Thanks for the comparison. I'm glad I went with the 14-30 and a tracker. I could get the 20mm 1.8s also and still spend less than what the 14-24 costs. The 14-30 takes 82mm filters which is fantastic for everyday use. It's lighter, smaller, and way cheaper. So for someone that mainly does travel photography and only occasional astro, it was a better fit. I went with the Star Adventure Mini for my tracker. I liked it better than the other options.

I sold the 14-24s I bought before, and now I replaced it with 14-30s. I think the quality of the photos is not much different. The most important thing is that the filter system is now much lighter. Your video is amazing and confirms my point of view. keep it up!

Thank you very much for the interesting video. I will buy the 14-30. It has some minor weaknesses, but for the size and price, it's unbeatable. The range up to 30mm allows you to keep the lens on the camera for more than just extreme shots, which reduces the number of lens changes.

Thank you Mike. Your review is great and very valuable to many Nikon users including myself. As I read the comments, it turns out the many of us having the same "pain" when it comes to the choice among 14-24 f/2.8S, 14-30 f/4S, and 20 f/1.8S. I personally would like to have one lens for all, and 14-24 f/2.8S seems the only candidate. I used 14-30 f/4 for astra but f/4 doesn't handle some situation well. 20 f1.8 is excellent lens for astro but not so much for landscape given it being prime instead of zoom. On the other hand, though the new 14-24 f2.8 is much lighter than the its F counterpart, its filter system is still bulky. I may have to go with 14-30 f/4 and 14-24 f/2.8 but they together are too $$$! I wish Nikon like Canon and Sony can have a 16-35 f/2.8S that takes 82mm filter to solver this problem and many of us face.

Great review, great recommendation on 14-30+ tracker as well. One thing I like the 14-30 is the focal range, 30mm on the long end can save me another lens on trips, so I can leave the 35mm in the car and just hike up the mountain with one 14-30, if I do that with 14-24, I normally feel like I need the 35 as well, at least that's how I do it in the past with the DSLR version 14-24.

Thanks for the "fantastic" comparison between these great lenses Mike! ;-) I use the 14-30 f/4 on my Z8 for landscape photography (on a solid Leofoto tripod and 10 second delay for optimum sharpness), and find it to be super-sharp in the center and mid zones. That said, I would have expected the 14-24 f/2.8 to show even better center sharpness especially when stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8. The only thing I'm not crazy about on the 14-30 is that necessity to turn to lens barrel before shooting! I don't think many photographers care about this "feature" to make the lens a bit more compact for storage, as IMHO, it just delays shooting another second or two, and introduces one more function with potential to break over time.

Thank you for your very informative and interesting review. From where I sit and heading forward I'm thinking that I should purchase the 14-24 F2.8 new S lens for my Z6II. I also have the older 14-24, which my son uses and loves. The big weight difffrence is a terrific improvement, plus your reviews and comparisons show the newer lens to be sharper. No doubt the 14-30 F4, is also an excellent lens. I just do not think I would need the both of them. You really give us some detailed comparisons which are very helpful. Thank you very much.

Great review. It's funny as the I often saw that in Nikon lenses: the fastest model (e.g. 1.4) is always less sharp at the same aperture as a slower model (e.g. 1.8) - for those who remember the 20mm f1.4 vs 20mm f1.8 & co. I still have both a N300 f2.8 and N300 f4... and wide open, they have the same sharpness & (small) aberrations. However, the N300 f2.8 stopped down at f4 is indeed better than the N300 f4 but similar to the N300 f4@f5.6 ... So essentially, what you are getting is not a better image quality, but 1 stop of light, which is exactly what the title of those lenses tell you. The 14-24mm Z f2.8 will have around the same sharpness than the 14-30 f4 wide open but you do gain 1 stop of light. At f4, the 14-24 Z f2.8 will actually be better than the 14-30 f4 if only because of the way it will handle vignetting and various aberrations. In terms of sharpness, it seems the 14-30 f4 may indeed be just a little bit sharper... funnily, I had the same impression sometime when comparison N300 f2.8 vs N300 f4. But nothing that should actually make a difference for you, even in astro. So the only question to remain is: are you willing to take longer exposures ? If yes, 14-30 f4 is probably a better lens for your use case (cheaper, smaller, lighter); if no, the 14-24 Z f2.8 will provide your with more versatility in exchange for slightly heavier and (much) more expensive. Side note: I am actually disappointed / very surprised the 20mm f1.8 didn't outperform the 14-24 f2.8... The 20mm Z is still much better than the prior F version, but still.. it's a prime lens, less glass elements, simpler design.. and from f1.8 to f2.8 the 20mm was stopped down 1 & 1/3 stop compared to the 14-24 Z f2.8... What I don't know, and what this test doesn't show is about color rendition and shadow depth. Usually prime lenses have a much much better color rendition & shadow depth and you can capture incredibly smooth gradients/variations that zoom lenses usually can't.. Should the N14-24 Zf2.8 also have good color rendition & shadow depth... it could become difficult to justify a prime lens. There was not enough colors / nebulosity in your test (Orion with a longer exposure would have been perfect to see this), but it looked to me that both the stars & Orion had a little more colors indeed... if you still have them, any chance you could do a long exposure on a bright nebulosity with both the prime and N14-24 Z, if possible at same focal length ? I was planning to take the prime, but now I wonder.

