I have had the Nikon 500mm 5.6 PF for a few years and it is a fantastic lens. Here I give a quick summary of the lens and share some photos I took with the lens.

Great set of images. Always a joy to watch. A friend of mine has the 300PF and loves it. He won’t buy the 500 because, according to him, it isn’t so good in low light. Personally, if it was me, I just wouldn’t use it in low light. Other Nikon friends always say how good it is. I wish my lens had a radio.

Thanks as always Eljay for the kind comments. I feel the same as you. If it's really bad light...I won't usually take photos. What it can do in good light makes up for it and the fact you can listen to music and relieve stress at the same time means it's a no brainer😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Ahh thanks I also have those bubble wrap buttons on my old Canon lenses now I know what they are can keep me occupied while I wait for action... Hehe fantastic shots at the end. That is one fantastic birding combo still great today.

Great shots. And funny thing - before I bought my OM1/150-400 4.5 combo, my main bird and wildlife rig was my D850/500mm pf, which, just like you, I still own. And, coincidentally, I just posted some of my 500 pf photos on one of my FB Nikon groups, after seeing pages and pages of postings with the new telephoto Z lenses. It’s just a great lens period. I’ve been meaning to take both rigs out hunting owls - snowies and GGOs mostly here in Alberta - to see how they perform head to head. Other than the lightning speed of the OM1, I think it will be an interesting comparison - the 45MP croppable images using the 500 against the 20MP ones from the 150-400. Should be fun. PS to work the music button you have to use the CD slot on the camera. I’m partial to Fleetwood Mac when out in the bush.

Great review like the button explanation 😂, I have this set up also and have just got an om1 and looking at the 300 f4 to go with it . What are your thoughts on image quality low light etc with the two systems?

Thank you for the nice comment🙏I would think in low light the OM-1 would be better because the IS is so good you don't need as high a shutter speed and therefore an ISO.

Hi Richard, Great shots as usual regardless of the equipment used. I have a question to you. Since you already had an excellent combo for wildlife photography (Nikon D500 and Nikon 500mm 5.6 PF lens), what made you go to the smaller sensor like MFT format? It kind of defies the logic.

Hi Les. Thanks for the nice comment as always. I basically bought the EM1 MK2 as a back up system but was totally surprised by the image quality and the size, features. As a result I started using my Nikon stuff less. Simple as that. Despite the smaller sensor your arent comprising on image quality

@@RichardCookphotography Hi Richard, Thank you for your reply. There is tendency to switch to bigger sensor camera, because the quality of the images is better. It is nice to hear from you that by switching to a smaller sensor, image quality doesn't have to be compromised.

Great video, I too shoot Nikon and OM1, how would you compare the image quality between the two?

Thanks Steve. Obviously alot depends on the lens you are using. However I can honestly say the image quality is excellent on both set ups. I haven't used a top quality lens for long enough yet on the OM-1 to totally qualify that opinion but my suspicion is the Oly 300mm F4 would be in the same ballpark as the 500mm.

First of all Richard, genuinely amazing images and thanks for this video!! I'm a Fuji X-T4 user and I'm really considering this lens as a surf/wildlife partner to my Fuji 70-300 because "Fringer" make great adapters for Nikon and Canon glass to adapt to Fujifilm cameras. Fuji are meant to be releasing telephoto primes next year, so I'll wait and see what they offer. If they either don't release them or they're out of my budget, I'll definitely go for a used Nikon 500PF 5.6 on MPB.
