Totally agree with Nerdcity on the getting help if you hear someone screaming thing. I used to live in a bad neighbourhood and I was pretty close with my downstairs neighbours. They once called the cops in the middle of the night to come check for domestic violence since they thought they had heard some suspicious sounds and crying upstairs. It turned out that it was their nextdoor neighbour and not me though. They were having a party and someone fell and hurt themself. The downstairs neighbours apologised to me for the whole situation, but I was actually so thankful that they had called the cops in case something would have been going on. It's good to know that people have your back in case something happens.
@frogbabygrill
@frogbabygrill 2 жыл бұрын
I love Colossal but I can't believe his point that he wouldn't call or help anyone if he heard anything. If no one does, then no one would help anyone in actual danger. It doesn't hurt at all to, at minimum, call the cops over to check, they're here for a reason, and could help a lot of people if something happened. And if nothing did happen, good thing no one got hurt and at least your conscience will be relaxed!

The difference is, is that this debate was between someone from then UK and someone from the US. I'm from the UK and I live on the outskirts of a village, yet even I hear people screaming and stuff down my street/tenfoot, it's always just drunk people - people drink a lot in the UK. Especially in the city, you hear it ALL the time, I've stayed at places in the city and you hear shouting/screaming _constantly_. Neighbours also argue a lot, our neighbours are always screaming at each other, it's really common. There's also the fact that there's *way* more violent crime in the US than the UK, it simply doesn't happen here as often and it isn't a population thing, so it's not something that's on people's mind as much. Nobody has a gun so home invasions are rare and 95%+ of burglars that are found just flee the scene (if found) instead of attacking/holding the home owner at gun point etc. It's rare buglars even steal from houses with people in too. Violent crime obvs happens but the stabbing rates being super high in the UK is just a stereotype, it happens but not as much as people think. I guess violent crime is pretty common in London but pretty much any time you hear someone scream they're just drunk & messing around. If I heard someone screaming for help I'd check it out but you just hear drunk people making a commotion so often you get desestitised to it and if you live somewhere where there's a bar/down a road that's close to the town centre then it's particularly true as you hear it pretty much 10-20+ times every night. It's just a cultural difference and I can see why. Even the neighbour thing they mention, people in the UK don't say hello to their new neighbours when they move in, you'd been seen as a weirdo if you did that. People keep to themselves. It's completely different in the US.
@maximusstorm1215
@maximusstorm1215 Жыл бұрын
@@frogbabygrill Colossal is English, it's more of a cultural difference than anything as opposed to him being a bad person. He even mentions it'll often just be drunk people making a commotion. My comment above this one highlights what I mean. He also makes the point that if he _knew_ someone was in danger, he'd help. Depending on where you live, you just hear people scream a lot in the UK as people drink all the time/7 days a week.
@frogbabygrill
@frogbabygrill Жыл бұрын
@@maximusstorm1215 Ah thank you! I understand now, I don't live in the US but I can understand how the place you live can affect it! Where I live, there's low crime but there's almost barely any noise during the night, so someone screaming can easily be heard and everyone would do smth about it. I'm glad I know now and that you commented!

Oh the subject of the wheat shortage. I work at a Cargill Grain Elevator in Canada and not only has the distribution of grain been slow (we have not had a foreign vessel or a local train shipment of grain since February. Which is big because that used to be a daily thing.) But it's expected that there will be no supply left come August. The branch owners are downplaying the this to the highest hells stating that this is just "a phase in the market." Blaming it on local farmers hoarding supply to make a larger profit. But its legitimately a scary thing. All of the other grain elevators within the lower half of the province have laid off up and shut down certain operations to salvage costs. So obviously they are foretelling the famine as well. Its a pretty scary sight to witness tbh when you look at the bigger picture.

I mean, it's better to have called the police and find out it was just something harmless than letting someone get hurt or even killed. There's this video of a girl screaming bloody murder as she's being dragged into a car and taken away, and the entire neighborhood is just standing there and watching. Afaik she's been missing ever since. It's crazy that there were so many people who saw it happening and not a single person did anything (other than whip out their phone and record it).

How on earth are you supposed to do anything about a potentially armed kidnapping other than film it and contact the police telling you got everything on tape? Running out and being a hero would likely get you shot on the spot and possibly the victim as well. 99% of the population has recieved no training at all for situations like these and would have no idea what theyre doing, which would likely just make everything worse.

I absolutely understand not calling the police when you hear a scream, because it could be anything. But the problem with that is that I got assaulted in my old apartment, and kept screaming for help, for hours, and no help came. Also I witnessed a case of bystander effect that was so insane to me, this old man fell, and was disorientated in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, and a truck was coming, bunch of people were watching, and no one helped until I ran up to help. So I don't know how I feel about this.

Staple crops like wheat, corn or potatoes represemt a huge part of most people's caloric intake. If there is a shortage in one it puts pressure on other food sources as people seek alternative food sources for their calories. This creates food shortages if staple crops fail. You can stop eating bread but so does everyone else. Now you have a bunch of people eating corn or potatoes as am alternative putting pressure on a market that usually only produces so much to meet the previous demand. Yeah more can be grown but you are limited by the grow times of these alternatives plus the seasons they are grown in.

Just finished the podcast, it was great. You have a lot of chemistry between you, and in a way I couldn’t find that in other podcasts (for example, Baited). I wanted to clarify something about the grain part because I know a bit about it (not really like you average African farmer but about enough to know the extent of the subject at hand). I study geography as a subject in high school. One of the subjects is of course agriculture. One of the biggest things we go over is how most plantations need a good sustainable amount of rainfall, and good temperatures and how fragile a crop can be. The biggest piece of data we talk about is that dry, arid countries like the ones in the Sahara desert and the near-Asian steppes (Turkey and the -Stan countries) can only grow wheat with the measly amounts of rainfall they get. Literally only wheat. Some countries like Ethiopia have a bit of a better climate and they can grow apples and other crops but countries like Egypt and Libya and Saudi Arabia will have serious food shortages and famines worse than their current situation. It’s a common misconception that you just need to water the crop consistently for it to grow vegetables and fruits and the such, but climate and rainfall and ground quality and fertilizer and more variables are very critical to the growth of plants. Most people in developed countries have no idea about this because they don’t study geography and their country isn’t a dry desert that can’t grow anything, usually your average rich country can grow a lot of stuff that isn’t tropical fruits (they need a ton of rainfall, literally tropical rainforest rainfall to survive), so the general consensus knows nothing or not much about this (usually it’s different geographical effects like the current California dry season that is limiting the water supply). Cheers!

So interesting talk of the bystander effect, and the case nerd was talking about was kitty Genovese's murder, but this is more of a pop-culture myth then an example of bystander effect Many of the residents actually called the police (despite journalists claiming otherwise), and a woman actually went out and comforted Kitty while she was dying, trying to provide aid until the police could get there. Journalists also claimed hundreds watched the murder, but many of those hundreds claimed they didn't hear anything, or that they thought there was a reasonable explanation (ie. someone playing a loud movie). The bystander effect is certainly a real phenomenon; for instance if I see someone getting robbed I may not have time to stop and help, I may not want to get involved for fear of reprisal, or I may just believe that I do not know the full story here or do not have the power to do anything. But it's still overstated, especially when kitty genovese's murder is brought up as an example
