When the Nikon 24 f1.4 was first announced I was faced with that age old question, am I going to buy this lens when it comes out? I got really excited at the notion that a new lens would soon grace my D3S allowing me to capture things I never could have imagined.
Than I started to try and figure out where am I going to find $2,200 US to get this lens. What lenses will I need to sell in order to free up some space? If I already own two lenses that cover that 24mm range do I really need this 24 f1.4? This is what happens in my mind as soon as something new comes out, I go from I have to have it, to do I really need it, is it really going to be that good? Well I have not purchased it up to this point (as of 9/10) but I did get to play with one for a few days and run it through my brand of testing

@Dombowerphoto That happend because I was maxed out at 1/8000 of a second at 1.4 at 200 ISO and pretty much had to wiggle room left to shoot that image but took it any way even though the camera said HI.

@geosimsimma They may not be bad at f8 but I personally do not shoot at F8 i tend to shoot wide open or below f4 .

If you're into astrophotography, particularly milky way photos, this lens is a dream. It captures so much light, across a wide angle to get in all that night sky. Combine this with a full frame sensor on a relatively high ISO, focus on infinity, out in the desert, and you are able to get enough light with shutter speeds fast enough to avoid star trails.

If I had the extra cash, I'd buy it today. I have used it before and I have to say that this is a ridiculously beautiful lens. It's worth the full price and if you can get it used for a song, buy it. My main lens on my D200 for the past 7 years is a 20mm 2.8D. On my film cameras I've used a few 35F2 manual and D.

I shoot weddings. Im waiting for this lens to come in the mail any minute. I have the spectacular 85 1.4g and 50 1.4g and wanted this for that extra artistic kick at wide open. But i have a problem. I don't have any pro telephotos, and i just can't seem to even justify taking my 70-300 f/shit lens out of that bag! I'm in series debate to send my 24 back and get the 70-200 2.8 vr2 since they are practically the same price. i know you said to get the trinity and save this lens for later on but I'm still not sure. your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

@JaredPolin lol, I think we speak in reverse. I also tend to shoot wide open or very close (maximum aperture?). That's why I suggested comparing lenses at a more open aperture than f8. In your comparison with the 14-24 and 24-70, I would have like to see the comparison at f2.8. But anyway those three lenses are fantastic and there is probably not much of a difference. Just got the 24 f1.4 and preliminary testing tell me I will love it. Keep the video coming!

Mine has functioned flawlessly for 2 years now. What were the issues with your lens? People often nit pick lenses and images they get from them but you have to learn to maximize the lens ability in order to get consistent results.

hey Jared, thanks for your time making all those videos. Specially enjoy the ones with Lil. May I suggest in the future that you compare lenses at the maximum common aperture. Even the worst lens won't be so bad at f8.

best 50mm on the market for Nikon by far. Contrast is incredible and is extremely sharp and the bokeh is much much more beautiful with it too.

One thing is also very importent.A 24mm f 1.4 has 4 times more depth of field than a 50mm f 1.4.Its ideal for shooting at night outdoors becouse at 1.4 you still have a lot of depth of field.

I really liked this review. I think the comparison of photos shot at different lenses really helps a lot. I also learned that 1.4 lenses are great for night photography which is something I'm really interested in, but the depth of field doesn't seem to help very much especially when shooting night shots in a big city location. Do you think you'll have a night photography lesson in store for the future? :)

Hi Jared, You have been helping me lots and lots with the beginning of shooting with a DSLR. Im the proud owner of a D3100 with the 18-55VR kitlens and the Tamron 70-300. Im loving the pictures im shooting but im wondering if you can suggest me a thing or two. First I want to ask what lens is a good one to shoot from a close distance. Like a beetle on a leaf. It doesnt have to be the cheapest one but not a $400 dollar one. Thanks in Advance! Thanks Lorenzo!

@JaredPolin personally i think this lens is useless ,its not a wide lens and for street shooting the nikon 35mm f/1.4 or even the cheaper 50mm f/1.4 are better

Hello Jared I watch all your videos. I would really like you to make a video about the Nikon 135 and 105 f2 DC lenses. Owners swear by their quality yet these old school lenses have no ED or nano elements, no AF-S motor and none of the other gold ring type ding dongs. I really want to know your views about these two. Canon 135 f2L on the other hand is a real winner even without the DC controls. Thanks!

like the video well said .. its will be good for night life photograph including night club getting natural shots and awesome bokeh small comapact light and easy to carry around when you have a have nikon body carry all day .. i still love the 14-70 and 24-70 but 50 mm can be hard to use in a night club though 24 f 1.4 and 14-24 and 24 -70 is perfect i would say

Do you still have the 14-24 vs 24 vs 24-70 samples so I can see them? Question - I have the Nikon 14-24, then I have these primes; 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, & the 70-200mm. I just got the Nikon 24-70, but wondering if I should send it back & get the 24 prime (since I already have 35, 50 & 85 primes, maybe the 24 prime would serve me better than the 24-70)? Wish I could keep both, as I think I would like the ease of the 24-70 as an all-purpose, walk-around lens?

Comparing a 24mm 1.4 with a 70-200mm 2.8 saying it’s only $100 more is a stupid as a comparison can get.

lens looks good, but not for that price. You can use software (photoshop/Lightroom) to help give your photos great depth of field, and can have more control of it.
