lead to their own demise. Each creature is more powerful than the last, more adept at exploiting its surroundings, until there will be born a species so overwhelming in its growth that it will become a monster, and the rest of the creatures on the Earth will be unable to keep up with its voraciousness, and Life itself will be brought low before it. *We* are that species, and after all, we should have never appeared.

So haunting and so trance inducing. This is such a beautiful and sad song. The drums begin with the words "Along came heartbeat". This is a song about the history of life on Earth. How the cycle goes on as one species dies and becomes extinct and another takes its place. One of the most beautiful and thought provoking compositions I have ever experienced. Another example of Tuomas' genius. He stated that "He felt this was Floor's best vocal performance on this new record". He does everything for a reason. This song was very understated to keep the attention on the lyrics and vocal melody which is almost like a mantra being repeated over and over. Almost like a religious chant or Gregoria chant to focus the mind on something spiritual. In this case understanding how we as humans impact all life on Earth and the impermanence of all living things. One of the most fascinating aspects of this song is how it switches between "We" & "They" in the lyrics. "They" seems to be US or the living creatures on Earth before we came along. But just who is "We"? We are, singers of the gone - Who are the singers of the gone? We remember, as along came life - Who is we before life came along - Akashic memory? We are, we were, and will not be - a statement about impermanence We remember, as along came acorn - once again remember before trees and flora? We held our breath, as along came suffering We remember, father Pikaia - the first invertebrate Gave the way, as along came Sapien - finally US Then they saw the moon, and found caring - Now "They" must be referring to humanity We remember, as along came writing After all, we should`ve never appeared - Who should have never appeared? - Humanity? They understood, as along came wisdom - Humanity finally understands its affect on all life on Earth? We have been here a while At the end of Pi, as along came harvest - Pi - a metaphor for forever - harvest alluding to the earlier song about death or the end of a cycle. We will remember all the suffering - Who remembers? We wrote this in a tongue you will understand - Who wrote this? Words and melodies with a touch of coloring We were there and will remember mankind - Who was there and what relationship is there to them and mankind? Our kin Aeons ago
@everdreamcosplay
@everdreamcosplay 3 жыл бұрын
I think the We is a reference to whoever/whatever species comes after mankind... ratkind from Dawkins's work or similar, after mankind has driven itself to extinction. They "should've never appeared", but did because of our poor choices. They learned and remembered all that had gone before. It is up to us to gain wisdom and prevent this from happening, but whether or not we will remains to be seen.

I understand those who were disappointed, since it's the most singular album from the band and it's the one getting the most further from the 'symphonic metal' sound that Nightwish was better known for. IMO is sort of the natural evolution of Nightwish while keeping its essence.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it 🥰 I think the message was in the main role on this one, and structure and repetition underlines the message. Some say it’s preachy, but I think Tuomas has earned the right to be preachy. And the message is so very important. Harvest will come for us all if we continue on this path of destroying our habitat, this planet. 😰

I agree with everything you said! However, I am not one of those who think this video (or song for that matter) is preachy. What the music video does is stating the facts: several species are close to extenction. That’s all. It does not even tell us what to do, it just informs how things are at the moment. I find it funny and weird how people feel that sharing facts is preaching. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Some other songs on the album are a bit preachy, though. 😏

This song to me seems like a case of lyrical theme and music going hand in hand to convey the story. The melody doesn't change, but evolves to become more instrumentally complex, as the lyrics progress through the ages of evolution. The melody changes near the end, as the lyrics move past our extinction and it becomes clear that the story of the procession is told by those who come after us. Quite a hopeful notion that there will be something after us. For some contrast, have a go at "Everybody Dies" by Ayreon, the most upbeat song about the apocalypse and mass extinction ever! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6dxi9eGybObqHk.html

I cried with you my man! Two more to go and then the instrumental album. Can't wait to see your reaction to Tribal! It will certainly catch you off guard. :) After you are done with Nightwish (this album at least!), we fans highly suggest you checking out a band called Epica. After Nightwish they are pretty much the second biggest and best symphonic metal band out there. Insanely complex compositions and instrumentation! They use and abuse of choirs. Ask us for suggestions before reacting cause their catalog is huge!

I went out loud "Oh!" when i saw that you hav made a video from this song. I knew it right away you will get this.. Understand and Feel the ❤️ of the song. "First song writen from this album and hardest and also the Best Floor's volcal" - Tuomas H.

36 lines. And Tuomas achieves more than most authors in 300 pages. To me, this is the epilogue of The Greatest Show on Earth. My interpretation: The singers of the gone is a lifeform that advanced from mankind aeons ago. They are travelling through the universe and through time ("spaceship earth through the fields of time") and face extinction themselfes ("we will not be"). My guess is, the entire universe is about to crunch ("at the end of pi", "new world in thirst of the arcane"). But in a very Nightwish way, this in not purely reason for agony, but also for hope. Just like the story of life on earth and mankind, they are remembering. Some lines Tuomas gives us to walk within his poetry: "The living lie, dead afraid." This could mean so many things. Is it, that we humans are lying down on the floor (no pun intented, but isn't christmas the time for wishes?) to get some cover because we are so frightened? Is it that fear that prevents us from standing tall, making the most of life? Or is Tuomas talking about the fundamental lie of life - to be afraid of death? Tuomas will never tell, because thinking about his art (to him) is more important than to figure out what exactly he meant when writing lyrics. Another example: "After all, we should've never appeared." Many read into this, that mankind itself was a big failure. Because we were/are the ones that caused one of the sufferings (mass extinction on earth). I'm not so sure that this is really what's behind that line. In that part of the song, the story of mankind has been told. "Such worlds were there, zoos dead again" shows earth as a cold, dead place (gotta love Explosions in the Sky), so "After all, we should've never appeared" might refer to the singers of the gone as much as to mankind. Maybe, this closes the circle to the first suffering which pathed the way to father pikaia? Without the meteor hitting earth and destroying big parts of life, mankind would have never developed. So maybe, a lifeform that is so concious about itself and so selfreflecting was never part of the plan (and who is responsible for that plan?)? I could go on and on. Fascinating. To me, Human //:// Nature is a rather optimistic album about our world. And Procession is its center. What a wonderful piece of art.

This song is actually the heart of the whole album. According to what I hear from Tuomas it was actually the first song Tuomas wrote and finalized and thus starting the whole process of writing. According to him it is also one of the, if not, the most touching vocal performance of Floor he ever heard. You can hear him himself here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK-fhJCTtZzciac.html
