Alright guys, a couple days late but our second Temple of the Dog song. 🙂
Let me know what I should put in the poll for their last round (at the moment!) in the poll this week.
Comment 🤦🏻‍♀️ if you read this to know I'm acknowledging that I forgot to post the poll in my little "pop it in here" movement. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Chris was 26. This song is dedicated to Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone. He and Chris were very close friends. Andy died from a heroin overdose at the age of 24. This touched Chris deeply.

Mother Love Bone had guitarist Stone, bassist Jeff and singer Andy Wood (members pertinent to our story). Their debut major label album was about to be released in March 1990. Andy was either celebrating or medicating his fear and overdosed on heroin. The band obviously imploded; Stone and Jeff weren’t sure if they would even play music anymore. Chris wrote those two songs for Andy and that summer asked Stone and Jeff to record them, hopefully to help them all thru their grief. The demos inspired Stone to write again and to think about a new band. They were looking for a vocalist. A friend (former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons) suggested a singer/surfer guy living in San Diego (from Chicago) named Eddie Vedder. Stone and Jeff sent him the instrumental demos of 3 songs and Eddie listened to them while surfing. He sent back his vocals and a few weeks later he was invited to Seattle to jam. While the new band, Mookie Blaylock, (with old friend Mike McCready) jammed and recorded during the day, Chris invited them to record the project that became Temple of the Dog overnight. (Temple of the dog is a song lyric from the Mother Love Bone song “Man of Golden Words) Mookie Blaylock eventually changed their name to Pearl Jam and released their debut album a year later. Chris and Matt reunited with their Soundgarden bandmates and Badmotorfinger released around the same time.

I grew up in Tacoma in the 90’s when grunge broke out I was 17 and Seattle was our playground. We could go to Seattle and hit 5 or 6 clubs. The off ramp and the fire house along with The central where I got to Nirvana for the 1st time. My friends brother was the original drummer for green apple quick step so got to hang with a lot of bands. High school class mate is now Mike McCready‘s engineer to this day.

Killing it Nikki. "Grunge rock" was basically a name coined by music magazines at the time, either NME or Rolling Stone, to describe this new wave of raw rock to emerge in Seattle. It doesn't mean anything in the end. I mean the first mob of bands to emerge like Nirvana, The Melvins, Soundgarden, Mudhoney -- all sounded pretty different. The one style tying their sound together was metal and punk rock (Nirvana especially were hugely influenced by 70s/80s punk and new wave) Soundgarden always sounded to me like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Kurt Cobain and Krist Noveselic always said they resented the name Grunge, they just thought of themselves as punk. At the other end of Seattle were Stone Temple Pilots who had an almost Country influence. Oh, and the gravely "yowling" vocals was another thing tying them together. This singing trend became so popular by the mid 1990s that labels purposefully nurtured other groups to sing like Kurt and Eddie Vedder... Bush, from the UK, pretty much a Seattle wannabe band, cashed in on the craze, then came...shudder, Nickleback Lol

The song Would by Alice in Chains is reported to have been inspired by Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. MLB was the beginning of Grung and you should check them out. Basically 80's hair metal one day and MLB killed it day one of the 90's. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana were all part of that wave and put Seattle on the music map once again.

Temple of the Dog was essentially the Pearl Jam band minus Eddie Vedder, with Chris as lead singer. It was a tribute band for Chris' best friend Andrew Wood who died from a heroin overdose. His band was Mother Love Bone which had Steve Gossard and Jeff Ament in it, of Pearl Jam fame. There was no bad blood because Matt Cameron and Chris were already in Soundgarden. Mother Love Bone was a grunge band but Andrew Wood had more of an 80s rock band vocal. Well worth checking out.

Mike McCready ended up in Pearl Jam with Stone and Jeff who had been in Mother Love Bone with singer Andrew Wood. Chris had written some songs that sounded different from Soundgarden, including some about Andy after he died and Mother Love Bone broke up. He asked Jeff and Stone if they wanted to record this music as a tribute to Andy and they brought in Mike on lead guitar and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden to play drums. Jeff and Stone had just gotten Eddie Vedder to join in to start a new band with them and he happened to be in the studio with them when they were trying to record Hunger Strike and it wasn’t going well. Eddie jumped in and it turned into a duet. He only sang on 1 song. The rest of the guys were Temple of The Dog who only put out the one tribute album to Andrew Wood. The other guys then became Pearl Jam. Man that was wordy.

I agree with you on most of this, but as a long time Candlebox fan, I think that they have better songs in their library than Far Behind. Don't get me wrong, I love the song, but I feel like it has been a bit over played while better songs get no attention. For me, Sometimes is my favorite of their older music, but out of the music they have released in the last few years, I would recommend Riptide (the acoustic version is incredible).
