The first law of thermodynamics means this is a non starter. Generating green H2 is always very energy intensive, then you need to pressurise it, and transport it. Moving electricity in wires and storage in batteries is way more energy effective. Still fuel companies love this concept it gives them a product to sell

Love the cab over design... so much shorter but still good room inside. Truck seems very well done for a prototype... There are already two types of licence.. One for automatics, the other for manual. One thing about the manual.. though. It FORCES you to stay aware of what is going on.. your speed, and conditions etc. Keeps your situational awareness very high.. it all becomes second nature quickly.. you don't think about shifting.. You just do it. But you are still connected to what is going on.

It´s a standard "IVECO Stralis" cab from Europe. Italy to be precise.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 11 ай бұрын
@@TFB-chris Interesting so they used an existing truck cab. That would definitely help them proceed more quickly. All they need do is integrate the electric powertrain and any other mechanicals related to it. And provide the instrumentation in the cab that would be required. Not saying that that's a small task. But at least it eliminates them having to deal with the basic structural stuff. The only thing I noticed in the test drive was that only the front axle is powered and I think they mentioned that it's direct drive. That could pose a problem in certain places. I often found it necessary to engage the differential lock. That engages the rear axle also. Occasionally you'll run into a dock or a roadway that is at a steep angle. And as the truck turns weight will come off one of the wheels. Unless you can lock that rear axle in you'll end up spinning one of the drive tires. Probably could mitigate this with either limited slip differential in the drive axle. Or perhaps they have two separate drive motors one for each wheel providing traction control.

@@kens97sto171 Not just the cab but most of the truck. Nikola doesn't have any experience in truck design so they collabed with Iveco to design a truck around their technology. It's essentially an European Iveco S-Way with Nikola's battery pack. Electric motors were co-developed with Iveco as well.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 11 ай бұрын
@@sic22l Well that explains why it's so complete smooth and well made. Honestly I think Tesla bought to think about doing this too. The variety of different types of trucks in the United States is rather extensive. I often think that Tesla along with making their own truck, should offer the powertrain and integrated technologies to existing truck manufacturers. Let Kenworth have Tesla electric drive as one of the power plant options on their trucks. That's how it works currently. You can buy a Peterbilt or a Kenworth with a Cummins or a Mercedes or other engine choices. Along with a variety of transmissions, rear axle ratios. And all sorts of different options. Be a lot less complex for Tesla simply to make powertrain and battery packs and let the truck manufacturers that already know how to build a truck well to integrate that into their existing vehicles.

Is the Electric version a single rear drive or tandem powered ?
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 11 ай бұрын
It has a single rear drive axle, also known as a 6X2 since it has tag axle. The Nikola version in the USA has dual tires on the tag axle, making it look like it is driven unless you look closely; the IVECO version in Europe has single tires on the tag axle, making the 6X2 configuration more apparently. 6X2 with singles on the tag axle are common in Europe, but very rare here except on large buses. Yes, all that power is to one axle. Search online for FPTindustrial and their eDriveline, model "eAX 840-R", to see the electrically powered axle provided by IVECO's FPT division. The Tre BEV apparently isn't using the full peak power of this unit, presumably due to battery limitations.

The European trucks will be assembled in Ulm. Iveco has been licensed to produce everything and Nikola in exchange can use the Iveco S-way platform to produce their trucks in the USA. Very bad on marriage and family. That is the main reason I find why you g men do not want to hit the road. All EVs and hybrids have regenerative braking, and Sandy talked about the regenerative braking during his test drives in this video. Although they have regenerative braking, that is not enough; all vehicles have friction brakes (drum or disk, hydraulic or air). Like all other heavy trucks, these IVECO S-ways have air brakes. The trailer does not have any electric motors, so it only has air brakes. Much of the time, the truck will only use regenerative braking on it's one driven axle, instead of using the air brakes.

Does it have a big doghouse in the cab, as usually exists in a cabover or forward-control truck cab to clear the engine? Apparently it does not, and that would be useful and relevant thing to show and note... unlike the steering feel of a completely normal heavy truck chassis which won't feel any different because of the power source. How about a comparison with the normal IVECO S-way?
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 11 ай бұрын
I found images of the interior of the S-way on IVECO's website, and even the diesel version has a flat floor. Apparently the cab floor is so high that there's no doghouse, and so the EV and fuel cell versions don't even get that as an advantage. Yes, the refrigerator drawer is in the standard S-way... the Nikola people didn't add that.

You’re thoughts on the trucker lifestyle is amusing at best. The concerns of the amount of gauges not needed in this truck is false. You still need to know things. Shifting gears is learned in a month. Electric motor will assist in controlling the vehicle, which is good. Please speak with a truck driver or two (with 10 years of experience or so). There is a lot to driving than going straight down a highway. Turning, backing, bad roads, dealing with other vehicles make up most of the downsides of trucking. I personally am interested in the future of electric trucks (hydrogen fuel cells too). They will greatly improve trucking, but not so much in the ways expressed in your video. I do enjoy many of your videos, you just hit closer to home this time.

I wish them well but the economics of H2 show this is not going to end well The only time that's going to happen is if they get H2 supplied at the same cost as ICE fuel A prime example: In the UK bus company after bus company are returning their H2 buses (even early) or pulling them from service due to them costing 300% (that vs a normal ICE bus) to run and they can break down/out of service up to 500% more vs a BE bus. And all these H2 buses are being replaced by BR buses - my local bus company has 96 BE buses on order and did not look at getting H2-powered buses I see success in the BEV of the truck esp last mile, state or tristate deliveries etc
