As you may know, Marco, best known as the bassist, male vocalist and secondary composer to Tuomas, has left Nightwish last year. To honour Marco, the band put out a video "The Islander" live Tampere from 2015. I believe you would love to see Marco performing alone and the band joins him later on. The atmosphere he builds just by sitting in the middle of the crowd singing and pooring his love over everyone is captivating. What a loss to us all.

And this is the song what started everything. "The Carpenter" is the debut single by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, the only from their debut album, Angels Fall First. This is the only Nightwish single to feature lead vocals by both Tarja Turunen and Tuomas Holopainen. It was performed live for the first time in over twenty years with Floor Jansen and Troy Donockley in 2018 during the Decades: World Tour. The eponymous "carpenter" referred to in the lyrics is Jesus of Nazareth, who is said to have "carved his anchor on the dying souls of mankind". The tomb of the unknown soldier refers to the centurion Saint Longinus who acknowledged the dying Jesus as the Son of God and converted to Christianity before dying a martyr's death at the hands of Tiberius. The song seems to be sung from the perspective of Saint Veronica, Mary Magdalene, or the Virgin Mary as she "lay on the grass and observed her saviour" in his final moments. The single debuted at #8 in the Finnish single chart, but peaked at #3 in the end of 1997. Tuomas: "The funny thing about Angels Fall First is that it was only supposed to be a demo to send out to record labels. But then Spinefarm heard it and thought it was perfect, so they put it out as it was with no remixing or anything. I used to be a bit embarrassed but now I can feel proud and nostalgic about those songs"

This was so good 🥰 Every Song evolves over years and it is great. Also i think NW ..Tuomas and all The rest change a bit here and there and make new arrangements from show to show on purpose. Just to give us little new treats and surprises ❤️ It keeps them and us Happy. Lazy thing would Be playing all exact same note to note ovet and over again. And they are NOT lazy ❤️❤️❤️

Of course, everyone does. They are now adults, super professionals and top guys in the music world. When they did the original they were kids. They had no clue what they were doing and final version wasn't even mixed properly. It was really cool that Tuomas chose this song to decades tour and they polished it a lot. Every journey starts somewhere and it's good we remember this song.

@@ValtteL yes so true. Every song has a beginning and it’s evident even in the beginning what a gifted songwriter Tuomas is. I’m new to the Nightwish family and have been listening to their music pretty much non stop since I found them. I’m in constant awe. They are so talented!

@@lettyalday7879 Glad you found it! Have followed this thing since '98 and there are no words to describe what they have done. From very niche garage band to world tours almost instantly. If some day you want to read about their early years, there is a book 'Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006' which tells quite accurately everything. It's kinda sad in the end because all things with Tarja and Marcelo, but those early years are so insane. I'm not sure if it is easy to find, but anyway, just let you know.

@@ValtteL thank you! I’ll look for it. I’ve been watching documentaries, interviews, videos, you name it. I grew up with a lot of different genres of music and eventually found metal in my younger days and have listened to it since. I also raised my kids on metal and they attend a lot of concerts with me as well. But I had never heard of symphonic metal before and when I heard Nightwish I was instantly hooked. I’ve been so entranced by their music. I can’t wait to one day see them live. This tour they didn’t come to Texas but next time I’ll travel to the closest venue if I have to ❤️

@@lettyalday7879 It was very good move that they started to document things from early on. Documentaries are great and interviews with Tuomas or Floor are always very interesting. Tuomas' Scrooge project also is phenomenal. At least someone is raising kids right way - that's awesome to hear 😀 The whole Nightwish and US thing has pissed off everyone for a long time. There are many reasons why it has been slow thing but i think the biggest difference just is how in US radio play is so important part of the business and in europe bands think more about live shows and they dream about those big, bombastic concerts. It's very good thing that reaction channels reach the US people so well. My music taste before Nightwish was Metallica, Iron Maiden, power metal and film music. Mom and aunt really tried to get me into opera and that kind of stuff because i always loved those orchestral instruments but it was always little bit off. Later on it came clear that i don't like normal opera singning but if someone sings opera (like Tarja) and there's heavy music, i really love it. Late 90s i was just lucky to be in a right place in a right time when Finlands music scene transformed completely. Nightwish and Children of Bodom came and that was it basically for me. Those two are my all-time favourite bands. Have you listened any Epica or Within Temptation? Of course you have to see Nightwish live, this is our generations Queen. When they start their next world tour from Finland, i'll go. Have to send spies to find out what the biggest show is. I hope it's Tampere again - i love to visit that city.

I think Tuomas was raising his wine glass to Troy to toll his respect to him which he really deserves. Musician and singing and mastering from all of them. The addition of Troy to the team at the same time as Floor permanently joined was, from my point of view, the complete rebirth of this band. They were good before but these two were the missing elements to make this band complete. It is so sad that Marko had his depression and attention disorder and had to stop doing big shows and tours. I just saw his mos recent interviews were he shared all his feelings and issues. I think watching this interview showed how hard it was for him and most probably harder for the band. Loosing a brother to such nasty feelings and depression. However he looked way better than before and as he said his medication and sessions with the psychiatric helped as it seems. 🙂 I can understand that Tuomas is happy as he then had the possibility to write whatever he wants and he knows he has 3 singers to choose from. Like he did here. They changed a lot on the old songs for this tour. You should also have a listen to Comve cover me from the same show. All 3 voices together, they blend so good.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftqcpNOQqtLWdJ8.html Troy und Empu discussing their dual bridge version during the show, haha what a band

No-one ever seems to smile or even 'get' Troy's ironic intro (ie being a big hit in China at the time)! Maybe it is the dry sense of humour us Brits have? Anyway, this is better for a stronger male vocal (not Tuomas) and the softer, less operatic interpretation from Floor. It is a song of it's time (96/97) and probably belongs there toot!
@ValtteL
@ValtteL 2 жыл бұрын
I get that. Brits and Finns have same kind of humour. One of the reasons why Troy is a good fit for the band. I think it was Finnish interview where Tuomas told how they have introduced Troy to many Finnish sketch series and how much he loves it. Finns absolutely love Monthy Python (and many others) and that kind of silly, smart and many times very dry humour.

Well, if it helps: I`m laughing my ass off every time😄 This song was apparently written in China in the late 17th century. Nowadays he introduce Nemo as a song that was written in the 1870`s😂..I`m from Norway and we have always loved British humor here.🤘

I do think this is better sang with Troy than with Tuomas. Have you seen the Tarja and Scorpions collaboration? If you haven't, you should definitely react to it. The song is called The Good Die Yound. It is beautiful song. There are few live versions. I recommend to you the version from the German TV show. The other version I've seen has a abad audio and Tarja's microphone brakes halfway through. Even though you can still hear her voice even without the microphone.
