I'll be totally honest, I found the 2nd semi-final to be rather boring to the point I fell asleep and it wasn't until Voyager came on that I actually woke up, one of the best entries this year no doubt, I'm glad Portugal finally gave their 12 points to an artist that brought something new and original, and with no political interest. Iceland gave 12 points too and right reasons so. This year Eurovision Contest end up stupid battle between Finland Nd Sweden and seriousky neither of those two shouldn't be that high. Tattoo is nothing special, Loreen is a great artist though no question abot that. Kaarija's " song " is a pure grab and he cannot sing one note also Kaarija is a racists and supports Putin's war against Ukraine. I do know that about Kaarija having myself Finnish relatives. Finland YLE silenced all media telling the truth about Kaarija after he won UMK but there was in Finnish news about him being Russian side and him following right wing racist politics .

@@chiasanzes9770 I don't know about Kaarija's political views, if that's true, that's a shame, but if I were to purely judge the songs and charisma of the performers alone then he definitely should've won. Cha cha cha may not be nothing too musically fancy, but it is the embodyment of what Eurovision stands for. Plus it is a fusion of genres you barely see nowadays, so it is original, innovating and catchy AF. To me, the one to win Eurovision, should be the one to bring a song that is groundbreaking at multiple levels and not necessarily the one that's a better singer. Voyager and LOTL were also pretty amazing and they both deserved top 10 at least.

It's great that Eurovision is now a platform where you can introduce a large audience to various kinds of metal. Similarly, I hope that metal fans will also see Eurovision as a platform to experience non-metal (and non-pop) music like the Flamenco drone from Spain or the ultra French song from France.

Not to ruin both of your ideas of Voyager being the first to perform a metal breakdown on eurovision, but AWS from Hungary pulled it off in 2018 with the song Viszlat Nyar (Rest in Peace Örs). EDIT : sorry for mentioning this again, seems chat was already on it while I was done typing ;) Loved this podcast ! Danny sounds like a wonderful guy able to enjoy every moment, that is so nice to see. Also it makes me feel better as a metalhead that always had this guilty pleasure of Eurovision, I knew I wasn't alone but feels good to hear a metal performer talk about Eurovision like this.

I am so happy that chat mentioned it, because I often feel like AWS does not get enough credit for what they did. I was rooting for them in 2018 and it's still my favourite Eurovision song ever (although I have to say that Promise is now in my personal 2nd place). Sometimes I wonder - did people forget about Viszlát Nyár just because it was in Hungarian? The trend of national languages appreciation started few years later, so they were too early for that. Or people were not ready for this, because we needed Måneskin to win first... Anyway, I love the fact that we had Voyager and Lord of the Lost this year and I hope we will have more rock and metal on Eurovision in the future. 😊

I’m so happy there are metalheads who appreciate and love Eurovision even if there isn’t always metal present - I was delighted to find out how much Voyager (and Danny especially) are fans of Eurovision and how much they knew about the previous acts! I have a bias towards the contestants who really know their stuff and love the contest, the ones who are just in it for the followers are generally quite bland but the ones who really genuinely appreciate the contest are the most grateful and happy to be there. Metal and heavy music isn’t generally my thing but I thought Voyager and LotL were AMAZING and I ended up really enjoying AWS too in their year (rest in peace Örs 😔) so I support the idea that Eurovision is a great gateway for people to experience new music that they wouldn’t normally listen to or try. Also I had a similar experience to Danny as a huge fan; sitting there in the arena watching live in a position I literally never thought I would ever get to be in (a Brit sitting in a live UK-hosted Eurovision!) - I caught myself a number of times just appreciating the moment and taking it all in 🥲 Oh and the crowd as far as I saw were respectful of Loreen’s win and didn’t keep chanting but outside the arena especially at Käärijä’s sauna bus there were people commiserating and also just celebrating Cha Cha Cha still. It was awkward for us too when the chants were happening, it felt disrespectful in a way!