This review answered almost every question I had regarding these 3 z lenses, thanks for incorporating the 20mm here. I was going to get the 20mm over either wide-angle zoom but after watching this I think I'll opt for the 14-30mm as a walkabout (for reach) and get a Rokinon/Samyang 14mm 2.8 solely for astro. I have the MSM so should be set with either the 14-30 or Rokinon there. Cost-wise this combo will still be ~$800 less than the 14-24mm 2.8 which is crazy haha. I didn't realize how nicely the 14-30mm stacked up until now, I appreciate the detailed comparison!

superb comparison for me the 14-30 is better due to extra reach, i do not use for stars the sharpness is great on both and in real life at f5.6 they are rock solid the 14-30 is much smaller/lighter/cheaper and uses standard filters. f2.8 is not a killer for me. Wonderful video well done.

Great video. I bought the 14-30 as i usually don't shoot below f8 at that focal range. I don't think the added sharpness of the z f2.8 is worth me buying/trading- BUT is distortion is significantly better, I'd probably jump at that if so. This was a great review, but the brick wall is hard for me to see distortion difference (assuming there is any). Thanks to anyone who can share their insight. P.S. i don't live in an area where astro is easily done and if i ever had the opportunity, i would use my 24-70 f2.8 if i don't buy the 14-24 f2.8.

Thanks -- so like you I own had have used the F-mount 14-24 and I own the Lee Filters SWM 150 system II for this lens. In anticipation of the imminent arrival of 2 Z9's I had recently added S-mount version of the 105m MC, 24-70 and 70-200 to my tools, but now am looking at the 14-24 S-mount. Your vid proves there are some benefits in moving to the s-mount. I assume you fully understand Depth of Focus and the fact that the In-Focus parts of an image are on a Radius from the middle of the sensor in the camera you are using. Looking at images of flat brick-walls shot from ~5m where the focus is set at the centre of the image it is NOT TO BE EXPECTED that the corners of the images would be in focus when shooting at F/2.8 or F/4.0 -- WHEREAS comparison when focusing beyond the hyperfocal distance (e.g. your star shots) is realistic. I would not buy the 14-30 -- the poor man's choice. I agree a smaller sharper lens with the added control ring is a benefit -- BUT I am pissed that Lee have not released an adapter ring for the SWMII 150 system for the 14-24 S-mount. I like many others bought into the 150mm system and appreciated it. WHY have Lee Filters only released an adapter for their 100mm system -- did they lie to us before about needing a 150mm filter for ultra wide angle lenses? Nisi is the way to go BUT for me this is a £405 decision (including a Nisi head and their awesome Circ.Pol) -- on top of the cost of the lens. I already use Nisi IR-ND drop in filters together with a range of Lee 150mm and have a large collection for use to slow down smooth moving Water - sea, waterfalls etc. I certainly do not intend to BUY any 112mm circular filters anytime soon.

