KEEP GOING!

Diaghilev was the man who had the vision and courage to actually put the show on. He was an impressario and the owner of the Ballets Russes dance company who virtually invented modern ballet with their productions of ballets with music commisioned from composers such as Stravinsky, like The Firebird, Petrushka and Pulchinella and designs by Leon Bakst, Picasso and Matisse. Ballets Russes was a groundbreaking amalgam of modern Art, Design, Music and Theatre. Diaghilev was a visionary of his time.

This ironically is a ballet about how humans will willingly sacrifice each other and revert to base primitive cruelty and gleefully tear each other apart but go off about how you don't like it I guess 🤷‍♀️

"Nijinsky---his face white as chalk---stood in the wings. Shouting-out the complicated rhythm. So the dancers could keep time to the music they could not hear". An eyewitness account by Gertrude Stein, who was in the audience that evening.

The dance look alright, but l suppose the standard and vision of Nijinsky was way too high for people to appreciate at that time. Enjoy watching it and will continue to do so to get into the depths of the dance. Brilliant man Vaslav Nijinsky, very sad he did not get to enjoy the fruits of his labour in the remaining years of his life.

Diaghilev was revolutionary impresario for sure but not enough to carry on with Njinsky's visionary choreography. After Rite of Spring he fired Nijinsky and hired Fokine again and went back to his old ballets, much to Nijinsky's disgust. I understand his reasons, he had to make money but that was really a shame and possibly contributed to Nijinsky's mental breakdown.

A very convincing and disturbing study in mob behaviour. Wilde and Arendt were both accurate about audiences and mobs. They are dangerous. The performance, rite, and riot is in the audience, not on the stage. I wonder how close this recreation is to the actual premier?

I regard Diaghilev as a scrupulous circus-director who exploited the mentally weak Nijinsky, starting already before "Right of Spring" with the erotic exaggeration of "Afternoon of a Faun". Their homosexual relationship was an open secret.

God awful film. IMO, the problem with the premier of Le Sacre was mainly the DANCING. It just doesn't measure up anywhere NEAR to the greatness of the music. They should have premiered the music without the ballet.

That just can't be the original ballet. At least not danced this shitty. I might have walked out too after seeing this crap danced to such great music. The audience is NOT upset about the music, but rather the dancing. They had already heard Stravinsky before many times, maybe not as wild and dissonant, but this was not new music to them. People should start accepting the fact that the audience hated the BALLET, not the music so much. I don't blame them either.

I've grown to like Nijinsky's choreography of The Rite. Of course it's not as sophisticated as the score but there's something about it's naivety that is touching and shocking. I personally feel there is a great ballet and/or music video still to come out of The Rite (Anderson and Roe come close) but none of the ballet versions have pleased me.

I've seen it danced better. That is the original choreography right enough, and of course people disliked it because it was everything ballet wasn't in their eyes. But the choreography, while a bit abstract I suppose, makes sense, at least to me, considering that it's about a primitive society and a pagan ritual. Both things considered uncivilized by society. So why shouldn't the choreography be wild? XD

One of the worst pieces ever written. Makes absolutely no sense. Just a bunch of random and repitive chords with ugly harmonies. No wonder there were riots. The Firebird and Procutshka. were somewhat better. People know good art when they see or hear it. This ain't it. And the subject matter devolves the human race. Why Stravinsky would write such garbage is beyond me. Especially seeing that he was well trained as a composer.

@saidazh5967
@saidazh5967 5 жыл бұрын
I totally disagree. While the dance itself is not really of my taste, you can't blame the music. Saying that its just a bunch of random and repetitive chords is a bit ruff don't you think? I mean in today's music a statement like that would make a bit more sense or in 12 tone music, but rite of spring isn't random at all. Yet, its not an easy listen either, so I understand your opinion somewhat, while knowing that you probably listen to vivaldi, bach or tschaikowsky and less to more modern music. (Even though Stravinsky isn't exactly modern either) For Stravinsky its not about structure or a precise form (like for example a sonata where everything is neat and steady) he has developed a totally different way of orchestrating. He is the first to use the orchestra in a percussionist way. He didn't use pretty melodies, which you could sing on even months after listening or easy counterpoints which everyone understands right away. His music is raw and confrontational. The focus lies on something else and its highly energetic and groovy. It may sound a bit chaotic, but trust me that its everything else than musically random or chaotic. Just give it another try. Maybe listen without the ballet.

Hey Pipestud3, if you hate the piece so much why are you watching it again? You moaned about "The Rite" in the comment section of the full movie. Music is very subjective: it can't please everyone. Now run along and listen to some Fauré.