I was a Eurovision fan as a kid before I got into metal. I do remember the "how can you like Eurovision when you're a metalhead?" until Lordi rocked up to the stage and the following year in Finland they had Apocalyptica playing during the interval. Lordi really kicked that door wide open for those brave enough to submit rock and metal tracks after that. Credit to Loreen too because she helped to up the game for more "serious" entries coming forward. The standard of songs now are far higher than in the early 90s when I was watching Ireland win again and again and introducing us to Riverdance. Australia have played a huge part in upping the game too. So having one of my favourite bands actually appear in a contest I was ribbed for loving for years was just epic! I'm also loving that three artists I've been banging on about for years are all mentioned in here: Voyager, Sleep Token and Neurotech. I think I picked up the last Voyager album and the first Sleep Token albums about the same time in 2019 and played BOTH to death and Neurotech I played on the student radio rock/metal show I co-hosted 10/11 years ago on a number of occasions. We even did an around the world show with a different metal artist from each country and I said I'd love to hear Wulf playing at Eurovision because his music I think catches my ear as more than just metal because it has fantastic melodies within it. Someone already mentioned in the comments about Nightwish going forward for Finland and they were turned down (what a missed opportunity!) but there have been a range of rock and metal and Iceland flung in some industrial with Hatari and I felt Luke Black this year for Serbia took that forward though a less aggressive side to that, there was definitely a later NIN feel to his track. You have to keep an open ear in Eurovision for some absolutely brilliant tracks in a variety of genres which definitely has become a lot more diverse. Estonia had a country song last year which was pretty good too. You definitely need to watch some of the madness of the pre-parties on the lead up even if you don't do a round up of the finals next year :)

Not only Estonia, The Netherlands has been notorious for sending country songs before Duncan Laurence, I think starting from 2014 with The Common Linnets and their song "Calm After The Storm" (also, DISREGARD NETHERLANDS 2012 😭). Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys both Eurovision and rock music, though mine is more on alt rock/pop rock. Eurovision really broadens my music taste, and it made me appreciate traditional European music or songs that are fused with traditional European folk music that some countries sent for the past years (e.g. Ukraine 2020/2021, Moldova and Albania 2023, Bulgaria 2013, etc.).
@CatAndBearone
@CatAndBearone Жыл бұрын
@@screemingslay5415 you're right. There really has been a lot of diversity across the various countries. I just wish the juries were more open to that. I used to work in a record store and that really broadened my horizons (especially since I was put in charge of the "specialist music" section). Found a lot of folk and world music I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

Loved listening to Danny and the interview itself. I loved the natural conversational vibe. I saw one recently with another favourite band of mine which came across stilted Q and A based. As a eurovision fan (tier below superfan), I was super impressed with this year's line up - Voyager gave me life! Super sad the voting didn't line up with audience appreciation - as you say you had to vote for the favourite to win for them to get the glory rather than voting for who you enjoyed most. Lastly I was so interested to hear about the BTS, especially the phoney camera - that puts Voyagers voting announcement into perspective. I felt sorry for them before in a laugh behind hand kind of way but now I feel really sorry that BBC did that to them - but I never understood "all publicity is good publicity"/meme culture

Thanks for the great interview. Voyager is one of my big winners from ESC 2023. They served so much quality in every aspect and even elevated the "look and feel" of their official music video with the stunning staging in Liverpool. I was not expecting that. Comparing their performance with our german entry Lord of the Lost, it's not a surprise they ended up much higher on the scoreboard. Their presentation was just on a very different level and "Promise" was composed with ESC (staging) in mind. LOTL instead simply took a song from their last album, because they jumped very late into our national selection. This huge difference in terms of preperation and "ESC instinct" is one of the main reasons why Australia did so much better with their rock/metal song. Props to Voyager and the whole australian team for their great work 👏👍🤘

Voyager, Sleep Token and Neurotech are literally my go to artists when I'm picking out tunes with friends when we shove music on.

I think the audience is bigger than what is calculated. It's an event with a lot more people per TV than other programs. To a certain degree, they are not waiting for the genera of music they like. People is more open during Eurovision. Maybe you see a puppet turkey and it becomes your favourite show and you don't listen or like anything similar during the rest of the year.

That's so true. Around eurovision season I listen to cool eurovision stuff and fall back to my different favourite genres during the rest of the year. I have a playlist where I just put everything that I listen to regardless of genre/mood/... and it's obvious which songs were put there during esc lol

I enjoyed this interview. I have known Voyager for over ten years, and it was a happy surprise to know they are representing Australia in ESC. Have not listened to them in a while, but Promise was solid. A good Voyager song, but perhaps not really a good song for ESC at this point of ESC history. Seems like the juries still are not so ready for metal, at least not progressive metal, although hard rock has already won. Sympathies from Funland. Cha cha cha.

I did smile with the top two as Kaarija breaks out of a wooden crate, while the Loreen looked like she was trying to get out of a waffle maker or find a switch to the sunbed! Yet Danny simply hops out of a Toyota MR2 and rocks it!😃

@@susanashcroft2674 Käärijä breaking the box is a metaphor of a person getting out of his/her shell. What is the metaphor for Loreen getting out of a waffle maker? Not wishing to get a tattoo? Voyager song was just pure fun, as well, and hitting the road. It was a voyager after all.

