After receiving many questions regarding super zoom lenses, I decided to review the Nikon 18-300 thanks to Robert's Camera!:) I shot with the Nikon 18-200 for many years and also shot with various other manufacture zooms (Canon 18-200, Tamron 18-200, Sony 18-200, etc.).
Super zoom lenses are extremely convenient but come with a few trade-offs at the wide angle (most notably vignetting and warping which can be addressed in post processing if needed). I like various super zooms and feel they produce solid/great results.

Thanks for another great tutorial video, look forward to seeing your thoughts on camera shooting as well as light room and post production . I bought this lens in addition to the non vr version that came in my kit package, primarily for video or long distance stabilization, has fared well. Went outdoors with my two shelties to a local state park and got some teriffic shots of a red-tailed Hawk against the blue sky and both warping and vignetting were non events, the photos turned out great Imo. Have a great day, and thanks again for your time and insights!

Exactly what I wanted to see, i.e. a multi-task lens in a camera like mine. Now I have bought it at half price in perfect condition to replace my 18-55, 55-200, 55-300. I would like to add that many of my friends have full-frame Nikons and are admired by the quality of such amateur equipment as the D3400 and dedicated lenses. After a series of photos taken with the 18-300 lens in manual mode, manual changing ISO frequently and other parameters, in a newer version, simplified and cheaper than its predecessor, I must admit that it perfectly replaced my current three lenses. Fast autofocus at various settings, good or even better quality photos / sharpness in low light. The manual ring close and in the perfect place does not interfere with the rest of the lens for hand positioning or other things. The zoom adjustment is not exactly perfectly smooth, but you can feel it. I found a review of this lens where someone was putting it on an FX camera ... My hands dropped. Or they compared it to lenses with a completely different purpose or wider ranges of work ... Once again, hands dropped at the sight of these pseudo-professionals. In my Nikon D3400 this lens does a very decent job and I don't think I would ever replace Nikon lenses with low quality Chinese from Tamron or Sigma.

Nice lens, for a lens that reaches out to 300mm it sure is compact. I have a Sigma 28-200 that I love, it eliminates the need for some smaller zooms, much like this one you reviewed, but it is a little larger. The detail on this lens was really good with those close up shots. That extra hundred millimeter reach is a nice plus, this is a lens that I could easily make room for in my bag. Thanks for showing this lens to us.

One more great review! Your videos are so inspiring! After having photography as my main hobby for the past 2 years, I 've come to the conclusion that missing a shot is less forgivable than not having the best lens in terms of sharpness/distortion etc. I regretted buying (used of course!) the Tamron 70-200 as secondary lens for telephoto shooting. Too heavy! I rarely carried it in my bag because of the weight and also was a bit discouraged to move around strangers with this big gun. I sold it recently and I'm pretty convinced the 18-300 will be my next best lens-buddy (along with the 16-80 I'm already using as main lens on my d7500). I also keep a 50mm 1.8G for low-light. Thanks for your review and effort! Stay safe my friend!!! Ps. Forgot to mention that your field testing results agree with Ken Rockwell's review about the good bokeh of this lens. It's amazing how many pros this lens has, and distortion/vignette is a zero problem to me as I do raw editing 99% of the time!
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 2 жыл бұрын
thanks for the post/feedback:). the 70-200 seems to be a good/solid staple for specific photo shoots, however i lean towards the 18-200, 18-300, or 18-400 (tamron) for my everyday lens and also carry the fixed 50 in my bag (a great combo in my opinion).

@@RealWorld In the meantime, I got a good and barely used copy of the tamron 16-300 and I'm very happy with it. Less expensive than the nikkor 18-300 and you have a wider end which really makes a difference. I agree with you, being practical and flexible gives you more creative opportunities! Priceless!

