This game is all about getting permanents, aka corners and then borders, since if you just take everything, you just get baited, your opponent steals the border, slowly wraps around the field, and slowly jus takes over the board. Even when I first played, without any idea of strategy, getting a piece on the corner before my opponent was my #1 priority; granted I lost to the cpu like a dozen times back then since I didn't know anything else. (I'm also fairly sure kuzuha could have won, if he had dropped one higher 3:11 and just dedicated the rest of the game to shutting down any border shenanigans kanae tries to set up)

Once he got the first corner it was all over.

In Othello you have to cover all 4 sides (no diagonal) of a stone to capture it. In Reversi, you can do diagonal and it only takes two.

From what i keep finding, Othello and Reversi are the same, difference being that Othello is whats being played in the video, since apparently othello allows the game to continue even if the one player cannot make a move, while reversi is supposed to end the match if a player is unable to make a move (forced to pass)

No, that's actually one of neutral tactic, though he missed it later on 3:14 , which make he can't take Kanae's piece and by that giving the right top place to Kanae

basically you need to "sandwich" (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) the other player , so you can flip them to your color. You'll have to pass if this is not possible
