I had both as well and there is something about the 35mm 1.4g which makes it just much better. I think it is the out of focus transition, also with very busy backgrounds the 1.4g has a lot smoother blur.

The 35mm 1.4G is a magical lens. Very happy with it. Might not be as sharp as the Z but the character i love.

I won't say one is "better" then the other, id say they both are excellent and they provide different results.... the G lens even at 1.8 blurs the background just a bit more.

The Z version looks more color neutral while the G version gives you a more yellowish skin tone . I have the Z and it’s my favorite lens so far . I bought it refurbished for $650.

Nice. The 35Z is pretty much all you need shooting Z mirrorless at a 35mm focal length. 70% of the time huh? you must love that focal length. its good candids at weddings roaming around capturing the day's events too. good for semi wide portraits.

Thanks man! I got the 35mm 1.8 and now im mulling over getting the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 to use with my FTZ adapter to round out my collection. I managed to get the FTZ adapter for only $99 from best buy by buying it with the z6ii body vs the usual $250 price. B&H photo have the same deal too.

Bonzo was the best....Neil p was a close second. Ok moving on from rock n roll ....I’m gonna say the rendering on g lens is out of this world. Wow those shots look beautiful. The z lens looks fine. Clean, sharp, and a bit clinical but that’s probably what I’m gonna pick up based on price. Even used that’s a bit steep for the G...I purchased the 50mm f1.8s lens and wow it’s amazing for a 1.8....also picked up the voightlander 58mm f1.4 for low light and classic rendering. Gorgeous bokeh and sharp enough. Love your channel keep pumping out the rock n roll ! Great comparison review. That was EXTREMELY helpful. Great job 👏

Just ordered the 35mm 1.8s together with a z6ii I've ordered to replace my recently damaged d780. Im coming from a 35mm f2 D and I love that lens, not sure if I will like the sharpness and rendering of the 35mm 1.8s but decided to go with the times and I also like the form factor of the Nikon Z mirrorless. Awesome channel mate, love your fun and laid back but clearly knowledgeable style

The G is a bit warmer, and of course at 1.4 its really nice bokeh, I did notice that the Z was a bit sharper overall, and also at 1.8 had a softer rounder Bokeh than the G, which in highlights, like the bulb from your lamp at home, you could actually see the 8 blade aperature of the G, whereas the S appeared round, whether more blades or just opticals, who knows. Both are great lenses. I do like the tone of the G in this scenario, but the Z probably is more accurate tonally and I can adjust tone in lightroom anyway so I'd rather start more neutral. If I had a Z camera and could only have 1 at this focal length and didn't already have the G, I would buy the Z for a better value, better overall sharpness, and actually a softer bokeh at f stops smaller than the 1.4 which of course, it can't compete with. You can't go wrong either way. I mean, if you have the 1.4 you might as well just use that, because the advantages of the wide open lens can't be beat and at other aperatures it's good enough. Honestly when they come out with a 1.4 Z, it will likely put the G to bed, but will likely cost a small fortune.. Databyter

I think the Z 35 f1.8 did very well in the video tests, showing very comparable optical quality other than not being as fast. Video focus seemed a bit slower to capture with the Z lens, which at this point it is conclusive that only user error can cause that. It was impossible to make an assessment on the stills. Both produced great portraits from what I could see, but there really wasn't a side by side to compare effectively. I have the Z 20, 35, 50, and 85 f1.8S lenses. In order from best to worst, its 50, 20, 85, 35. The 50 and 20 are exceptional, while the 85 and 35 are great. That is in comparison to all modern FF lenses of similar focal length on the market from any manufacturer for any mount and any maximum aperture, and I have owned/used the majority of them. The Z 50 f1.8 is a titan, besting or matching lenses cost 2-8 times as much and some having faster apertures and supposedly better build quality. Weather sealing is a build quality, and, frankly, most weather sealing on other lenses is gimmick as best. Not with Z. The Z 20 f1.8 is the destroyer of all ultra wide to wide prime and zooms lenses, and that includes in astro vs astro lenses that are made almost exclusively for astro use. The Z 85 and 35 are great, but Nikon didn't get it all right on those and they do have some minor, yet noticeable shortfalls. They certainly beat or match everything like them on the market, but do not punch above their weight class like the 50 and 20.