I had been considering purchasing this lens. Right now I have a 55mm-200mm which is ok but would be much more diverse with the 18-300. Biggest issue is the price point. Little doubt that it is a reasonably priced lens but much more that the lower end lenses. I also have the 35 and 50 primes which I love!! The lens I am really enjoying right now and just got this week was the 40mm macro. I never had so much fun shooting such a variety of tack sharp images. I am sure you have reviewed it already, but if not you got to spend a day with that one!!! Enjoy your videos and all you do. I can see where the 18-300 could be a real workhorse!!! Moonpie

Thanks for the post:). Ahhhh yes, the 55-200 is a staple in the Nikon kits as well. I JUST finished a review on the Tamron 18-400 and should have the video uploaded in the next 12 hours or so ... this is another worthy consideration in my opinion:). I used the fixed 40 on a macro video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iuCUjJaS39HeiZc.html ... really like the 40 as well:).

What a timely video for me! Because I like to test 70-300mm lens this weekend. One question, when you took a photo of a leaf holding on your hand, the exposure setting was 1/125 at 300mm. Obviously, the shutter speed is slower compared to the focal length of 300mm. Did you use VR on? Many thanks!
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) Yes, I leveraged VR on all shots which I found helpful at slower shutter speeds. I took one shot at 1/30 of second although not certain it made the demo in the video:). Nonetheless, I was surprised how well VR worked when needing to shoot at slower speeds.

Do you have any videos using filters? Do’s and dont’s or good times to use them? I also love your D3400 videos! I have learned so much from you.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help Katie!:) I typically do not use filters with exception to an ND filter which can be nice to slow the shutter to capture flowing water in the daytime ( I used an ND filter in this video (look for the water shots;) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdh8layZ1KjJf6M.html ). Many filter effects can be applied in post processing using Lightroom, etc., however this is one major benefit to consider - protecting the glass. If you want to protect the front/outer glass of your lens, I might suggest a polarizer of some sort ( this is a very basic filter from Amazon that would do the trick - amzn.to/2X3mF1j (check/confirm the size needed)). I typically use a lens hood to shade sunlight and protect my glass though:).

Nice examples. You have the professional eye! I just got the D7500/ 18-200 but I'm thinking the 18-300 gives me a bit more reach for about the same size and weight. Should I upgrade, or will I lose quality? Or should I get the 18-300 Sigma, or the 18-400 Tamron? I intend to shoot videos and landscapes, and general photos like butterflies and birds. I'm a professional videographer, but a good amateur photographer. TY!

Thanks for another great video., I've been wondering about this lens for a while. Trying to break down and find something with a better zoom for getting the shots that I want. Your review is letting me start to think it might be the right choice for my camera needs. The only question is "Would it replace my default 18 - 55mm?"
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) In my opinion, yes - the 18-300 would replace the 18-55. The only consideration would be size. The 18-300 is bigger than the 18-55 but if you can deal with the size difference, you should be good:). I ran with the 18-200 for many years - it was my one size fits all lens:). At some point I picked up the fixed 50 ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5iEjbmmnN--mZs.html ) which is great for portraits. I kept the 18-200 on the body and carried the fixed 50 in my bag ... this was a good one-two punch combo for me:).

@@RealWorld Awesome thanks. I am also putting some thought into the fixed 50. There is honestly so much I'd like to do. I also want to get a fisheye lens. But, I am bit away from that. I just got a good grip on the lens that I have. I am really enjoying photography and can't wait for the new experiences with my next lens. Just rewatched this one. As usual, it inspires me to go shoot random things and find beauty in the details. I have a question, though: what do you use to "colorpop" your images. I know Photoshop can isolate a certain color, but you have some that isolate an object with all its colors and leave the rest monotone.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and glad to inspire Anthony!:) I use Lightroom to post process images and a couple of techniques combined to isolate color ... 1) overall color isolation. This allows me to isolation specific colors if needed 2) the brush tool to desaturate surrounding colors as needed.