Excellent review Mike! The coma/astigmatism review was what I've been waiting for someone to do for months! Now that I know it's great, I just have one question: would you rather the Laowa 15mm f/2 or the Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8 for ultra wide angle timelapse? You can't use a star tracker for that. So in other words, would you prefer the excellent coma and astigmatism control of the Nikon, even though you loose a stop of light, or would you rather have the extra stop of light (less noise), because the coma of the Laowa is shrunk down on a screen (which you watch timelapse on) anyway?
@Milkywaymike
@Milkywaymike 3 жыл бұрын
The loawa is a greats lens and really compact / light compared to the 14-24 2.8s however I sold mine for a couple of reasons. 1) I’m using unleashed trigger / app which can auto ramp time lapses and you can adjust setting from your phone during a time lapse.. this became a problem with the loawa since it didn’t communicate with the Nikon camera. I would have to manually change the aperture which caused bumps in my time lapse. MIOPS is coming out with a new trigger that auto ramps and I want to test that out as well so I need lenses that communicate with the camera body. 2) Also their were times I thought I was in focus with my loawa, but I was slightly off when I got to the computer. With Z lenses you can literally turn the camera on and the z lenses with automatically set to infinity and be in focus for the night sky. 3) Auto focus stack and a couple other features won’t work with the loawa. Now I knew this when I got the lens, however I didn’t realize how much those features meant to me until I couldn’t use them. Seeing how my loawa was primarily for my time lapse work though, it really sucked that I couldn’t auto ramp properly. If you aren’t planning to use triggers / remotes to auto ramp then the Loawa is still a great lens for time lapses. That extra bit of light helps, however I usually stop down my 1.8 or in this case my an F2 lens to F2.8 to bring back some sharpness. Reason being I make my timelapse 6K and sometimes I do a slow digital zoom in post production so in those instances I don’t downscale too much.
@bencollins7684
@bencollins7684 3 жыл бұрын
@@Milkywaymike Thanks for the comprehensive reply Mike. I have the Laowa and find that it auto ramps fine when I use Qdslrdashboard linked to my Z6. As long as I get the settings right on my Z6 (I've saved them to U3), I have no problems. If I don't get the settings right, it doesn't ramp properly. Can the new MIOPS trigger integrate with motion control? That's what put me off the Unleashed - I can't integrate it with motion control.

What are your thoughts on the vignette characteristics of the S lenses? In the night shots, both the 14-24 S and 14-30 S seem to have a much heavier vignette than the older F mount 14-24. To my eye it makes the whole image much darker. Ive wondered about this since the new 14-24 was announced bc the front element definitely appears to be a smaller diameter than the old version.
@Milkywaymike
@Milkywaymike 3 жыл бұрын
The vignette is less on the new 14-24 2.8s when you stop it down to F4 compared to the 14-30 F4. Wide open at 2.8 it is pretty heavy however I’m not to worried about vignette as it’s relatively easy to remove and sometimes a little vignette from the lens looks good!

Happy that I picked the 14-30. Was having buyers remorse before this video. Thanks! I had the old 14-24 and it was always soft in the corners..Maybe it was a bad copy. I found that I used the old 14-24 and 16-17mm or so because of the corner softness. I can see the superiority of the new 14-24 but the cost and the filter issue is a huge factor. How do you think the old version compares to the new 14-30 in the corners? I didnt notice the comparison in the video. Was it there?

Thanks for watching! The old 14-24 doesn't even compare to the 14-30s for corner to corner sharpness. Even if you stopped the older version down to F4 it is still softer than the 14-30f4

Hi Mike Thank you very much for this video. A lot of work and a lot of good informations. 🙏 I already have the Z 14-30 f4 and I'm looking for a brighter lens. I hesiging to sell the Z 14-30 and get the Z 14-24 instead. Or keep the Z 14-30 and add the Z 20mm 1.8. I already have the Z 24-70 f2.8 and Z 70-200 f2.8. I also looking to buy the Kase Wolverine Magnetic 112mm kit filter as a one filter solution thank to the Nikon lens hood hb-97 who fit on my two Z f2.8 lenses. What do you think about this situation Mike ? Thank you so much for your help.

Sell the 14-30 f4 and get the 14-24 2.8z or the 20 1.8z Both of the lenses are fantastic and the primary reason I got both of them is because I like to use the 14-24 2.8 for milky way time lapses on one camera body and the 20 1.8 for milky way still images on the other body. If you are just taking still images the 20 1.8 might be the better way to go since you can just take a pano if you need to go wider and you get extra stop of light. I need the 14mm for time lapses and the F4 was not cutting it for me at night so I had to get the 2.8.

It's very minimal and a non-issue for me in my opinion... However to play it safe you may want to rent the lens to try it first to make sure it's up to your liking. There is a MW photo taken at 20mm 2.8 in this review showing the coma. petapixel.com/2020/12/07/nikon-z-14-24mm-f-2-8-s-review-for-astrophotography/

I enjoy your content I just feel that no one is reporting about this lens at anything but the widest side, honestly from what I have seen and tested the 14-24 is a huge disappointment at 20mm and unusable and needs to be paired with the 20mm 1.8 Peace my friend and keep up the excellent work Thanks again

Oh I'm early. So I'm a landscape photographer and have the Z7 with the 14-30mm f4 s. I'm pretty sure it's sharper than the 14-24 g but the 14-24 s is a bit sharper than the 14-30 s. Ok now I'll watch the video.
@Milkywaymike
@Milkywaymike 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the 14-30 wrecks the old 14-24 2.8g and surprisingly the 14-30 F4 is nearly as sharp as the 14-24 F2.8s. It just doesn't handle stars towards the corners as good as the 14-24 2.8s.