A few questions for you, The 20mm , how does it compare to the Zoom lens, 14-30mm at 20mm as far as optical performance. sharpness, colors.? other than being a 1.8? have you owned or shot with the 14-30? Excellent video! The comparison length-wise at the end was helpful too. If you ever get a chance, I’d love to see a similar comparison between the 24mm f1.4G, which I saw you already reviewed, and the Z-mount 24mm f1.8. I’m trying to decide between the two, and I’ll also throw out a third option: the Sony GM 24mm f1.4, adapted onto my Z6 using the Techart TZE-01.
@Vahagraphy
@Vahagraphy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Eric. Glad this video helped. The 24mm G is an excellent lens. The Z 24mm is amazing aswell. Giving that both lenses are around the same price when you factor in buying the 24mm z new at around 1K and buying the G used at around 1k. If your doing stills mostly the 1.4 comes in handy and is a big advantage over the 1.8 S however the Z will be allot sharper as to be expected with Z lenses. The sony 24 I have no prior time with so I can't comment on that one only to tell you its a bit more new than the Z. The advantage you have with the Z lens is that its native and sharp which its probably rhe front runner at this point in your decision. But that 24mm G 1.4 is a gem. Love the look and colors of the G. I will make note for a future comparison video.
@ericbradner6986

@@Vahagraphy Thanks for the thoughts! I love 24mm for environmental portraits, so being able to get to f1.4 is a big consideration for me. I was afraid the G lens would just be way too front-heavy on the FTZ, but I know it’s a somewhat similar size to the 35mm f1.4G and it looked like you handled it without a problem in this video!
@Vahagraphy
@Vahagraphy 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericbradner6986 from my observation, the 24mm is just a little bit top heavy but nothing to worry about. They are both about the same as far as overall weight. My honest opinion, If you can find a good condition 24 1.4 g at a great price given that F mount lenses have come down in price on the used market because of Z mirrorless. then I would get it, I personally would not invest in one at new prices. that said, love the look and character and colors of the G lenses.

I had the Sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens for my d800, and when I bought my z6 2 years ago it came with the ftz adapter. I used nothing but adapted lenses for the first 6 months until I bought the 50mm f1.8s lens. And I was blown away on how sharp and fast the native lens was compared to the dslr lenses. So I decided to buy the Nikon 35mm f1.8s and yes it’s an amazingly fast and sharp lens. But the Sigma 35mm f1.4 is just as good and in my opinion sharper than the new Nikon. So I sent back the new Nikon 35mm and have been using the sigma 35mm with great success. Now if I would get into doing videos I would have definitely kept it. But after 2 years I only bought the new 85mm f1.8s lens and the rest of my lenses are all dslr lenses. It’s the best part about mirrorless cameras is you can adapt just about any lens to the cameras. Nikon is slowly coming out with some faster lenses. But I see nothing in their roadmap for a 105mm f1.4. And my favorite lens on my z5 and z6 is the Sigma 105mm f1.4 art lens. Sharpest lens in my whole lens lineup. You couldn’t pay me to part with it. So I tell newer photographers, get what fits your budget and use it. Don’t worry about the newest and greatest. Good stuff well presented. I also own the Nikkor 35 1.4G and it spends a good amount of time on my D850 as it’s incredibly versatile with superlative results. CA an issue in high contrast wide open aperture situations, easily fixed post processing but it’s the only downside I find. Did you notice a reduction in CA’s between the two at F1.8? Just curious... Thanks for sharing! Ciao.

THanks Steve glad you enjoyed the video. honestly haven't really had a problem with CA shooting wide open to much. Maybe because I tend to do allot of portraits and people with the lens with allot of bokeh vs buildings , trees or landscapes. but now that you mentioned CA I will have to pay more close attention to that. But from my observation so far it does a good job with CA.

image on the 35 f1.4 looks more true and liveness, Z35 is flat and dull

@@Vahagraphy appreciate if you can do more comparison between the F MOUNT nikkor and Nikon Z lens :) I am still deciding investing into Z lens lens or adapt lens. I am also choosing Z5 or the Z6ii :)

@@Vahagraphy i shot manual F mount lens Zeiss, haha. So Z5 to be is a big bargain, but i just like the top LCD display, better LCD, BSI sensor and other small improvements like the 900s lojg exposure. AF and video is not essential for me :)

Bingo. Modern image. sometimes you want that older look to a picture.

@@Vahagraphy You can seldom want an old image. It is easier to produce an old image from a modern lens, however you cannot make an image from an old lens modern. That's why in the Vs for me the Nikon S wins

@@bodacinema But some of those vintage lenses that produce natural vinniette and a color out of the camera, the 105mm 2.5 comes to mind, very sharp yet older character.
