I spent my first few days with Nikon's new super-zoom lens with it attached to the Z8 camera body, and capturing various images, while getting a feel for its ergonomics and performance. Here is my first look.

I'm still waiting on mine but can you tell me what the diameter of the lens hood is? I want to order a slip on filter for the eclipse next year.

I think it's 92mm

Are you looking for the diameter at the front edge of the hood? The front element/filter size is 95mm so it will be larger than that. Happy to measure it once I know where you want it measured.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm looking for the outside diameter of the lens hood. My plan is to use a filter that just slides on the outside of the lens hood that can be quickly removed at the moment of totality without having to try to unscrew a threaded filter. @@KnightsandWeekends

@@ronawood curious what type of filter you are looking at for the eclipse. Last time I used a cheap film cover like you would have on eclipse glasses but looking to do better this time?

I knew some would want it (and complain if I didn't) and some wouldn't (and complain if I did) - so I used it some of the time but not all of the time. FWIW, I'm working on the wildlife photography topic with it and not using a TC.

Why doesn’t Nikon include an Arca-Swiss foot on every lens with a foot? It’s not that they have their own proprietary system competing against AS systems. That baffles me

After deleting my comment, once again...1/500s is tooooooo long time for 600mm on a 46MPx sensor - IF handheld. Try at least 1/1000s, or the tripod. Hopefully, you will not delete my comment this time...

Here was my original reply: I don't really agree, although I understand your point. In the real world I often have to shoot slower than that, handheld. With a non-moving subject 1/500th should never be a problem unless you've just had a full pot of coffee. The stabilization of the Z8 paired with Z-series lenses is phenomenal. But, as I stated, I was not conducting lab tests - just real world first evaluation. I don't discount your point of view, I just chose a different direction with this.
