This is best Purnaga Alaap (Alaap, Jod and Jhala) anyone has ever played for Raga Hemant in the history of this universe... This is simply just ...(sorry loss of words!!)

I am an African, but went to school in the UK, with many Indians as friends and classmates. I was introduced to Sitar music, which I have grown to like very much. Nikhil Banerjee is my favourite.

How is possible 10 fingers can make such a heavenly music? I believe the Holy Spirit was running through his earthly body while he was playing such an amazing melody. No one in his time, before, and after could or can play sitar like Pandit Nikhil Banerjee.

It's not music, it's God's own voice. All our frivolities melt away in this bliss.

I first bought this record in 1969 or 1970 and it forever changed my life. I had never heard anything like it and I was instantly a devotee for life. I was fortunately able to study with him from 1974 through the late 70's and it was the greatest honor to sit and listen to him practice. And the greatest loss of my life was when he died so young in 1986.

If I am not wrong, then you are the same Paul who appears in Steven Baigel's film on Nikhil Banerjee - "That Which Colors the Mind". Thank you for sharing your story. :)
@pauldresher20075 жыл бұрын
Yes, same Paul. I probably said something similar in an interview for the film. I just wish that film could be finished and shown to the world.

Thank you for sharing this with us Senior Paul , can you please tell us what was the most remarkable thing about him ?
@pauldresher20074 жыл бұрын
@@VoidEmperorX Maestro Banerjee was a remarkably humble person who was totally devoted to music. He never used his incredible virtuosity for displays of his extraordinary skills but only for reaching deeper into the music itself.

Since Nikhil Banerjee died, I keep hoping he will be reborn; maybe there will be a new sitar player as great as he was, who I can hear before I die. But it hasn’t happened, no matter how much I wish it were so. He was the greatest I have heard, really unlike all others, inimitable and sublime, otherworldly, and, I think, more important than everything else, the most *gentle.* That is the word and the idea he communicates to me most strongly. We are so lucky we live in an age of recordings so we can still hear him.

This is the effect of Baba' s realized soul which created the raga and Nikhil Kaka' s tapasya that rendered it like it has been done. Nothing can beat this combination.