@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) You are correct - I have found many lenses have a sweet spot and feel the 70-300 is just shy of 300 as well:). I can related with your situation and my suggest a teleconverter of some sort. Teleconverters come is different sized typically ranging from 1.4 to 2 (meaning it will convert or multiply your zoom by the given range/number (so if you had a 2x teleconverter on a 300mm, you will effectively reach to 600mm)). The trade off will be slightly softer images along with a stop or two of loss. One suggestion might be the Sigma 2x ( amzn.to/2BxrEhu ). Another thought is a full-on manual one size lens ( amzn.to/2GpjThw ). A friend of mine has something similar and uses it for one purpose - the moon:). This might be a good idea for a review vid:).

replied to your post on another video but will copy here for others to benefit as well ... i suspect you have the lens by now and put it through the paces - i really like this lens :). i typically shoot with manual ISO and quickly adjust as needed to gain a proper exposure. i control the aperture to maintain exposure at the lower ISO and adjust the ISO secondarily. if you shoot is auto ISO (which I have done before as well), set the max to something you are good with - for example, 1600 (although i have shot with much higher as well) :).

Hello, this seems like an good lens, if you can deal with warping issues on small zoom sizes. However I am still undecided between this and the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED. It seem this AF-S DX NIKKOR has better aperture, minimum focus distance and quieter. Which one do you feel has better telephoto zoom quality in final shots, esp in middle and 300mm? I am a high entry level user using 5600. Esp as £200 of difference.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/question:). I feel both will ultimately produce similar images and suspect the main difference is within the AF-P. Nikon's P version is their silent focus motor which is great for video. If you do not need the silent motor and want to save some money, I might lean towards the S version:).

the addition 100mm would certainly help. in addition, i might consider the tamron 18-400 ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecx0mdhp2LGRn2Q.html ). one more quick consideration is shutter speed and ISO - when you are leveraging the 200-400 range, less light enters making for slower shutter speeds. in order to combat this, keep raise the ISO to increase the shutter speed:).

Hi I need an help. I own a D7200 with a 16-80, 70-300 IF ED VR, a 35 DX and a 50 AF-D. When i bought the camera it was in kit with the 18-140mm which i used in very fews occasions. With my set of lenses, that 18-140 is "useless", so i were thinking to replace it with the neewer version of 18-300 (the f/3.5-6.3). It could give me the chance to have a single all around lens in daylight situation where a i can't/won't carry all the equipment (eg. on beach with child). Based on your experiences, immage quality is so far from 18-140mm? I'm not a pixelpeeper but i use to see immages from my better lenses and so i fear 18-300 is too much far from them. Coud you give me a suggestion? TNX. Regards from Italy. Giuseppe.-

Thanks for the post!:) You have a good range of lenses and I can relate with your situation as I have been there and done that as well:). I would suggest moving forward with the 18-300 and carrying the fixed 50 if you have room (or 35 as both are solid). If not, leave the 50 and run with the 18-300. For many years, I used the Nikon 18-200 VR lens as my all around lens. The lens stayed on my camera 99% of the time and works well. I used the same lens on a crop sensor body for all shots take at the Indy 500 100th anniversary ( I created a quick video which might be of help - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oMdmhcZ1qsCwaYk.html ).

At 18mm there was barrel warping, did you happen to shoot the brick wall at 24mm? Did you figure out where the barrel warping stopped?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
On extreme zoom lenses barrel distortion is normal/expected at the wide ranges. This is why many photographers might carry a smaller zoom range at the extremes or perhaps a fixed lens of some sort. I do not mind the distortion as most can be fixed in post processing. Nonetheless, the distortion starts to fade significantly in the upper 20 range. Keep in mind the distortion is only more noticeable with a straight lines in the subject.:)

There are two versions of Nikon’s 18-300. The older, heavier and more expensive 3.5-5.6 and the newer, lighter 3.5-6.3. I had the 3.5-6.3 and because of its range was my go-to lens for traveling with my D7100 DX body when I shot Nikon and didn’t want to take a bag of lenses with me. It’s compact and exactly the same size as the 18-140 that offers similar optical quality but significantly less reach. I never noticed the distortion that gets easily corrected in Lightroom. It does lack the speed of faster lenses so it’s strictly an outdoor lens in good light. On the long end it falls short optically compared to Nikon’s 70-300 FX lens and far short of a Tamron 70-200 2.8. But for a single lens on vacation travel it’s a good choice.