What Danny says about how people voted is true for a lot of people. Even though I had Australia 2nd, all of my voting budget went to my no. 1 because I just couldn't take the risk that a "missing" vote from me would mean that he didn't get my country's real 12 points. 😬 It doesn't quite work like that of course, if I had given Finland 19 votes instead of 20 he would probably still have had our real 12. 😄 🤣 But that's the mindset of a lot of voters I think. It's all votes on the favourite, and no one else gets anything. And as much as I hate Finland not winning overall, they got my country's real 12 (and surprisingly, also our fake jury 12), so I can feel slightly less ashamed of that at least. 🙂 Real 12's = televote 12's. Fake 12's = rigged jury 12's.
@ecenbt
@ecenbt Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but this is exactly the reason why so many amazing acts (like voyager) got so little points from televote and couldn't get the love they deserved from the viewers. This is also why there are now landslide televote results and televote is equally "rigged" this way. Like, sorry to burst your bubble but finland didn't get "all the public vote" because so many people liked them, but it's because the people who were committed enough to vote gave all their 20 points to 1 act. I fail to see how this is any more fair than the jury voting for one act due to hype or whatever
@nian60
@nian60 Жыл бұрын
@@ecenbt Not sure what you mean by "burst my bubble", when the public favourite got 18 real 12's and the "winner" got zero real 12's. You need to be very popular to get 18 real 12's. And to have a "winner" with ZERO real 12's, that has to be the worst result ever. Have we ever had a winner that was so bad that they got no real 12's, since the televotes started? Other than that weird comment from you the only solution is to remove the juries, or drastically reduce their power. Because the public knows that the only chance to override the juries is to vote hard for the favourite. So even if you want to vote for more than one song, you can't. Unless you can spend an obscene amount of money. And since the corrupt juries can cancel out the public favourite anyway, why spend any money at all? This year was the last time I watched or voted anyway. I'm not going through this year's horror show again, or wasting any more of my money.

46:59 Btw it is incredibly political. The jury vote was brought back in 2009 to stop the results from being skewed as countries were voting for their close allies/neighbours. Finland REALLY wanted to win this year and basically no televotes from Finland went to Sweden. And the Swedish media, even though they won, started spouting a lot of bullshit about how Finland was "once a part of Sweden" and that Finland didn't vote for Sweden because Finns are jealous of Swedes. It got ugly. Also the fact that Russia is banned from the competition because of the Ukraine Invasion, but Israel is a competitor and continues to do well? 🤨

The Finns didn't vote for Sweden because the Swedish song was sh*te, and they have some taste. Meanwhile, us here in Sweden voted for Finland since the majority of the Swedish public recognised that Cha Cha Cha was the song that should win. And weirdly, our usually useless jury also voted for Finland.

@@rvoloshchukify why would you want Israel banned from ESC? While a large percentage of Jews that have immigrated from Russia, it doesn’t make them equivalent to Putin, nor should Putin’s actions taken against Ukraine be transferred upon Russian people who are against the invasion into Ukraine. Additionally I’m sure you are aware that Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself is Jewish and supports Israel and it’s people. It’s clear as to why Belarus and Russia are not invited to participate in ESC, however, I’m curious as to why do you think Israel should not be able to participate in ESC? Is it because you think Israel support Russia’s invasion or is sending troops or weapons to the Russians? As a strong US and EU ally, it’s certainly not the case.

That about metal heads change is true. I'm into metal since my teens and I usually try not to show it. (I was afraid of being put in to the box or scaring off some ppl.) Im a girl and its quite unpopular in Poland and here we have many stereotypes and preconceptions about metal people. We are still one leg in the past but it is slowly passing. Generally, Its just not my thing to scream at loud my preference. All music is great - from classical to rap. All is gud. X3 Personally I liked "Cha cha cha" for its mix of hard rock and rap. First time I saw it it was: What?! And now I'm a fan of a rapper. Peliä! ... LOL I used to hate rap. Don't be judgmental about the genres and closed in comfy frame. It great to have a taste but keep your ears and heart open! Explore all there is! Enjoy music and share it with the world. :)

As a Eurovision sceptict sicne childhood, this was the year I couldn't avoid it and ended up watching. Ridiculous amounts of talent on stage, the quality compared to the 80's, 90's and 00's was insane. And between Voyager, Loreen and Käärijä there was at least 3 contestants that would have all been able to win any other year. Almost sad that all these top entries ended up running against each other but it really became a great show, even to me. And it introduced me to Voyager which is how I ended up here.