@@Milkywaymike Definitely. Before watching this comparison vid, I was considering getting the 20mm 1.8 for astro instead of the 14-24 2.8s. It's cheaper and I don't do a whole lot of astro to justify the high price tag, but after seeing that you would need to stop the prime lens to 2.8 for it to perform almost as good as the 14-24 2.8s I'll have to re-evaluate my options. I could sell my 14-30mm f4 but I use nisi screw on filters so I'd have to invest several hundred dollars in a new filter system. Not exactly a cheap hobby 😄

Mike, what do u think having the Z 14-24mm or a combo Z 14-30+20mm?
@Milkywaymike
@Milkywaymike 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on if you are using 2 bodies or 1 in my opinion. If you are using 1 camera body then that combo should be fine since you would have a great lens for astro and a ultra wide for landscapes. In some cases I would take my foreground with the 14-30 during astronomical twilight and then take my milky way stack or track with the 20mm 1.8s and blend the 2 photos. If you are using 2 bodies like in my case, I use a Z7 for stills and a Z6 for time lapses you may want to reconsider. For time lapses I want to go as wide as possible so the 20mm while usable, is just not my preferred lens.. 14mm is since video is typically around a 16 x 9 crop and I lose a good chunk of the scene. I also do a lot of night time lapses so I need the 2.8 speed and the 14-30 f4 doesn't cut it. You also have the option of the Lowa 15mm F2 which is a sharp lens, but you have the hassle of it being manual focus and it doesn't communicate with your Z cameras. My biggest gripe with the Loawa is that I couldn't do my auto ramp Day To Night or Night To Day time lapses since the app couldn't control the aperture on the Loawa lens. So it boils down to how many cameras are you using and what is your goal with those lenses.

@@Milkywaymike thanks, I have just one body, I do lot of long trails, landscape but ocasionally nightscapes. I don’t do time lapses. Having the minimum gear is essential for me. 14-24 allows me to carry just one when hiking, but with the combo I can decide whether I do just day hike (go with 14-30) or night (14-30+20). Still undecided😅

the 14-30f4 is way sharper than the 14-24f2.8s.. even when comparing 14-24f2.8s stopped down by 1 stop vs 14-3-f4 wide open.. The only problem I've got with both is the high vignette and distortion esp. for those of us who don't use LR..

what makes it the best.. I think that's subjective.. the best to you.. my best could be the 18-55 dx f3.5-4.5 on a d70s. Lens is lens.. nothing is best if you know what you are doin'.. real photographers don't run after gear but skills ( a lot of post processing exposure blending, stacking will give you better results than using that expensive lens with no skills ).

You seem to have the old lens at ISO 3200 and the new one at ISO 4000, but both exposed 8 secs. Why is that ?
@Milkywaymike
@Milkywaymike 3 жыл бұрын
When I started the test I thought it was “true night” but I was a few minutes early so it was still astronomical twilight and the exposure was good at 3200. As it got a little darker I had to increase the iso to 4000. It doesn’t affect the sharpness test and if it did it would be in favor of the old 14-24 2.8, but as the tests show even a stop cleaner doesn’t make it sharper than the other 2 lenses.

@@Milkywaymike thanks. It was impressive to see the new lens is better even with a stop handicap. I was wondering if there’s something in the spec I missed that required giving that handicap. I did notice that after the first comparison everything else was at 4k iso. I too will be selling my old 14-24 f/2.8. To be frank due to pressures of the job, I hardly ever used it after the initial trip to Iceland I purchased it for. when I have more time, I’ll get one of the newer ones to go with my Z camera. Thanks for a comprehensive and balanced ans scientific review. Really helped clarify the options.

Nice review thank you. Its a bit surprising that the 14-24S is no sharper than the 14-30. All you get for the extra money is a stop of light. I any event, if I had both of these I think I would use the 14-30 more as a travel and hiking lens, and pull the 14-24 out for astro and specialist purposes. BTW What are these things you call pounds? The new 14-24S is one third of a Noct.

In terms of practicality, usability, weight and size, the 14-30 can't be beat and Nikon had a challenge with the 2.8 S. In terms of pure optical quality, the 2.8 S wins. Everything else... F4 wins.
